Kolob Creek Trip Report | Saturday Sept 30th
Group of 4 ran Kolob (First time for all of us) on September 30th and took 12 hours Car back to Car Via MIA exit. I received report from Washington County Water District of overflow and spillage so we drove up to the reservoir the day before to lay eyes on the flow (See Video). There was what appeared to be 1 cfs (Total Guess) coming through the pipe at the reservoir as well as a little flow at the road (See Pictures). We felt more than comfortable so headed to Zion for the permit which we were issued after the normal questioning. Started the canyon at sun up 7:20am and took just over an hour for the approach. Route finding was not an issue on the approach and we also had GPS to help guide. There was a little flow at the first Rap and the canyon had several swims further down canyon. 3 of us wore 4/3 wetsuits with an extra thermal layer underneath and the 4th had around 7mm of wetsuit as he gets cold easily. We all felt fine temp wise as long as we kept moving. We replaced some webbing along the way but overall the canyon was in good shape. Finished the technical section by noon and headed down canyon. We reached the MIA exit by about 3pm and was easily spotted as the first real area to escape and a cairn on the side of the creek. Route finding was again fairly straight forward to the road and we made it back to the car just after sunset. Amazing canyon but I have to say the MIA is everything that has been described in previous posts/writeup BRUTAL!
