Kojo Tsikata saved 4th Republic from another Rawlings-engineered coup plot - Nyaho-Tamakloe 

The full story was like this. When it became clear that the NDC had lost the 2000 elections, some NDC Big men went to see Rawlings and impress upon him not to relinquish power to the NPP. Rawlings sought another opinion indirectly from Kojo Tsikata through other people. Capt. Tsikata ( rtd. ) advised against such a move. Later the US Government also got intelligence on this development and sent a strong warning presented in the form of an advice to Rawlings not to go ahead with this unproductive plan and Rawlings obliged.

Victor Smith, who was Personal Assistant to Rawlings, confirmed the move to stop the electoral process at some point, inorder not to hand over power to the NPP by adding that, a letter of some sort came from the US Government addressed to Rawlings and after he ( Rawlings ) read it ( the letter ) he became very moody & when Victor Smith asked him what it was, Rawlings said it was a letter from the US Government.

Both JJ and Kojo Tsikata are late so what Nyaho is saying cannot be confirmed or denied to establish some truth.
