Once Brian Lara said, “In sports there are certain individuals who are just one, there are boxers with better stats than Muhammad Ali, there are players with better stats than Michael Jordan but they come to your mind whenever you think of that sport. Similarly when you talk about cricket, we all will talk about Sachin Tendulkar”

In modern times, cricket is synonymous to Virat Kohli because of the domination he showed and the number of matches he won singlehandedly. Today, whether a batsman or bowler doesn't associate his name to Virat Kohli, then he is not a good or famous cricketer.

@@ashishrudra1381 bro both their eras is different. Any batsmen from now will be more evolved because the game has evolved so much. Today’s grounds are small, different powerplay rules, DRS, New shots etc. Earlier 250 was a good total in ODI and now it has gone to around 350!

@@fitspot34 Brother, first read the comment properly. I said in 'modern times', there is no one close to Kohli. I am not a person to draw compare or draw conclusion. Whatever I said is every cricket fan's experience in modern times. I am just showing another side to the main comment. It is foolishness for anybody to compare Virat and Sachin , given they played in different eras and in different situations. Even the bowlers are clever nowadays with all the variations. So, you can't say that only the previous era had good bowlers and good conditions. If a game evolves, it does so equally for both the bowlers and batsman.

@@fitspot34virat has nothing to do with boundaries length because it's not only for him,and virat is not six hitting player ,he can run 3-3 by pushing the every ball.can you see the difference between virat and other cricketers, virat is way more ahead of any batsman in the world. Ya, your one point is right that game is evolving so we can't compare that much but ya can say that if the hunger that kohli has he would have been greatest in that era also. So don't compare it by saying about boundaries, powerplay, shots etc.

I have so many amazing memories of Sachin. Sachin brought cricket to every household in India and players like Virat and others are maintaining and keeping it alive.

Being a 90s kid, I can just say that the emotion that Sachin brought out in the whole nation was single handful incremental in inspiring many of today’s leading cricketers including Dhoni and Virat. Although titles like GOD OF CRICKET are probably exaggeration in today’s competitive cricket where stats and successful chases are used to a compare the greatness of players but to understand why and how this title was bestowed upon Tendulkar , perhaps, would be impossible for todays gen to comprehend unless a Time Machine was invented. 90s were the most turbulent period in cricket in India. The team of 11 used to majorly depend on Sachin for scoring and he used to deliver but even if he would hold the fort at one end, who would guard the other ? That’s where chases were not successful. The moment Sachin would fall, the teams would collapse like a pack of cards. Add to that, the match fixing scandals that were going on. Amidst all this if there was one thing that kept an Indian cricket lover going , that was this master blaster’s class master acts. One must also acknowledge the important role played by TV revolution in that time. One could see a person in flesh and blood ravaging the best bowling attacks in the world. So, cannot blame people of those times who looked upon to him, for calling him the God of Cricket. He was a master of the game , take wickets when needed and played the game as a gentleman should. He could have had so many more centuries under his belt had it not been for Steve bucknor’s wrong umpiring decisions and Sachin’s decision to never question on field umpire’s decision. The commitment he had towards his game was unmatchable. Sometimes greatness does not only lie in how much you achieved but also the legacy you leave and how you isnore generations which is what he has done. Perhaps the same way that Kapil Dev inspired him when his team lifted 83 World Cup. But Sachin’s legacy and his game inspired youngsters like Virat , Yuvraj and Dhoni to be who they are today. So, comparing legends on the basis of mere statistics does not do justice. I am a Sachin fan but also the likes of all those who are responsible for uplifting Indian cricket to its present reputation and just like the game itself, it was not a one man job. This is the result of joint efforts of visionary leaders like Sourav Ganguly for promoting youngsters like Yuvraj , Kaif , Raina , Zaheer ( and many more ), Dhoni for his never dying attitude and exemplary leadership, Virat for raising the standards of game to an unmatched level and the likes of many more… the list goes on Sachin Ignited a passion , a fire in the young hearts of all these incredibly talented people and that’s one thing that makes him unmatchable .

*MY OPINION* Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar are both widely regarded as two of the greatest batsmen of all time. They have both achieved incredible things in their careers, and it is difficult to say definitively who is better. Here is a statistical comparison of the two players: | Player | Total runs | Centuries | Half-centuries | Average | |---|---|---|---|---| | Sachin Tendulkar | 34,357 | 100 | 164 | 48.52 | | Virat Kohli | 25,582 | 76 | 131 | 53.48 | As you can see, Tendulkar has scored more runs and centuries than Kohli, but Kohli has a higher batting average. This suggests that Kohli is a more consistent batsman, but Tendulkar has the ability to score big runs more often. Another important factor to consider is the era in which each player played. Tendulkar played in an era when bowling attacks were generally stronger than they are today. Kohli has benefited from playing in an era of shorter boundaries and flatter pitches.

The greatest in an era can be the greatest in any other era despite the conditions. It is the special qualities like passion, love, hunger, clarity, discipline, fitness, consciousness, intensed energy and an ever existing quality of learning and improving one's game which makes a player the greatest. All these qualities are visible in Virat Kohli and so, he can be the greatest of any era. Sachin Tendulkar was the first to show these and so, he will be highly respected. Virat took it to a whole new level with his fitness and match winning capability, which should be respected as well. As per the era, they showed us the best way to play cricket. I am not taking them as GODs but we can understand it in this way. We Indians are taught to be inclusive. We have so many GODs which in different eras came and taught us how to live our life the best possible way. There was Shiva, Rama, Krishna, Buddha. We don't compare between them. If you look at the averages of the peers when they were playing, it is usually a good baseline measure. At Sachin’s peak, an avg of 35-40 was really good. Anything above was remarkable. Today this has shifted to 45-50. This means, the modern day cricketer has atleast a 100 run difference over a period of 10 ODIs. This will explain Kohli getting to Sachin’s feat in about 200 matches lesser than Sachin. But, even if you were to say ok, if they’re equal after balancing out the differences , Virat is a better impact player than Sachin since Virat was able to soak up more pressure situations compared to Sachin. Not to mention he is a better fielder. Having said that, Sachin was a great bowling option as well. So how do they rank? They are equals in ODIs. Bowlers used to terrify batsmen and 250+ score is match winning score. Now in this era we have 350+ totals still hard for bowlers to defend. Such is the situation of cricket being played now. No comparison between Sunil gavaskar and Sachin as well. Different era different conditions where batsmen used to face fiercy fast bowlers with less protection. Nothing to take away from Kohli, it's just the different era where batsmen have upper hand compared to bowlers. Virat is unbelievable player in this era with consistency in all 3 formats.

Virat is an absolute legend of the game. But it would be unfair to compare him to Sachin. Virat has a few advantages. 1. Better pitches. 2. Batter friendly rules ( fielding restrictions, two new balls - before 15 years the ball used to reverse swing a lot after 35 overs) 3. Better batters around him. 4. Bowling standards have dropped a bit (that's my personal opinion though). 5. Faster outfield.

In one of the worst teams with medicre players around in the team, under confident team, carried the team single handedly for a major part. 2. List of reasons why Sachin Tendulkar should not be compared with Kohli or anyone else: i) The bowlers Sachin played against were the best of all time. If you look at the list of players inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, many of the bowlers happen to be from Sachin's era. The highest wicket takers of all time, the best spinners (Shane Warne, Muttiah Muralitharan, etc.), the best fast bowlers of all time (Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Glenn McGrath, Courtney Walsh, Allan Donald, Curtly Ambrose, Dale Steyn, Shaun Pollock, etc.), the fastest bowlers of all time (Shoaib Akhtar, Brett Lee, etc.) all played in the 90's and 2000's. Batting against the best bowling attacks of today is like batting against Zimbabwe of Sachin's era. ii) Batting was more difficult in Sachin's era, and it was, in general, a low-scoring era. Even a target of 200 was considered formidable and defendable in the 90's and early 2000's. Today, even a target of 400 isn't safe. That certainly does not mean that today's cricketers are more talented than former cricketers. It just means that they are playing in a different era. Not only was Sachin's era an era of the deadliest bowlers, but also an era of the deadliest pitches. Pitches then were far less predictable, bouncier and more bowling-friendly than today's pitches. Even the Perth pitch is no longer as good as it used to be. And the grounds were larger. What used to be 75 feet is now 60 feet or so. iii) No DRS. Sachin has been given out by wrong decision at least around 48 times, several of them when he was batting in the 90s. If he had DRS at his disposal, his records would have been much better. iv) Rules today are more favorable for batsmen. Today's ODI matches are played with 2 new balls, so no reverse swing at all in the death overs. Combine that with the power plays, field restrictions, better coaching and you get what you see these days. It's no longer a fair contest between batsmen and bowlers. v) Sachin battled several deadly injuries over the course of his career and had at least 3 major surgeries. Some of those injuries could easily end the career of any other player. But Sachin persisted, upgraded his techniques and his batting style and managed to stay on the top until the end, despite a short, lean phase. Virat's injuries have been minor in comparison. vi) It's easier to bat when you have several other match-winners in the team. Virat has always had that luxury. Sachin didn't. Virat has always been a part of a strong Indian team. Sachin, for most of his career, was the lone warrior and a pillar of his team. He batted under tremendous pressure, even when he was not chasing, and often had to combine defense with aggression. That was excruciatingly difficult under those difficult batting conditions. vii) If you are really going to compare Sachin and Virat (or anyone else), compare them on the basis of how high they raised the standards of their day. Let me give you an example to illustrate what I mean. The first ODI match in history was played in 1971. The first double century in an ODI match was scored in 2010 - 39 years later, by Sachin. But as soon as Sachin hit one, several other batsmen started hitting double centuries in ODI. 10 have been scored in the past 14 years. Now, again, that does not mean that the batsmen of the past were less capable than today's batsmen. The fact that Jaskaran Malhotra hit six consecutive sixes in six balls in an ODI match and Sunil Gavaskar hit none in 108 ODI matches does not mean that Sunil Gavaskar knew less about how to hit sixes than Jaskaran Malhotra. It just means that cricket was played differently then, and that this new level had not been unlocked yet - batsmen were not yet expected to bat at that level or in that fashion. Sachin unlocked many such levels. He did what he did in an era when no one else managed to do it, and he did it well. 3 decades ago, no one would have even imagined that there would be players scoring 100 international centuries, 34000+ runs and so on. But Sachin did it, against all odds. viii) Sachin was naturally talented. And he combined that talent with an insane level of dedication. He scored centuries in his first-class debuts in Ranjhi trophy, Irani trophy and Dulip trophy, all of them at the age of 15, against national-level players. He played his first international match against the likes of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Abdul Qadir, etc. at the age of 16, and scored a century in test cricket - the most difficult format, at the age of 17! Compare that with Virat's timeline. ix) Sachin has a much better record in test cricket - the most difficult format, where bowlers are able to try all variations, where defense and aggression are both tested for longer periods of time, along with batsmen's temperament and endurance. x) All the above points must have made it clear that comparing players of different eras is a nonsensical exercise. If you are still going to compare them, compare them by their techniques. And in that regard, Sachin is clearly the greatest ever, even according to Virat himself. xi) Cricket today has lost its earlier charm due to the T20s. T20 format is to cricket what pornography is to sex. It gives you instant gratification, but of a much poorer quality. Anyone who has followed cricket since the 90's knows what gem Sachin Tendulkar was. You cannot sum up his contribution to the world of cricket through statistics alone. There are boxers with better records than that of Muhammad Ali, but Muhammad Ali still remains the greatest. Anyone who has seen Muhammad Ali play knows why. The same goes for Sachin and cricket.

Performance of a player should be evaluated based on how that player is performing very much ahead of others in the team and other players around the world at that time of play. When Sachin was playing at early days, no other player in the world played like him with strike rate, facing quality bowling and more importantly the crowd pressure..... No benchmark was there for sachin other than Viv Richards ( that too in terms of hitting with better strike rate)... If you see now.. you can pick lot more players with more or less similar strike rate, average, consistency like Kohli.... Already Sachin is an example and benchmark for him to emulate... One thing Kohli is ahead of Sachin is his consistency and aggression while chasing targets and scoring from 90 to 100..... Considering all the parameters ( quality of bowling, cricket fielding rules, facility for training, range of shots, batting technique, crowd pressure, calmness and inspiration of fellow players, etc) Sachin cannot be compared with anybody for ever... he is unique

The rules were different, the bowlers were more lethal like Wasim, McGrath, Waqar etc. to name a few. The rules favoured the bowlers more. The boundaries were bigger. Also there was no DRS. So it's totally unfair. Although I would like to add that Virat is a much better performer under pressure and also Virat is definitely a way better finisher than SRT as far as batting is concerned.
