Kolb Aircraft
One of the most storied names in all of light aviation is Kolb Aircraft, going back to the days of Homer Kolb and his simple, affordable, well-flying aircraft kits. Several thousand are flying.
Homer was a very early entrant to this field, so much so that his first ultralight aircraft came before FAA created the category.
After a couple changes of ownership after Homer retired, the venerable enterprise is now run by the very likable Bryan Melborn, who has carried the Kolb banner in a way Home would have loved. In fact, the aircraft have never looked better.
Your choices among Kolb are many, starting with the FireFly (see flag-paint job example above). This aircraft can meet Part 103 even with an adequately powerful engine plus full three-axis controls and spirited performance. You can even get it on floats and still make Part 103, when no pilot license is needed, no medical is needed, and no FAA N-numbers (registration) are needed - a grand thing! A Firefly can be delivered fully ready-to-fly right from the factory, and they love doing so.
If you need more power you can move up to the experimental Firestar. And if that design interests you but you want a second seat, Firestar II SS will do the job nicely in a side-by-side seating arrangement. It's still very economical. If you want even more room, even more power, the top of the Kolb line is Kolb Mark III Xtra (right image).
Floats are possible on any of these models and all feature Kolb folding wings, that is, wings that fold in literally minutes by a single person. That can save you hangar cost or allow easier trailer transport.
Worried About Flying a Taildragger?
Many pilots have discovered that Kolb taildraggers are some of the easiest-to-fly aircraft on the market, tail wheel or not. This is partly as the "deck angle" is shallow, that is, the nose does not sit high compared to the tail. This makes the tailwheel operation vastly easier and more docile for new taildragger pilots. However, if you're still concerned you can get Firestar with a nosewheel and a tailwheel. This will let you fly in tricycle gear mode but you can experiment with tailwheel operation.
Over the years, we have reviewed every Kolb aircraft the company ever made and you can find most of that on this website (some were flown in the pre-digital era so not all pilot reports are available anymore). Besides being affordable, not too challenging to build, performing well and delivered by some aviation's finest people, Kolb aircraft are simply fun to fly. Need we say more?

I've been wanting one of these bad! I like that you can fold the wings and trailer it. I like the floats option as I live in Great Lakes Michigan!

Dan, Once again, THANK YOU for providing some great info on Affordable Flying........wish you'd asked about the specifics of the Firefly: engine power, prop, inst panel, but I can go to the website for that, but you ask the questions a pilot would ask, rather than someone just putting a website together! Cheers from the Oil Patch in Central WY

Here is a real very Ultralight aircraft. Aircraft which can flight at 200 or 300 km/h are not some Ultralight aircrafts. Thanks for sharing.

Vc max is limited to meet FAR 103 requirements of the US. Can this limitation be removed when flown in other countries such as the UK?
@simpletube31
@simpletube31 3 года назад
As far as I understand, such limitation can be set only with the help of propeller and probably with the help of pilot's common sense.м Replace the propeller with a more efficient one and fly faster. Naturally I can be wrong and the speed is limited by the aerodynamic resistance of the structure.

Kolb needs to update the website. Not much real info there, alot of it is dated. No pics of the firestar SS, prices are for quickits only? Use of aeromomentum 85hp engines for the Mk3? That said, Kolb is still at the top of my short list.

I fly a vintage Firestar. You won't regret going with Kolb. Taildragger is no problem with this plane. Homer Kolb was a genius and I'm living evidence that he designed a stupid proof plane. Check my videos if you wanna see one in action.

With Rotax no longer making engines suitable for FAR 103, what other engines currently in production are out there for FAR 103 compliant Ultralites? I know the Hirth F33 is good on maintaining legal weight, but a bit anemic for some. What about other options in the Hirth line-up? The F23 perhaps? Other engines from anywhere? The HKS 700E is really interesting as a small 4 stroke, but a porker at 121lbs dry weight and not an option for FAR 103.

HKS no longer producing engines. Polini and Radial engine from Verner are the only other two that I can think of.

There's a u-tuber I watch, he's a nice guy and I like his airplane that is similar to this one. I'm not sure what state "or" country he's in though because he never mentions it. Could be Canada. The aircraft is called a Beaver. Its a 2 place. Could you do a review of that one? Or send me a link if you already have. His channel is mmatt. Thanks. CFI JOE COVINO Lake Havasu City. AZ.

That is a Beaver, don’t believe they are still produced but heard roomers they may be again. They were one of the more popular trainingUL in Canada for many years

Find a similar flying two seater. Kolb has the Mark 3, which would give you a very similar experience. If you already know how to fly, getting a Kolb Mark 3 owner to take you up a couple hours should not be too hard. I fly a Kolb Firestar.

They are so swamped with orders that they had to suspend accepting new orders while they work through the backlog. Last word I heard is they will probably start accepting orders again in 2023.

Arcraft with NO pilots license, NO medical, No FAA exam and NO registration! You may also fly over people and cars. But you drone pilots you will need a pilots license and FAA exam and your aircraft registered with the FAA with soon to be remote ID.maximum altitude at 400 feet only...You can not fly over people or cars if you to want fly your 2 or 3 pound aircraft.....Thank You FAA,Your the Greatest .
