Yes, but you can actually have koi in a tank that is not that huge. As long as they have room to swim and you do frequent water changes they can be kept in a reasonable size tank. The reason why they say to have a huge tank is because many people do very little water changes and the store owners want to sale bigger aquariums. More profit.
