I used to sail from langkawi to koh lipe in the late 80s early 90s and it was an amazing place. There were a few bungalows on the north east beach and not even a bar or restaurant to speak of, it was paradise. The locals were so friendly and the fishermen built long tail boats on the beach without a power tool in site. One of the best places I have ever visited. Boy it looks like it’s changed a lot since I lived out there, still I can’t wait to go back next year to check out all the changes
Sounds so interesting and different. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful memory. The island is still an underwater paradise, but not sure you will like the rest of the tourist development.
its changed a lot man, theres even horrific nightclubs blaring out music and strobes going etc, I was literally a mile away and couldnt sleep because of it. having said that still one of the best places on earth
I am currently in Khon Kaen. Very good to know the pros and cons of the different locations. We have also been traveling a lot, taking advantage of the hotel and Thai government discounts.
Great to see that and great to hear not only the "worth to see the island" arguments, but some negatives too. That gives a broader horizon, thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Marieta! People tend to share only the great aspects of a place. Koh Lipe is really beautiful, but there were some negatives as well. I did not feel it would be authentic not to mention them. Thanks so much for watching this video and thanks for your support!! ^^
I have visited Koh Lipe twice. The first time was a day trip from Langkawi in Malaysia which I spent 5 hours, the second time when I actually stayed on the island for 3 days. Love this island a lot
@@KrisWustrow Hi Kris I actually stayed in Koh Phi Phi for 3 nights, then went from there to Koh Lanta but only stayed for 1 night although I did have a chance to see a few beaches. From there, I went to Koh Lipe and stayed 3 nights there stopping at Koh Kradan, Koh Ngai and Koh Muk - the speedboat ride from Koh Lanta to Koh Lipe was quite bumpy but I would choose Koh Lipe over Koh Lanta even though Koh Lanta is nice. Koh Lipe does live up to its name as being the Maldives of Thailand
The best place to stay is Pooh Bar and Resort. It's on the walking street and was the first bar here in the 90s. It's amongst old trees and very relaxing, and quiet. You can't hear any boats, dogs, cats, or roosters! Deluxe room is only 2200 with breakfast. Pooh and Soi are lovely people and really give the local touch. And it's super-handy to both beaches, the 7-eleven, the walking street. Sunrise beach is a 5 minute walk away
Waow ! I'm currently making a plan to travel for Thailand and was about lost between channels and conversations. I feel so lucky that I ended up here :) You explain everything with important spots, giving all the details but on the same time keeping it simple and of course with amazing professional camera views ! It's really helping to get an idea. Thank you ! 🌴🌴
Hi Senem, thanks for the lovely comment. It means a lot! I am in the process of editing detailed videos of every Thai island I have visited (16+). This will take some time to upload on RU-vid. In the meantime, if you have questions, don't hesitate to let me know. Happy to help with information if I can. I'm very excited for you. Thailand is a wonderful country and I'm sure your trip is going to be fantastic. :)
Update may 2024. I saw a few dogs but no packs and no barking. There was very little trash on the beach when i hot there, but a few days ago the tides changed because we are going into the wet season and it was awful. It all happened between my morning walk and about 1 or 2 in afternoon I highly recommend this island. It is one of my favorites for diving and snorkeling. Most beautiful water i have seen anywhere in Thailand do far 0:08
Thanks for your update, Cyndie. Your note is very helpful! ☺ For snorkeling/diving, I really enjoyed Koh Ha (near Koh Lanta); the spots between Koh Chang and Koh Kut; and Koh Tao. 🐟🐠 I agree with you that water is amazing on Koh Lipe (especially in the dry season). Enjoy your trip!

Be sure to visit Patai Galah Beach! It's on the south side of the western part of Koh Lipe where there aren't any buildings, just forest and a beautiful, hidden private beach.
Your English sounds very good. Sometimes, in other videos, it's a little fast for me, but you have an excellent rhythm (speed) for a program. And your pronunciation is very clear, like the crystal water of Thailand. Best regards, Vito.
Coconut donut man? Sounds delicious!! :) I did not see him :( But there are almost no tourists on Koh Lipe right now and the locals have no one to sell to.
What is the name of the little hotel at the north point with nice bungalows that you mentioned? Im going there in a couple of weeks and want to know please.
Very nice video, very informative. Im planing to go in the end of the year, since is close do Malasya (wich I can reach by train later on, departuring from Hat Tay) Do you think it is a good ideia spend 3 ou 4 full days in Koh Lipe ?
Thanks Juliano! You need 1 full day for a snorkeling/diving trip and 1 full day to walk around the island, enjoy the beach, and kayak around. If you love snorkeling, stay longer. There are lots of underwater spots to explore.
@@reefwiz99 It's a fair question.. We read rumors online as well and were a bit apprehensive. From my experience, I found the island extremely friendly and welcoming. People went above and beyond to help us out. We had issues with our filming equipment and the community pulled together to assist us. I felt safe and silly for being afraid of this island. There are currently no tourists on Коh Тао and no big parties. The island is quiet. We only snorkeled, but the quality of the water is exceptional. I see why this is a great diving location. I recommend going there. :)
She forgot to mention that the diving is very cheap (2800 baht pp for two dives) and outstanding. 3rd best diving in Thailand behind Similan and Surin.
@@TravelRoads Koh Tao is overrated IMHO. Koh Ha has the best visibility of anywhere I've seen. It was like being in a swimming pool full of fish and coral!
@ Travel Stories editor -- So, I'll be at Koh Phi Phi in November; after that I'll have 3 nights to ferry to either: (a) Koh Lipe, or (b) Koh Lanta, or (c) Koh Ngai. Which do you think?
Hi Kris! There are no direct ferries right now running between the islands (covid + no tourists), so commuting might take longer than you expect or you might have to hire a private longtail boat (expensive). Koh Lanta is the easiest transfer from Koh PhiPhi and makes the most sense for 3 nights. If you like snorkeling/diving, take a day trip to Koh Ha or Koh Rock (they have 2-3 departures a week from Koh Lanta- it's worth it! The water visibility is incredible). Koh Lipe is more exotic than Koh Lanta, but it's going to take you a full day of travel to get there and a full day to get out, so not worth it. Koh Ngai is very small. If the weather is bad, there will be nothing for you to do (+ it's expensive and difficult to get to). Koh Lanta is a big island and you will have plenty to discover for 3 nights. The island has many beaches to choose from. I hope this helps. ❤
There are many beaches in Thailand, wrongly, the Philippines where there are not many beaches, only need a boat, the food in Thai accommodation is better 🤟🤟🤟

You need your passport every time you cross an international border. Unless you a have special day trip organized by your boat company? Check with your tour provider.
Walking isn't the best mode of transport - cycling is. We took our mountain bikes on the boat but you can hire bikes here. Don't use those 3-wheel motorcycles - there are too many scooters and the 3 wheel things and they are a pain in the neck when you are trying to walk around. We totally explored the island on our bikes and can even ride along the beaches at low tide
The Island isn't expensive IMHO. we are paying 1500 baht for a great room. 7-eleven prices are a bit extreme but restaurants and bars are cheap (2 for 1 cocktails from 4-10pm at some bars)
@@TravelRoads Covid prices were sub-1000. 1500 is because my GF is friends with Pooh and Soi, but...rooms here are still this price for the foreseeable future. Soi just upgraded us to the best rooms which are still only 2200 baht a night. Some of the other resorts are up to 7000 again, but we never spend much time in our room and don't care about sea views
In the last 13 years this has turned into a real tourist trap. Crowded and overpriced. You should talk about the burning garbage dumps beside the hotels.
You can take a speed boat in the morning and come back in the afternoon. It takes 2 hours to reach the island. I would recommend staying at least 1 night. Not sure a day trip is worth it.
I did this day trip back in Jan 2017 but from Langkawi in Malaysia - it was less than 1.5 hours speedboat trip each way including the transfer to a Thai boat to get to the island. I'm not sure if this service still operates from there anymore but this is another suggestion which I did
Hi Massimo, if you need additional information, let me know. Or if you have helpful tips or comments on island life I have omitted, please list them here, so other travelers can read the information. ☀
I've lived in Thailand 15 years. Granted, I'm more sensitive than most to barking dogs...but this is one of things that ruins many places for me. Dogs that aren't owned by anyone, but who are fed scraps by whoever. Many revert to their wolf nature (their dna is 99.9% wolf, after all), howling at night, vying for dominance in their packs.... I've heard some say they are not a problem there, but just seeing, and hearing, that one on the walking street makes me think Lipe is not for me. Plus, I'm just tired of 'Thailand for tourists,' which it looks like this definitely has become. Too bad.
There are a lot of dogs on Koh Lipe and they move around in packs. Most of them are pretty big and love barking at farangs. This has happened to us on other islands as well. It's just that Koh Lipe is very small- and the dogs are everywhere. If you're sensitive to barking dogs, I would recommend Koh Kradan- great water visibility, zero dogs. :D
