Thanks for this video. I do think (IMAO) it may have been very helpful if it was explained the correct method to find Top Dead Center. Before making any adjustments. Just saying.
@@mygiguser you said zero point zero 5 and zero point zero 7. It happens. Ya just don't want a viewer taking it literal and then cursing you out 'cause it didn't work. Unless you were talking faster than I was listening, lol.
Great video. Side note, check to make sure both springs are coming out the same lenght as you turn the flywheel. The valve seat came out on mine and left the valve stuck open.
Well done video. A trick for people to find the correct crank position is turn the flywheel until both rockers are loose. Take out the plug and run a piece of coat hanger wire in against the piston to find bottom dead center. Easy.
You know actually this is an excellent video , of course removing the hood ?? Just lift it straight up after it is in open resting position ! Remove wiring first for the headlight's ! The trick of aligning the magnet with the new ignition coil for top dead center making sure both valves are closed , that was ok " but I prefer removing the spark plug and using a long screwdriver to FEEL the Piston on top dead center by turning the flywheel slowly by hand and visually looking at both valves closed ! Also you said to remove the ignition coil wire because it was self igniting WRONG if the key is in the OFF position the ignition coil is grounded and cannot fire the spark plug ! Also you should specify that it is the hex screw that LOCKS the rocker arm assembly in place NOT the nuts that hold it down ! And if you use a silicone sealer gasket maker for the gasket it needs to be rtv black oil resistant silicone sealer type ! You can use only silicone and eliminate the cork gasket all together ! Just lay a bead about 1/4 inch all the way around the valve cover gasket wait about five minutes and put valve cover back on but do it straight on as in have it lined up with the mounting holes so you don't have to wiggle the valve cover around messing up the silicone sealer ! One more thing , when and BEFORE YOU attempt to remove the 4 top cover bolts IF they are hard to break free DO NOT FORCE THEM TO BREAK FREE OR EXERT HARD PRESSURE ON THE WRENCH TO BREAK THEM FREE !! you will wring the bolts off in the engine block if their rusted up or just gummed up always use break free lubricant or deep creep or similar bolt loosening deep penetrating oil on those bolts and spray the threads protruding under the plastic cover the threads of the bolts let soak in penetrating oil and if still hard to turn before you use hard force and break them off try a small electric battery powered drill with the impact setting turned down very very low so the drill will lightly impact the bolts but not forcefully turn them , the knock knock knock of the impact from the drill will 90% of the time save you from breaking these cover bolts off in the engine !!! One more thing when you use the feeler guage use .0005 on intake valve and .0007 on the exhaust valve that's thousands of an inch ! If you can't SLIDE the feeler guage back and forth across the rocker and valve gap with very little resistance it's TOO TIGHT ! and always always always after you have set both clearances turn the engine at least a few revolutions and reset the piston on top dead center then recheck you clearances on intake and exhaust valves again !
Great video and straight to the point. I didn't know they had made an aftermarket piece to keep the valve cover from dripping, oil. I ended up fabricating a piece of metal on my kohler cause the dripping on the exhaust was driving my nuts. Thanks
Thanks for video. I did a gasket replacement and valve adjustment. The adjustment of the valve lash locking nut and screw was the opposite of what I’m used too. Had a hard time getting my head around it because of the valve lash adjustments during my Volkswagen days.
Thanks for this info! REALLY!!! I Had my engine start back fireing and 1 minute later it stopped running. Itried to restart it with a battery charger on start. The engine acted like the compression was being blocked all the sudden. At 1st I thought the battery, then I thought the starter, then fuel blockage, so I pulled the spark plug and the starter spun faster than before. Then I found out the valves may need adjustment so I Adjusted them. Still had engine kick back. So I found this RU-vid video an found the exhaust valve rod guide was pushed out of hole to far as you suggested and pushed it back in and readjusted the valves and it started. Thanks for this video info it saved me 5,000 $ as Istarted looking for a new mower today but thought I would try 1 more time. Thanks for the info!
He is stating an issue he found with his and the valve guide is what the stem of the valve rises on inside the cylinder head they can loosen overtime especially if the engine runs too hot from dirty cooling fins.
You are a very talented and thoughtful mechanic - been working on small engines for years and years, but I learned something today. Great accent by the way! Thanks!
Great video. Only suggestion is during the installation of the valve cover gasket, the new silicone should be liberally applied to one surface after both have been cleaned of oil and any debris, but more importantly, the liquid gasket should be allowed to form up for about 5-8 minutes before reinstalling the bolts that hold the valve cover on. Reason being, the liquid Selena the with just squeeze right out and create a potential gap. Additionally, only finger tighten during that part of the install. Let sit for 40 minutes and come back to re-torque the bolts.
Do these engines have a compression release ? Is the valve adjustment made at TDCwfen spark plug is firing? Do you turn engine backwards to bring it to TDC ? I assume the comp release holds the ex valve open to assist starting on some engines. I don’t know if Kohler uses comp real ease I. I would have to think it uses SOMETHING like that
If you take out the spark plug, then you don't have compression. The valve closes by a spring. You can turn the engine back and forth at TDC to find the spot where both rockers are loose.
@@mygiguser. On some engines a compression release is used as a starting. aid Why does tightening loos valves fix what most people think is a bad starter or Battery ? Seriously
Very nicely done, thank you! Lighting and focus are outstanding, and your directions are clear and to the point. I wasn't sure I wanted to tackle a DIY valve adjustment but with this video, I'm pretty sure I can get it done.
Thats not correct. You could be on the rise , ramp, of the cam lobe. Pull spark plug and stick screw drive in cylinder and bring piston to top. Im not even sure if this is correct. Briggs calls for pistion to be 1/4 past TDC. I can not find info for kohler so TDC should be fine.
I got MTD mower it Troy Built but it MTD they come out with Powermore 420cc engines Honda clone it a 2016 model great warranty 1 year lasted 1 year 2 months and blew up i put this engine on it 23 HP KOHLER single cinder twin valve i got engine off of Husqvarna LGT2554 Lawn Tractor fat guy owned it he broke the mower in half , half bent and half broke said he gofer hole . not that old of mower but i got it 200.00 and it fit ,moves in yard real good just little to much .You can cut your grass at 10 MPH and be done .
@@mygiguser it been good engine i keep it serviced and maintained runs good .I have seen a lot of complaint's one guy was pointing out all the problems he was having and what you going to have but before he started talking he said he just lets it set outside in weather ? well that could be the reason to all your problems and tarp don't cost much but i didn't leave comment . so don't leave your equipment in weather ,take care of it it take care of you , that way i see things , great video mygiguser keep up great work
I have a issue with fuel puddling at the mouth of the carburetor. The mouth of the carburetor should be dry. It seems there is blow back from the engine through the carburetor. Either the valve adjust is way too tight (no clearance) or perhaps carbon build up on the seat which would hold a valve open slightly.
@@mygiguser That is a good point. When I bought this well used (non running) gravely zero turn mower I had to rewire (it was butchered), replace missing and broken parts plus the carburetor because the fuel solenoid was not working. Yesterday I disassembled the new carb to inspect for crud and sticking float but all was well. I thoroughly cleaned all the orifices. The engine never sounded strong. Fortunately I came across your video and I inspected the valves. The exhaust clearance was way too loose and the intake had NO clearance. I just started it up and finished the lawn. IT RUNS LIKE A NEW MOWER! No lugging no black exhaust smoke. Thank you
You have set the engine ignition sequence for spark generation by the alignment of the coil and magnet. If the flywheel is not easily revealed, the same thing can be done by bringing the piston up to TDC on the compression stroke. This is exactly when spark will ignite the power stroke.
I just got the same mower off my dad and it back fires when you idle down and when you idle up it makes a sort of rough banging sound as the cylinder fires. Could that be the valves? I think it's alway done it even new. Just never heard it from any other kohler 21.
You gotta be careful to double check your cover don't leak. Mine caught fire and melted all the plastic on the engine. Didn't damage anything beyond that lucky but the cost is about $100 for parts depending on what gets damaged.
Recently repaired somebody else's repair on one of these engines in a Cub Cadet, the intake rocker was not pressing against the valve at all, and there was no Torx recess in the rocker stud to make an adjustment secure. The nuts were the only thing retaining the rockers, I don't know what all was supposed to be in there, it was my first time in a Kohler engine, but it was one of many things wrong.
Hi,I have a Craftsman 4 years old Riding mower 21 hp Briggs & stratton engine . Motor hard to turn with starter ,new starter & battery--It make 3/4 turn & if if make 1 to 2 turn start right up. When starter can not turn it heat up ,without Spark plug engine move ok , I checked the valve clearance .004 & .006 -- Do you think it is a Compression release valve ,how I can be sure of that. Please help ,what other thing it could be?
Sorry your comment was blocked by RU-vid, i just found your comment in the review list. If you think you have a problem with a compression release valve, just take the oil dip stick out, and see it it starts then. The oil fill hole will release the pressure, if there is any. But be aware of oil spilling out.
Thank you for this video! My mower is running again! I noticed on my mower that the stud that holds the rocker arm had loosened out of the block on the exhaust side!! So I had to tighten that back in first, then make the adjustments. Check those studs also! Thanks again, great video.
Good video except you said 0 point 0 7 and 0 point 0 5 wich would be 0.07 and 0.05 is 70 thousandth and 50 thousandths. It is point 007 and point 005 is 7 and five thousandths
Insert a 0.127 mm (0.005 in.) feeler gauge between end of 1 valve and rocker arm. Turn adjuster or adjustment nut (based on design), until a slight drag is felt. Hold in this position and tighten locking nut or setscrew securely. Torque setscrew to 7.9 N·m (70 in. lb.). After tightening recheck adjustment. Proper valve clearance is 0.101/0.152 mm (0.004/0.006 in.). 4. Repeat procedure for other valve on side 1. 5. Viewed from PTO end, rotate crankshaft 270° (3/4 turn) counterclockwise and align crankshaft keyway with cylinder 2, which now puts cylinder at TDC on compression stroke. 6. Repeat steps 3-4 for setting valve clearance on side 2. 7. Rotate crankshaft to check for free operation of valve train. Check for clearance between valve spring coils at full lift, or bending of push rod(s) can occur. Minimum allowable clearance is 0.25 mm
Thanks for a great video-turorial. I'm going to make this repair in the next couple of weeks. How much hours your Kohler had on the moment of the job you made here?
Thanks for a great video. Very clear and concise! I'm working on a neighbors Cub Cadet with SV590-003 19 hpKohler Courage that was rough running, backfiring and eventually not starting at all but just backfiring. Carb was a mess so I replaced it as well as ignition module. then I discovered the flywheel key broken. replaced that and the new one sheared and it backfired again. Could valve adjustment cause that? Or what do you think it is?
Broken flywheel key: Hitting a rock or stump, loose blades, or loose flywheel. Ignition problems maybe. Adjusting the valves should be easy to rule that out, then also adjusting the gap for the ignition coil ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bZ1SiQuKVBk.html and then the solenoid problem, i describe in the description of this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8nnACUkswxA.html what happens. How does your engine run in idle? Is it backfiring when it is running?
I have this mower kohler courage 19 I was told that the bots have a habit of coming loose on the fly wheel I always check mine, that will damage flywheel, also my bolts that holds the motor on were loose so glad I found that problem
Did you re-use the cork gasket? If so, did you use gasket sealer between the cork and the valve cover- or just make a new "gasket" with the black stuff?
I have a sv600 kohler 20 hp and adjusted valves to the correct measures but it gets stuck on the compression stroke sometimes and then spins over. Would u possibly know the issue?
Hi Sir. Thank You for the instructions on the video. I have a question for You. To your knowledge, Do these engines have a cooling fan shroud that cover the cylinder head?
Excellent video. I have one correction though. When you say the clearance on the valves it is not 0.05 and 0.07 .......it is 0.005" and 0.007" . I hope this helps people because making it 0.05 and 0.07 would not do a good results. Thank you and good luck. Zee
Sorry to say pistons have no springs and there is no need to take the springs off the valves either ,please before you give advice know what your talking about.
