I thought the hatching from an egg was a joke and then I looked it up and nope, echidnas are monotremes aka mammals that lay eggs.

It was a little bit of a joke. I was originally going to put a note in that first panel that "echidna eggs aren't actually hard like this," but I felt it was unnecessary. I was going for a kind of silly, STC-like vibe with the idea :)

Real echidnas are actually shy gentle creatures. They don’t behave like Knuckles does. Although male echidnas do occasionally fight with each other over females during the mating season.

It’s surprising that SEGA gave Knuckles teeth. Because real echidnas have no teeth at all. But echidnas probably did have teeth back during the Eocene era. 50 million years before today.
