Whilst we know that a koala's diet is made up almost entirely of eucalyptus leaves, they do occasionally eat non-eucalyptus species including melaleuca - here is a koala doing just that! We have melaleuca forests in the Northern Rivers and koalas live there - so even if there are no eucalypts, it can still form part of koala habitat. Koalas not only eat melaleuca trees but use them to access larger gum trees and use them to navigate their aerial highway and reduce the need to come to ground - thus reducing the chances of being hit by a car or attacked by dogs. Habitat restoration is more than just eucalyptus trees, it is about having a healthy ecosystem. #koalahabitat #ecosystems #koalaconservation
