How does a Komodo Kamado grill's design and engineering result in dramatically better grilling and better-tasting food?
How can one basket of charcoal at 235ºf burn for 168 hours in a Komodo Kamado?
Why are Komodo Kamado grills considered the finest in the world?
In this video, Dennis Linkletter, owner and creator of Komodo Kamado grills, answers these questions and more!
Starting with the basics of cooking on a Komodo Kamado grill, Dennis talks about Kamado grill setup, the high-end features of Komodo Kamados, how to get smooth, clean-tasting smoke on a KK, how airflow/temperature control on a kamado grill works, charcoal use in a kamado grill, cleaning your kamado grill, and even a little about the history of kamado grills.
This video is essential for Komodo Kamado grill owners or if you’re considering purchasing a KK!
Thanks for watching!

I have two different-sized Komodo Kamados which are used several times a week, year round, in the Midwest United States. They are excellent grills / smokers with terrific fit and finish and allow great flexibility in a variety of cooking techniques including hot and cold smoking, searing, grilling, baking, and various styles of pizza. I’ve used them for 7 years with no issues. I would buy them again, without question.

So glad I found the Komodo Kamado some 8 years ago. Having been burned by some guy in California selling Komodo’s which literally fell apart in the Midwest’s weather, I learned my lesson. Your grill is like the Sherman Tanks of grills. I have been smoking & grilling ever since I bought my Komodo Kamado. Thanks Dennis.

Thanks! We have had ours since 2016 and learned something new. Being in Canada, we appreciate the story cooking in snow. We have a picture of a cook with an extreme cold warning (-44ish Celcius) and no issues with the cook. We host the annual Christmas dinners with the meat always done on the KK regardless of the temperature outside (smoked cheeses and BBQ sauce made with yellow birch maple syrup are our gifts). We ordered a pallet of CocoChar years ago and installed a fire alarm system in the garage. It there was a fire, it would burn for a very long time with the amount of charcoal. Our backyard sauna is also matched to our KK tile color. We love our backyard oasis and I 1000% appreciate my husband doing the cooks.

Awesome Video. Never Never be concerned about the quality of these KK’s. I had the unfortunate experience of dropping my 42 inch KK about a month ago. It was dropped on the property of a storage unit and was blocking the road. The lid was crack in the fall. So i knew my grill was basically gone. I grabbed a 50 lb sledgehammer and went to town on the base. 30 min later, out breath, I called Dennis and explained my situation. He assured me that beating on the base would get me nowhere. The base of these thing are incredible. I finally was able to get the grill moved . It was a very very sad day. A Replacement is in the works. It’s an amazing grill

I purchased my Dark Autumn Nebula KK23 Gen 2.2 (S/N OU29) in January 2011. Perfect performance, with zero issues after well over 1,000+ cooks! I use a grate scraping tool after each cook. I use the standard cover and store the Teak side tables when not in use. I quickly wipe-down the exterior tiles when needed. The lid seal is still the original with zero leaks! The flat bottom lip makes ash removal a 30-second effort (using a long flat-bladed ash removal tool and flat sided bucket). Looking back, this purchase has been one of the most satisfying (i.e., it has exceeded all expectations). It is so easy to use and produces expected results without fail. Even for the longest low-and-slow cooks, there is no real need for anything else (no electronic temp control devices required to maintain stable temps). Too easy!

Thanks Richard, great video. I've been cooking on my 23" KK for fifteen years. Still looks like new. What Rich says about KK is 100% accurate. I set my top vent for 230 degrees, put four pork shoulders on at 5pm and pull them off about 14 hours later. Once set the KK holds that temp with out moving unless I adjust the top cap. Cooks liked a dream. The smoker all my friends would like.

I have the 32" Big Bad and the number 1 feature, to me, is the fact that it cooks BBQ with flavor that rivals an offset wood smoker. I've owned other brands...the green and the red...the quality of the flavor of this smoker far surpasses anything I've cooked on. If you want top quality, impeccable customer service, and delicious grilled or smoked foods, bite the bullet and purchase this smoker.

Thanks for the video! I love my Komodo Kamado!!! I just adjusted my lid spring, as it had loosened over time. I have had my grill for several years. Will that spring wear out at some point? It is a bit rusty, but not too bad.
@KomodoKamadoGrills
@KomodoKamadoGrills 10 месяцев назад
Thanks Robert.. Yes the springs can settle. Easy to adjust the tension at the bottom of the hinge. High Carbon steel rusts from even looking at it wrong. You can always soak it in molasses to remove the rust and spray it in silver Rustoleum. The new springs seem to finally be rust-free.. really challenging to prevent rust in the very inside bottom of the spring..

Great video Dennis. My 32BB has just arrived in Aussie and will be delivered to its new home in October. I am a details guy and feel this video is somewhat overdue as it would have been very helpful during the purchaing process. I sort of relied on Rum & Cook and the KK forum to collect all the pre-purchase info I needed. The KK website is not very helpful. It is very powerful that Dennis the company founder/inventor is doing these videos personally. Also on the upside there is plenty of good material you can cover for KK video content and it sounds like you have plans! Lastly I would suggest to make them a bit shorter, say 15 minutes max, have a hot cooking KK where appropriate, and go into further detail on the subject matter. Some suggestions: - Full KK range and size comparisons - Tile/stone options - Teak side tables and accessories - Covers - Basket splitter - Ordering a KK - factory direct purchasing - Uncrating & assembling a KK - Burn in (if that is still required) - Charcoal & lighting - Temp contol - manual - Temp control - auto/fan/adaptors - Pans & racks - Rotisserie & rot. splitter - Cold smoker

After almost 15 years my Komodo Kamado works as well as the day I got it. Actually it works even better since I've learned a few things about grilling and smoking since then...

To steal a quote from an Aussie BBQer, "If left alone on an island and having only one choice for a BBQ, a KK would be the choice to do it all." So that about settles it I guess, tiles do cook better.

Fantastic video. I was looking into Komodo Komado hard about four years ago, ended up settling for the SnS Kamado since it's designed around the Slow N Sear. I'd love to own one of these someday, but the price point and the weight means other stuff has to come first, like getting the deck rebuilt etc. I don't know if you have one, but I have a Meater Block I use a lot when I don't need to monitor the grate level temperature, as it's convenient not having to fiddle with my Fireboard's wired probes. I am wondering with the KK's thickness if the Meater probe would be able to communicate with the Meater Block.

Thanks for the kudos.. now you know that KK grills have this same two-zone feature plus much more. I'd say 30% of our sales are from bucket lists.. We're ready whenever you are. Meater probe works fine,

Loved this video! Any recommendations on how to keep the grill clean? Is it good to use soap or some other type of cleaner? Also would love to see instructions on how to adjust the hinge in the back. I just bought mine and a few tiles are busting off the back side. Not familiar enough with it to diagnose the problem
@KomodoKamadoGrills
@KomodoKamadoGrills 9 месяцев назад
Thank you.. ZEP fast 505 degreaser with one of those white magic foam pads. Hinge adjustment on the list. But basically remove the hinge cover and turn the ball to the bottom of the spring one or two turn maximum and then try it.. Be careful not to over tighten you can destroy the hinge. Send me photographs of the tiles it's usually caused from water and repetitive freestyle cycles..

Great Video Dennis that divider your showing, I've seen another version that the wall plate is place in lower bar of grate and does not use the rods. I didn't see 1/2 grate or heat deflectors, on the website it's hard to tell what all is included, I've just watched the different unboxings. I seen one video on 42" there are long teak boards that are for carrying lid. I see you have rotiserie firebox divider what do those run. Fantastic cooker. I was hoping Rum & Cook would have kept doing cooks on his, he was the last current influencer with regular content.

Heylo John, the new sliding splitter fence design was borrowed from the 42" splitter. There is a 1/3 warming grate available in the accessories. Not essential enough to have in the base package. Heat Deflectors I used to make and supply them because people coming from the glazed-pot Kamado world think they're very important. The glazed-pot Kamados lose heat through their walls and having more thermal mass inside the grill helps reduce temperature drops when the ambient temperature changes. Because KK's are so well insulated, this is not a factor. That being said I have not used the heat deflector in one of my grills for probably 15 years. I'm confident that using foil to create your indirect area then putting your drip pan on top of the foil on the lowest grate gives you a much better performance.. i.e. less airflow, less evaporation, and more retained moisture in your meat. komodokamadoforum.com/topic/10026-heat-deflectors-in-the-kk/?tab=comments#comment-121321 Rum and Cook... I have had my KK's for awhile I never knew where to put the Top Vent to get the right temperature. What about the lover Vent ? What would be the setting for that or would I use the Dial with the Holes ? Thanks !
@KomodoKamadoGrills
@KomodoKamadoGrills 10 месяцев назад
Hello Gary, and because of the forced airflow through the charcoal basket, the damper top controls temps much more than other charcoal grills. as far as the lower drafts.. You can pull a lot of air through a small hole with vacuum and with no vacuum, you can use a larger hole and no air will come in.. If it's not leaving the damper top it's not coming in the front draft door.. My hypothesis is more than 95% of temperature control can be the damper top.. But if you want/need higher temps don't restrict the airflow below.

Very good video, and me being a Tool and Die Maker the quality and engineering, and thoughtfulness of the operation of the Komodo is so appreciated. I guess this is the only true design to me of a Kamado style cooker . After cooking on Big Green Egg for the past 15 years, and I own a Mini Max, Large,XL, And the newest one XXL. One would ask why four , but we do some catering and fundraising, church, and family events and it’s just hard when you’re cooking 10 pork buts, briskets, ribs and so on. I have looking at your 42” for a while. Is there any where in the USA that you can check them out or see in person? But would definitely love to see more videos of lighting and operation. Briskets, rotisserie chickens, steaks. The way you designed the Komodo Kamado eliminates all the problems we all have with the Big Green Eggs.

I have had the Lil' ilsa? since soon after it came out and it is still a wonderful item. My only problem is size. It seems that you dealt with this first with a differently shaped lid which makes it possible to smoke a small sized turkey. Is it possible to put a differently shaped lid on this little beaudy? My only problem is that my wonderful wife is not interested in my getting a larger size. Oh well, I serve fewer people than I used to. Thanks for the many years you have made it possible for me to do at least some of the cooking. btw: perhaps the most wonderful thing to cook is fresh sweet corn right in the husk after soaking them for a few minutes.

Thanks for the kudos.. I'm sorry the new lid was made for the tabletop base and won't fit the standing Isla. Agree on the corn.. we soak ours in seawater for a few hours when possible or adding sea salt to water works too..
