You know this already Dave but worth mentioning that its also important to seal in the kolrosing afterwards with oil to let it seal. Also its worth checking out a guy called 'Adam Hawker' to see some of the finest kolrosing on a spoon you'll ever see. Great video as always my man ~Peace~

Dave, thanks for a great little video and sharing a bit about my Spoon Design Kit. Kolrosing is loads of fun and you've got the right attitude, it doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful or even stunning. I apply a thin coat of oil and allow it to dry before kolrosing, which helps a bit with keeping the pigment from going into the grain elsewhere.

Great video. In fact it is beautiful when you can see the potential of the wood. I really appreciate that the video starts without having to see 30 to 60 seconds of the same introduction every time. Thanks for everything you do for our interests in life.

very cool Dave, and it looks perfect just the way it is because if it was a piece of art you probly would never use it as its intended to be used.

Great stuff! I had no idea Kolrosing was a thing! Interesting to know it might be the pre-cursor to scrimshaw! Good talking to you on Facebook Spoon Carvers as well!

Very cool. I've done scrimshaw, but never kolrosing. Gonna give 'er a try now though!

That's really cool Dave. I like stuff that's imperfect and has defects. Like I told Krik from black owl outdoors, it makes it look like a human (in this case the common man) did it. Thanks for passing on the knowledge. Take care

Dave, I think you're more of an artisan than you take credit for. Keep up the great work. I tried my hand at making a spoon today out of 1x2, it was dry white fir and was far from pretty. Next time I think I'll try pine.

Dave, for some of these small tool handles an old golf ball, with a hole drilled in it, works well.

Very neat! Would it mess up the temper in the tool to heat it up and use it like a wood burning pen?Jason

I have been thinking of a way to decorate the spoons I make. This looks like a good idea. How does the wood or coal ash hold up if some kind of finish like mineral oil is applied? Thanks for the idea.

How about scrimshaw on a beaver tooth or yote canine? Those would be the largest in our area that are legal.

+colton donohoe If you watch his videos carefully you'll notice that he does. But he usually doesn't pack a lip when he's on camera. I think he recently stopped caring what people think, which I applaud. Nothing to be ashamed of.

you are now learning what real "fine carving" skills are all about. feather sticks are not fine tasks. its a gross motor skill on a basic wood working level. what you did in thi svideo is what i call fine carving tasks. well done boss.
