Koka's Drone Box is a physical synthesiser. It's a musical art object. The sound comes from stepper motors and various resonator objects attached to them.
Physical objects have an inexplicable magic. Sometimes they reveal themselves and you simply embrace them, but sometimes you have to search for them forever. For example, Teodor, Koka's son found this pine cone when he was two. Koka didn't want to take it home, but Teo insisted. Since then the cone was gathering dust on the shelf until Koka spontaneously tried to spin it on the drone box. However, Koka spent days trying to find the right kick. He tried papers of all different thicknesses, shapes and sizes until a real bonus card with a small steel wire and a tiny piece of sponge worked.
Finding right objects, programming the box and placing the microphones feels like physical mixing and mastering. The motors produce short pulses or play melodies, while the resonator objects add or emphasise various harmonics. There are no loudspeakers or microphones inside the box. The acoustic performance is picked up by two microphones that you also see in the frame - Neumann TLM103 and Sennheiser MKH416.
