Recently Justhavingfun asked me to edit my (long forgotten) knurling on the unimat SL lathe. This is the first time I tried knurling on the lathe and I was surprised to see how well it went.
I do recommend you check Justhavingfun channel on guns: www.youtube.co...
Enjoy and thanks for watching

good video, thank you, but... this knurling tool is c**p When viewed from above, two arms of the tool swing/wobble from side to side... poor fit (as usual) from cheap imports - you get what you pay for

Good point mate. Yes, the rivets (it's not screws) are free and need a washer to stifen the lateral movement of the tool. We all get what I pay for... But do bear in mind that this is a hobby shop - I can't afford expensive tools as I make zero cash off of it, nor from the ads YT adds to my videos. So I buy China/India made tools that I can afford, clean and improve them and use what I have. I will add washers to the tool. I think it needs a degree of freedom - to a small extent though. We shall see. That was my first ever use of it, and since I've knurled a large piece of brass. Bottom line - It works... :)

For the times I have done this, I have put a rod (or just an old drill with a stump end) to support the part to stay inside the chuck. It does take more goes and time than on my bigger lathe but for small parts it is really well able to do. By the way, I also still have to change my gearing-wheels to not have it stall on my SL. Thanks for the video

Slower is better - and I fully agree with the tailstock live center support on these :) I can't change my speed (until I get the new motor installed) so I just went slow, quarter turn tightening the nut on the wheels every pass. It works quite well.

Great video as always! I have always wanted a knurling tool. Do you have a link for the one in this video? Thanks!

Mike, I made and knurled some small thumbscrews for a pals leather machine, and used one of the generic small mini lathe knurling tools bought on internet. It worked surprising well on the unimat sl, using 1/4 inch brass bar for the grips. I've yet to fit my auto feed or try my thread cutting attachments, but collets have proved a useful addition for quite fine work. I've not bought table saw or other non-metal working attachments, due to cost versus likely benefits for me. Unimat SL incredibly versatile as you often demonstrate, however.
