Accurate skin tones save a huge amount of time in post production and potentially allow for more creative interpretation of a scene during coloring since there is some latitude in capturing the maximum range of skin tone data. Alternatively, if a camera body struggles with capturing (and not ruining) skin tones (e.g. exaggerating red splotches on skin, making people look like monotone peaches because the camera doesn’t know what to do with the complexity of skin tones) this causes the colorist to center coloration around correcting the skin color problems that the camera is literally creating out of thin air, thus preventing creative interpretation of a scene. How “fun” a camera is to use (when working which is definitely work) drops significantly when a DP thinks about the lighting in terms of not causing skin tone post production problems instead of being allowed the creative freedom of interpreting the lighting of a scene for how to best tell the story. The more transparent a camera body can make my shooting process, allowing me to tell a story instead of wrestling with color problems in post caused by a camera body and not by the lighting, the more interested I am in that camera body. Thank you for sharing this thoughtful review. (Part of me wishes you had at least one more person with you on the mountain when hiking for safety as two people are better equipped to help an injured person with lifting or dragging or one person staying with the injured party and the other going for help if necessary but perhaps you locations weren’t as remote as they appear on camera.) Great footage and thank you also for mentioning the post production stabilization features of the Komodo-X offers as I was unaware of the X’s ability to capture valuable camera movement data. Unwanted camera movement is such a challenge when shooting for me that it is sometimes the primary factor in my camera body selection. Audiences don’t always notice dynamic range, depth of field, lens characteristics etc. but they absolutely notice camera shake and undesirable camera shake seriously interferes with the ability of an audience to engage fully with non-reality TV based video content. Thank you for your hard work. 👍🧗
@team2films
@team2films 9 месяцев назад
So true. That's a great point that accurate skin tones free you up to spend more of your time and energy on the other creative parts of the image. Don't worry... it was pretty safe where we were and it was a well travelled route. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

@@Michael_Odelberth It really is a great camera. It was a loaner, so it's not in our possession anymore, but if you have specific questions please ask. We've got a video coming out soon on the Kinefinity Mavo Mk II. That's a super interesting camera to consider. A Red KX plus accessories will cost about 15k. A Kinefinity Mavo Mk II will cost you about 5-7k (depending on whether you go s35 or FF). Compared to the KX it's got some advantages and disadvantages. You might consider it an inferior camera, but at less than half the cost those compromises might be VERY acceptable.

@@team2films Okey, just the overall feeling of the Komdo X, how is to work with, is it light on your body etc. I have the RED Raven today, so will probably stay inside the RED Ecosystem, to have 2 cameras with the RED codec. Even though the Kinefinity is cheaper I think the Komdo is worth it.

thanks for the video.. when you say that with those v-mount batteries you were shooting 2 days conservatively: how often did you switch off the KX during the day and how did you implement the bootup time into shooting so run&gun?
@team2films
@team2films 5 месяцев назад
Good question. I'm trying to remember now! I think each battery (140Wh) gave about 2+ hours of runtime with the 7" screen on. I'd turn the camera on and off. If I was shooting a Timelapse I'd turn the screen off. The battery lasts a lot longer without the 7" monitor. If I see an opportunity to shoot something I can turn the camera on without looking thanks to its toggle power button. Then it'll take me 30 seconds to get myself into a position where I am ready to shoot. An instant boot would be preferable, but with the right strategy it was rarely an issue. Because the batteries have USB C they are easy to top up whenever a mobile phone charging station presents itself. Does that help?
@hannestell
@hannestell 5 месяцев назад
@@team2films yeah totally. I really see it not being an issue at least not when you consciously adapt your workflow to increase bootup times and depending on the size production carrying the extra juice won’t be an issue. Thanks a bunch!

@@team2films I know you’re a cinematographer, but what camera do you use for photography or what would you recommend?
@team2films
@team2films 19 дней назад
@@jamescook5931 Heya James Most of my photography is on film currently. I really like the look of Fuji's GFX medium format cameras. I really like what Fuji has been doing with their other stills cameras too. Photograph is such a mature market now, so you can pretty much buy any FF mirrorless camera and you're going to get amazing pictures. I'm more familiar with Canon's line up so that would be their R series. You don't have to spend major dollar! Remember, if budget is limited, put your money in lenses not in bodies. Currently, my main digital photography camera is a Canon 6D! It's old, but like I said, digital stills cameras are really really mature. The biggest improvements have been in things like auto focus, resolution and video features... Beyond those things a 10+ year old camera like the 6D will still hold it's own really well.

@B1TN3RD
@B1TN3RD 2 месяца назад
Very nice work! But one comment: From a technical perspective of the RED ISO logic you won't use a low ISO (like ISO 400 on the mountains as you shown in your clip) on such a sunny day, lets say a scene with lots of highlights. You'd then rather work with ISO 1000 or above, since ISO in RED cameras will shift the middle gray either upper or lower within the tonal range. That means a higher ISO results in highlight preservation and vice versa a lower ISO means better shadow qualities. Even when shooting in R3D RAW, the image quality will be baked in depending on the ISO setting. So setting the correct ISO at the set will give you a better quality then setting the correct ISO setting in post. Just in case you didn't know or was there a different reason to use ISO 400?
@team2films
@team2films 2 месяца назад
Heya, thanks so much for watching! I'm not sure I get what you are saying. Please let me know if I have misunderstood anything,. Thoughts below. Changing the ISO on the camera does not affect the image that is recorded. Therefore there is no quality loss when changing the ISO in post. A camera can only produce a finite amount of dynamic range. So normal cameras are just applying gain or attenuation to the camera signal based on the ISO settings. That practice is more relevant for cameras that use low bit-depth codecs, but Red uses a comparably large 16-bit linear space, hence their decision not to perform those calculations camera. On a a Red, so simply affects monitoring. That's all. So there's nothing wrong with shooting bright scenes at 400 ISO? Additionally, I'm practicing ETTR so I'm not exposing specifically for ISO 400. The histograms on the monitor ignore the cameras iso, they are reading straight from the sensor. 400 is just a comfortable setting for viewing. I'm not sure how Red's dual-native ISO works. I'm not sure if it bumps up to a different base when you hit a certain ISO. Either way, I can't imagine a scenario where it would be more practical to shoot bright exteriors at the high base. Looking forward to hearing your response. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.
@B1TN3RD
@B1TN3RD 2 месяца назад
@@team2films Hey, thanks for you reply, I assume it would be hard to explain it through the chat. I'd recommend you to watch following technical guide for RED cameras, in my opionion this is the best one on RU-vid, so you don't need to read the official technical guide on the red website, since these videos sum it up pretty well. This is part two only focusing on ISO, but I also recommend to watch part one of this guide: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X7XmmM2OrHY.html
@team2films
@team2films 2 месяца назад
@@B1TN3RD Thanks so much for the link. He refers to red's documentation, here's some quotes from Red. 'Ultimately though, a camera sensor sees the same light regardless of ISO choice. One therefore shouldn't have to be restricted to a particular ISO in advance.' 'With RED cameras, the best way to shift the balance between noise and clipping protection is with the ISO setting. Although ISO doesn't actually change the raw image data, it does change how the image is displayed, because it shifts which portions of the scene are mapped to middle gray.' Having the ISO set to 400 has no impact what-so-ever on the image that is recorded. Changing the ISO in post does not have any negative effect on the image either. Underexposing at 400 by a stop is the same as exposing properly at 800. ISO only affects monitoring. As long as you're exposing within the traffic lights, you're good! Does that help or have I misunderstood what you are talking about?
@B1TN3RD
@B1TN3RD 2 месяца назад
@@team2films Hey man, thank you for the constructive explanation by citing the RED technical guide, I also once saw this video as well, in which the creator states that the ISO setting during the filming will also affect noise level in the shot, even though it won't affect the RAW image: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eNBHvdO7a3Q.htmlsi=Cg5skpR1Smtfh9B7&t=1095 @ 18:15mins. Maybe I am still misinterpreting something, so correct me if I am wrong. But it is correct to select a high ISO value (e.g. 1250) for a sunny day, even in post production, right? So middle gray would be shifted towards the shadows and you' d have more tonal steps to preserve the highlights.
