Koi Demerits Should You Care? | Koi Talk | Ep  

Great show as always, maybe I'm just different but I think its a real shame that koi are not viewed as pets or even animals most of the time, probably one of the only living creatures that's treated almost identically to a classic car in every sense, not even referred to as an animal but a piece like its a canvass hanging on a wall. Tiniest imperfection oh that koi's no good move it on, if it is good catch it, stress it and bag it up for a koi show, the nicer the koi the further removed it is from being treated like a living thing IMO.

Good Topic for this morning, all in the eye of the buyer , I do not show, so my philosophy is if I like I will buy it (if price is "reasonable" 🙂) whether it ticks all the boxes or not

I just bought a Kohaku with A red eye and red at pectoral fin joint. If it didn’t have the demerits it wouldn’t have been for sale. It would spend another year in a mud pond. It’s going to be a huge koi which is what I want with great look other wise.

The demerit I'm most unwilling to overlook is also deformed or broken pectoral fins (many of Momotaro's kois seem to have this issue). Otherwise one red eye, motoaka or other so called demerits sometimes may even work to enhance the overall beauty of a koi.

A great topic and interesting discussion. I have pond full of attractive koi, everybody shocked when I say all were under £300, the compromises are big on paper but barely noticed in the pond, like the Omasako Shiro with good body and great pattern, only £250 due to the Beni patch on a pec that might even get hidden by the motoguru when it pulls back. 90% of people never notice the Beni patch. I also think overall presence of a koi in the pond makes it easier to overlook demerits. Remember, virtually any hobbyist who's kept koi for more than 3 or 4 years will have koi where the quality has dropped off and demerits are plentiful.... But it doesn't stop them rejecting new koi at the dealers at buying stage and this is how I get my bargains!

I really found this interesting, I look for quirks in my koi choice!! Sorry, I know that statement is probably blasphemy to a lot of keepers, but I look at it as giving a good home to the unwanted fish!!

I've seen that myself with dealers changing there prices depending on the person or time of year if I ran my business like that I'd lose customers 😕 but it does make ya think 🤔

Well all.my kohaku got red in they eye 🙈 and they cost a fair wack but in reality iv seen in the AJ koi with red eye and beni in both pec but they are 90cm + monsters the uk are sadly a bit different especially in the show scene for me a big body is very important to get true volume on a 85cm fish is very hard you need to push your system so hard its scary and go beyond what the koi industry recommends for filters but it's such a minority part of the hobby it gets over looked where in japan size and volume counts for so much more

Interesting chat strikes me that the English judging system is tailored to go sanke and doesn't have much room for anything else to get a look in it feels like the whole judging system needs an extra element that can't be measured in the usual ways sort of a "presence" factor which some fish just seem to have
