Kohler Valve Cover Gasket

How to replace the valve cover gasket on a Kohler engine. The gasket is made of cork, and it breaks very easy, when the valve cover screws are set to tight. My personal preference is round and about 30 in lbs, but that is just me. Take a peak at this video, i show how this gasket looks like after a year of use.

The picture at 6:00 shows the muffler under the valve cover. It's a good idea to cover the muffler with a plate bolted to the frame where those two bolts are. Put it between the valve cover and muffler to stop the heat from dying out the gasket and keep the heat away from the valve cover.

@@StewMcLeod I did the same thing after the oil leaked on my mufler and started a fire! horrible design, shame on Kohler. I'd upload a photo, but don't see an option for it.

Thank you for posting this video. I'm a 60+ lady, the designated family mower mechanic, but I haven't done this particular repair...yet. So nice to have a well explained, focused (literally and figuratively) video on the topic.

Tried new gasket, tried Loctite to hold the bolts in place, - did not work. Paid a service guy to look at it. He said my engine block was cracked, the tractor was toast, and offered me $50 for my Cub Cadet. I then tried Permetex Right Stuff. Mowed twice and there is no leak. Permetex for the win.

Meaning you used permetex to make a gasket or to seal the crack on your engine

This is how to do a video!! Nice title graphic!! not wasting time, speeding through the parts that want speeding up. And you used a tripod or something so you didn't look drunk. AND YOU RECORDED THE RIGHT WAY! (probably a real camera??) Someone with sense. Thank you.

You didn't remove the inner sleeve from the valve cover. A lot of oil collects in there. Really needs a good clean out before refitting. otherwise short and to the point.

I don't see that. If it starts leaking for you, then you tightened the bolts too much. I recommend to buy a new valve cover, and really follow my video. I have heard that people stop using the casket all together, and just use that silicone gasket maker instead. I haven't tried that yet, because mine is still working with what i show here in the video (a little over two years now).

mygiguser ok, 2 years is not bad, I miss understood you, it sound like it’s a yearly maintenance item. I have seen a video on someone using just the gasket maker. I wonder how that is holding up?
