Former NBA sharpshooter J.R. Smith vividly remembers being subbed out of a game early on in his career after Kobe Bryant schooled him, despite his coaching staff telling him what Kobe would do.
Smith, 37, made an appearance on the J.J. Redick Podcast last week and recalled being overconfident when preparing for a matchup with the Los Angeles Lakers legend before being served some humble pie.
“Byron Scott, my rookie year, said I’m guarding Kobe. In practice, we go over the walkthrough, and he said, ‘He’s going to take two dribble baseline and he’s going to pump fake, and pump fake again, stay down. It doesn’t matter how many times he pump fakes; just stay down.' I said, 'All right.' We go to shoot around. He said, ‘Rookie he’s going to take you down, two dribbles, stay down.’ I said, ‘All right, I got it.’ He said, 'Okay since you think you have it, the moment he does it, and you jump, I’m taking your a*s out of the game," Smith recalled
