I remember asking my Japanese friend who was doing Japanese Literature at the time about a Japanese classics recommendation, and she insisted that I read one author (Natsume Soseki). But I forgot to keep a note of the name and over time I have forgotten what the name was. I could not go back to the conversation because it was deleted and felt ashamed to ask my friend again because I thought it would've seemed as if I was neglectful (I was only being overdramatic though, she would not mind). I only remember fragments of the name. Now I remember. Finally!! Because of your video. It was Natsume Soseki. Thank you for uploading!! I love Japanese classics.

I have lived my entire life in Japan, but I was never into reading before until I started reading books in English. When I read Kokoro, (I tried reading it in Japanese but the old writing style was a little too difficult for me as a teenager) I was so intrigued because I had never read a book that was more Japanese than this. It captured the environment of my life here so it was emotionally gripping for me. I had a hard time reading the last ten pages since I felt something that I cannot describe.

I loved this entire video. The history lesson and the excerpt from one of Soseki’s lectures brought a great layer to the video. I read the novel for a class with Japanese students while I was in Japan. As a 21st Century westerner, it was really difficult to get past the way women are viewed in the novel. However, I loved how full of life the narrator is. One of the ladies in my class who studied Japanese Classics made a theory that Sensei’s wife was actually manipulating the plot! I wish I still had her paper because it blew my mind!

I'm so glad I found your chanel. You've probably heard this a ton but your voice and accent is so soothing and nice to listen to. For the book, I loved it. I didn't know that it was popular (and the best selling novel in Japan) since I just came across it at the back of my university library. You're insights are really great and informative as well (the economic background especially). I agree with how "romantic" the relationship seemed at first with sensei and the narrator lol I almost thought it was BL.

I think the loneliness that sensei describes becomes clear in the second part. There's this issue between family piety and individualism where even his familial duties conflict with his families desire for him to be successful which also conflicts with his desire to simply figure things out for himself. This conflict confines the narrator when he's with his parents which makes him miss sensei. He has no one to be honest with.

Thank you for such an enjoyable video! Kokoro is one of my favourite Japanese classics and I was intrigued to hear you recite portions of the translated text as I read it in Japanese and always wondered how it reads in English. I think this book really expresses the Japanese psyche well, which of course still exists as the undercurrent to modern-day Japanese society. I always recommend this book to anyone who asks about Japanese literature or culture 😊

Love japanese authors, but usually I read the modern ones like Murakami, Hiromi Kawakami, Banana Yoshimoto and Sayaka Murata. Oh and I also read lots of mangas. Everytime I think about reading some jp classics they seem to be about older man lusting after young girls or married people having affairs, so I never get to them. But I hope to try I am a cat soon. Great video (and lovely outfit)

Wow, I can’t believe it took me this long to discover this channel! Your review is so interesting, combined with historical context is like watching a modern documentary. Have you ever read Donald Keene criticisms of Japanese authors? I think you’d like his work

Why thank you very much!! I'm very glad to hear that you enjoyed it :) Oh I have only read some of his translations, but I will make sure to have a look a that -- thank you very much!

This is a very excellent review because of your research and care. So many people who do book reviews on RU-vid just say things like "I liked the book/I didn't like the book." Thank you very much.

❤❤ Interesting review of another unknown (to me) classic book. Congrats on the new shelves. Hopefully you enjoy them and the additional space they will provide.

Some time ago, a friend sent me Kokoro with no explanation. I read it with no research or knowledge, and so I feel my opinion is definitely surface level (as you describe), but I enjoyed this immensely. It was a really compelling and emotional read that drew me in. I found aspects of it heartbreaking and definitely saw the pull between different cultures. I really want to read more, so I definitely need to pick up another Soseki. I’m eager to find out more writers like Soseki though! Need to research and expand my view. Thank you so much for this video! So informative and interesting. Finally great to hear someone else talking about this.

this was great! so happy to find a reviewer who does classics written in languages other than English. Akutagawa is one of my favourites so if you haven't already I hope you get a chance to check him out =]

I'm very happy to hear that -- thank you very much!! :) And yeah I've actually read a chunk of Rashoumon and 17 other stories, really enjoyed it! At the moment In a Bamboo Grove is my favourite story :D

@@TheArtisanGeek yay! I think my favourite was Diary of a Stupid Man, but In a Bamboo Grove is fantastic - have you seen the Kurosawa film?
