dat boi this isn’t race-baiting. Saying Kobe embraced Latinos does not mean he didn’t embrace everyone. It’s like people taking umbrage to Black Lives Matter. If we have to say it specifically, it’s because there’s a historical and systematic reason for it to be necessary. Nobody is saying only Black Lives Matter. And racial inequality, or any other inequality, isn’t fixed by ignoring race or whatever is unequal. How can you see inequality without seeing race, class, etc? Where would the inequality be found to be fixed? Anyway, that’s what this piece was about. How Kobe made an effort to reach out and embrace Latinos in LA and beyond. He learned Spanish and did interviews in Spanish with Spanish-speaking media here and abroad. This was his embrace...he saw us and spoke to us. By connecting on a full and meaningful level with others, many others, including with Latinos in this very particular way, Kobe, a Black man in America, was being an exceptional human being.
