Koala Sampler Finger Drumming?
Koala Sampler is already a very powerful piece of software, at an incredibly affordable price. However, finger drumming with a touch screen is never a good experience. So today I wanted to see if the Launchpad Mini mk3 would work well as a pad controller for Koala Sampler, just using a usb type c cable. Much to my surprise, it worked without an issue. On top of that, MIDI mapping was very easy, and I didn't even notice any latency. I'll definitely be exploring this setup more in the future, and I highly recommend giving this combo a shot if you're able to. Enjoy the video :)

When you're sampling, the headphone icon (to the left of the mic input level) allows you to monitor the source so you're not recording blind. I'm interested to see your next steps with Koala sampler.

Koala Sampler actually can do what any sampler in the market can do and even more on ios because on ios you can used koala as an auv3 which is the ios term for plugins, which means that you can actually use and integrated mostly any other app with each other specially on any ios auv3 host daw on ios, like for example AUM which is not a daw but its mixer app that is perfect for koala because whatever koala is missing AUM enables you to add any auv3 fx and processes like eq, compression, reverb, delay well anything that you think of, even auv3 instruments which you can play along with koala or even sample the auv3 instruments,, basically on ios you have the ability to turn your iphone for example into a complete professional audio midi work station capable of doing anything you can think of !!! by the way cool video

Thanks for this vid! Ironically, I just picked up a Launchpad Mini for cheap and was wondering what I could use it with outside Ableton. I love Koala sampler and you just confirmed that I can pair these two together. It also helps that I have a Google Pixel 5a phone, which DOES have a headphone jack, standard. Like you said - game changer! I'm gonna have fun with this.

I love using koala sampler with various minimalistic / portable setups,working little (never finishing) projects or just having fun. I'm currently making some YT shorts demonstrating some possible combinations.

Mini mk2 here, its intermittent after a couple pad presses. And the pad doesnt play when HOLD AND LOOP are already selected on a pad

Thanks! I use Koala in our band for clips (the intro chords on Dua Lipa Levitating) and never had the notes mapped the way I want them. Fixed!

I use Android and I have used FL mobile, Roland zen beats, and others... Mixtrak surprised me because it has a very pro level. 🤯 But the next question after yes, "Koala Sampler Fingerdruming?" It should be something like, "I get on stage with just my phone and my Vestax Pad One, will I be able to blow up the crowd?" 🥳Or can this app be taken to a party room level? 🕺👯💃Because of all the ones I've used before, Koala is the one that works best with long samples.🍄 I'm waiting for a video with the headline: Speaker + Controller + Telephone = All the people in the park jumping and screaming at the same time (4🍑 hours party)

Thanks ! I was contemplating selling my launchpad mk3 mini after getting the pro mk3, but also got a new phone last week, and looking for nice music apps due to the bigger CPU power, USB C port and 5000 mah battery. I got interested in Koala Sampler and was looking for a pad controller option, and now found your video ! Thanks :) looking forward to jamming with it.

@Free Beat, could you tell us the audio interface, and the usb cable you used? I want to buy the very devices you used that actually work. I want to use a midi keyboard but I know not all usb cables are compatible cause the Casio CT-S1000V requires a specific usb cable to work with android phones to transfer lyrics from the lyric app so yeah.. Please? cable and audio interface info?

My audio interface is the Zoom Livetrak L-12 (linked in the description) but that should have absolutely no bearing on your success with a MIDI keyboard. Looking at the keyboard you linked, it looks like it uses micro usb type b for MIDI, which means you'd need a micro usb type b to usb type c cable. Something like this amzn.to/3g6lTyW should work, but there's always a chance it won't.

@@FreeBeat Thanks for the quick response! Actually I meant the usb-c to audio input/output device you used to sample the PO with? As for the cable, I used the Casio as an example of why I need to know the exact cable used here but actually I own various keyboards with different usb port types. I figure I can always use a type c to whatever adapter at the keyboard itself, but the usb c to usb c cable you have there supports midi AND POWER. That is the key..pun intended..here. Currently I want to try with the Akai mini keyboard and Korg nanokeys, etc. SUch same cable may be able to work with my Roland E4 I bought recently as well to use the phone app to trigger the vocoder via usb midi..

@@pianokeyjoe Ahh, so the power issue actually has to do with the controller itself, not the cable. The Launchpad Mini MK3 in this video, as well as some lightweight controllers like the basic Arturia Keystep have such little power requirements that they can be powered over USB and still use USB MIDI. Don't the four quadrants of the launchpad map to bank a/b/c/d in Koala by default? Then I'd probably keep the default mapping and move samples around in Koala instead - that way, you've got a visual representation what's where (it's probably hard to keep more than 16 mappings in your head…)

It probably does map automatically - I know my OffGrid did and it’s a Shit controller (with classic midi drum mapping) - it’s probably just not obvious at first unless you hit “the right bank”‘s pads on the launchpad

Unfortunately newer phones do not have the headphone jack anymore. I am missing an usb c hub with audio in/out in one small(!) box for this kind of minimal setup…

Actually, the Google Pixel 5a which came out this year, has the 3.5mm output jack built in (which I love). Powerful phone and runs Koala very well. BTW, if you search Amazon for USB C to headphone adapter, there are a lot of options. The first one that came up was just over $7.

it is possible on ios devices like an iphone or ipads which it has a top quality screen recorder build in; so yes you can sample anything that reproduce sound on your on an ios device, but no, not on an android, because android screen recorders doesn’t allow you to do that

@@HansyPants184 well when it comes to getting anything that you want to sample from YT you also have the option of copying the link from any yt video that you want sample and then paste that link into a video to a wav converter websites so can then download the converted wav file which is what i used to do on android , you also have the option of using an audio interface which you can used to connect 2 phone together, one to send the sound and the other one to sample the sound

I think for iOS you need a tiny USB audio interface and then a USB to lightning adapter. Once you plug in such a device via the adapter on the lightning port all your audio will be recorded from the input of the usb / audio interface and audio out will be send there too. I used to have a tiny one from Behringer that has line in, line out and a headphone out and costs like 30 bucks or so. (It is not the best audio interface in the world but it is great for mobile setups)
