Komoot phone app for bike navigation 

You don’t need 4G or any form of internet connection to use Komoot when out on a ride.. So long as you’ve downloaded the region onto the device you are using and have location services turned ON. Its GPS which does the tracking/locations and not tinternet connection..

Komoot pre-planned routes are great. I love the community aspect with planned routes by other people. I found some really cool paths thanks to it.

I (still) don't have a Garmin or Wahoo or something alike, and I only carry my phone with the komoot-app. I do make sure my phone has the route and has the area unlocked. I always return home after a ride. All of this has worked perfectly for me for rides surely till 80km (this method should still work easily till 100km). Yes the battery drains with the screen always on (even with some savings on), up to say 35%. I do know the area, the villages and several roads from memory, so I have a vague idea where I should be (on well-known terrain). But yes, no backup plan. Sometimes on the komoot map it only shows the road, no side street, where I know from memory there should be one. Maybe a no-signal thing, unsure. In any case, I'm super happy planning the route on my big PC screen and then take the phone and just ride it.

I love Komoot and it's easy way of planning a trip. I have the app on my phone but as it's an iPhone it often runs low on battery and I have no confidence in being able to use it on a longer trip. After getting lost recently on a cycle route where the signs just ran out when my phone battery was nearly dead, I decided to get a Garmin Edge 530 and have spent time linking it to Komoot. I think both will be the solution as you suggest Simon (and I love my Quadlock mount).

Hi, use and like Komoot. I use an old phone with a smaller display which I can sync with my current phone to obtain the route. I can use this to navigate in a cheap phone holder and add photos as I go along. If I want to make an alteration to the route, I can get my main phone out and consult any app, Google maps, Komoot, mapme, Osm etc use that to guide while still traking on the small phone. That way I end up with an uninterrupted record of the day with photos!

Will point this out for folks, as it caught me out when I first started using Komoot.................. Sending a route to my Wahoo. To move a route from Komoot to a head unit: You need to have bought the upgrade from Komoot to store routes/maps offline. The world package lets you ride anywhere, unless you just ride close to home this is the one you need IMO. HTH someone as it took me a while to work out what was going on and why I could not transfer routes.

I have used a few different cycling apps over the years. Google Maps, Samsung Health & MapMyRide to name a few. Also use the Quadlock system for my phone mount. But I never really had to worry about lack of power for my phone as I used the same QuadLock system to mount a Solar Battery Bank either to my seat post or to my dandle bars with a cable ziptied to my frame running along side my gear & break cables. I could then remove the battery and attach it and my phone to the QuadLock belt and arm strap mounts.

I've recently just started leaving the Garmin at home and just use Komoot on the phone while I ride. As you say, linking Komoot to the Garmin is tedious and kind of redundant, and the graphics on my phone are far better than what I have on the head unit. It's just one less thing I need to take with me and worry about charging. I've ridden all over my home in Washington State in the US as well as in British Columbia, and so far I've not faced a situation where I couldn't navigate at all because of a poor mobile connection. For reasons I do not quite understand, Komoot seems to work OK if there is any kind of signal; even when I couldn't even make a call on Vancouver Island, Komoot was still able to tell me where I was. If I were a marketing executive at Garmin, I'd be kind of worried. Slightly off-topic observation: I've noticed that Komoot's route suggestions are not always optimal and sometimes downright misleading or even dangerous, for example claiming that a busy stretch of two-lane highway with no shoulder is actually part of a bike trail network. Have you ever noticed this?

I was on that lovely road by Loch Linnhe on September 6th having just done the final part of the West Highland Way from Kinlochleven on the gravel bike. A problem I have with Kamoot is it sometimes tells me I've finished a route I planned when I know I haven't. This happened to me the previous day whilst riding the loop round Loch Leven, as I knew the area I ignored it and it eventually found the route again.

Excellent video, well produced . I have been playing around a little with Komoot having always used ride with GPS. doing more solo hiking now I think Komoot is an interesting tool and wanted to see some more of the features, so thanks. ride with GPS I find brilliant for suckle route planning

There's no substitition for using OS maps to plan detailed trips . Os shows all the legal bridleways and non legal footpaths for a bike , as well as forestry tracks . Recently downloaded NDW cycling route using komoot . Its a lot of road , have noticed checking the route with an OS map there is a ton of improvements to be made on the route using legal more pleasant bridle routes . There's also forestry tracks on OS as well . So as a guide I now have komoot on a wahoo bolt . And on my phone I use Outdoor Active (viewranger ) for OS maps , as well as komoot on phones as back up. I used to take two mobile phones but decided a gps device is better than using your main mobile phone all the time. I bought a second hand mobile phone to use on previous trips which worked well as that phones expendable and used a different sim card company on it for extra mobile redundancy 👍🙂

Strava suggested routes have gotten really good... They work well on the phone app... Subscriber only feature I think. I find them a quicker solution for a ride in a new area rather than planning in more detail on a computer.

I create route on my phone using Kamoot. I save route as GPX and then open it using Garmin Connect as phone gives option for this. I save route in connect and then export it to Garmin device. I then use Garmin head unit for navigation but can use Kamoot on the phone if I need to change anything or need a back up. Obviously you can create on PC using Komoot then open Komoot on your phone then carry on with above process. Cheers

I had to use my phone today, when I got lost, after taking detours, because of road closures due to a road race, and all the reroutes garmin gave all ended at road closures, but just used garmin maps, because only had about 8 miles before I got to areas I knew. Might give Komoot a try next time,

Hi. Do you use bone conduction headphones? They are great for cycling. You can hear you navigation, calls, music and to be able to hear the surrounding sound as well, so you are safe. They stop the wind going to the ears because of their position and they are waterproof. I will be grateful to hear your opinion. Thanks

HI Simon - my navigation in the UK is sorted, but looking further afield (Europe etc) I'll need to look at different software. I know you are a big fan of Komoot. HAve you spent any tiime trying "Ride With GPS" - I'd be interested to hear your thoughts ... my initial thoughts is that RWGPS is a bit more "substantial" regards its mapping styles, routing options etc - but I could be wrong ;-)) Steve

A recent Radio 4 programme was suggesting that there is evidence that human ability to navigate is diminishing due to use of electronic devices. A paper map is more tuned in to our mental picture of the world. It's also a lot cheaper and doesn't run out of battery. No worries about running out of power on multi- day trips.

Ride with GPS for me and synch routes to my Wahoo. The komoot route planner is appalling, however in its favour it does have user POIs (highlights as kommoot call them) and I sometimes look at those when plotting my route on RWGPS

Hi Simon, All in my iPhone with a battery pack as backup works fine for me. AND I would like to see the route instructions pop up on my Lock Screen so I know when to continue or unlock the phone for a look at the route. Can you help me (with an instruction video)?

I do not have a GPS computer but ride locally and know the roads. I use my current phone to record on Strava. I have considered using my last phone to navigate or have an offline route to check options at times. The cost of an advanced GPS computer seems too high for the amount I need it. Does this make any sense or should I just join the 21st century and get the best GPS computer I can afford?

Will navigation by voice work on JBL GO 3? Can play music at the same time?

To bad my old edge-200 can't do that' I have to manually upload the files to it by hooking it up to my computer.. Ah well, eventually I'll get a new one.

Love Komoot! But do folk use the Premium version of it and, if so, why?

You mentioned head unit quite a lot. Never heard of one. What is it?

It’s ok on phone ….but so many places when you do need it, no signal or slow connection . I need a head unit really

Don't ALYWAYS have phone signal , paper map as backup.

Not keen on using a phone as a navigation device. Let’s keep the phone for phone calls and route planning. I do use a reserve battery but when cycling the phone is on airplane mode for the most part. Obviously if you have a new phone or new battery built in it will last longer but GPS takes battery up a fair bit.

I really don't like the routes komoot plots/chooses. I much prefer to make my own decisions, using OS mapping in the UK. Dynamic Watch is brilliant: OS mapping all the way down to 1:25k, easy editing, a clear filing system, wireless transfer to Garmin Edge....all for about $29 (about £25) for life!

You can't actually navigate with this app unless you pay for it, no free functionality with komoot.
