Floating baskets with impatiens. I tie them to something so they don’t interfere with the waterfalls. In about a month, the baskets are full of flowers in the full sun. They can be trimmed when they get leggy and the blooming starts again. My goldfish spawned in the roots.
I buy black pool noodles from Amazon to put across the top edges of 10 x 10 baskets held in place with 14” cable ties. My first year doing this. I never expected them to grow so huge and spawning after a while. My grandchildren found that there were babies swimming around by 4th of July. Live in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Nice pond! I would tale all the rocks out of the bottom, raise the pump off the bottom, vacuum the bottom on a regular basis, prevent run offs when in rains. Also protect the fish from predators.
Thanks Dude. As with most things I do, this was a result of “mission creep”. Started out just to update the landscape then moved to replace the patio and hey while we are at it let’s put in a koi pond!
To be honest BCR, I'm curious about that myself. In theory they should be fine. Their metabolism slows down and they hang at bottom of pond. It is deep enough that it should not totally freeze over. Again in theory. We will see how they do.
I use a de-icer in the winter months. Always keep a hole so the gases can escape. I use my pump too even though it’s not recommended. Always at the bottom like an aerator. Works great. I have a very small pond.
