I'm back in Morton Grove, IL, with spring around the corner, although the temperatures are still a chilly 50 degrees in Chicagoland. My visit to Kohl's was solely to return Amazon items, given that Kohl's serves as a return center for Amazon orders. Interestingly, I've never made a purchase from Kohl's, which might hint at some challenges the retailer is facing. With inflation looming and consumers feeling the pinch, Kohl's, along with other retailers, anticipates a tough 2024 ahead.
Despite this, let's venture inside and explore. Kohl's, boasting 1,165 locations, has a rich history dating back to its founding by Polish immigrant Maxwell Kohl in 1927. Originally a corner grocery store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, it expanded into a successful local chain before branching out into department stores in 1962. Over the years, ownership changed hands, with British American Tobacco Company taking control in 1972, followed by a sale to BATUS Inc. in 1979. However, a group of investors acquired the company in 1986 and eventually took it public in 1992.
Kohl's, headquartered in the Milwaukee suburb of Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, reached a milestone in 2012 by becoming the largest department store chain in the United States, surpassing J. C. Penney. Notably, it's listed on both the S&P 400 and the Fortune 500. Despite its impressive stature, the company faced challenges in 2019, ranking as the 23rd-largest retailer in the United States by revenue.
