I learned the hard way that tongue size is important. I tried going by weight like the company suggests and my dog couldn't get her tongue in. Then I sized up and she almost got her tongue stuck. I sized up again and she couldn't even reach halfway. So it turns out my medium dog with a freakishly large tongue needed the XL. Her jaw doesn't fit inside thank goodness. Also, it's odd that Kong doesn't include a single sighthound in the size chart. Not even greyhounds.

Youa re the first person tha has given a good in-depth explanation of the right sizes associated to a dog's breed + age. We've are picking up our new family member this weekend (Female Lab...she'll be 8 weeks old on pickup day) and I've been looking everyone on a good explanation of what size to get. I thought medium but wasn't sure but now I'm feeling more confident in that after your video. I'd like to have a few onhand and ready to go before she gets home. Thanks so much!

This is absolutely the most helpful ever! I’ve used the red large for decades with my lab. His entire 15 years! Made mistakes with puppy and smaller ones for adopted puppies and a rescue chihuahua so gave up on them. Chews up red/ate the puppy size /ignored the black large. Wrong size wrong material wrong fillings! But… Summer and boredom. So I just learned for the first time ever that I should be filling and freezing them and it’s a game changer but I obviously need more than one. And now I know which size and how to use them. I feel like I cheated my ice loving lab out of a much deserved activity. Thank you for this

Cavapoo around 10 lbs. is on the upper size for the small Kong. Small is supposed to be up to 10 pounds. Classic red kong is the correct Kong. Small or medium depends if you think your dog can reach to the bottom of the medium size Kong. Length of your dogs muzzle will determine that. Joyce

Hi Guys, just to explain. When I talked about the Labradoodle and Goldendoodle, I was thinking of the full size Labradoodle and Goldendoodle. if your puppy is a medium size or small Goldendoodle or Labradoodle, the size of the Kong would be small or medium. Thank you. Joyce

Is your puppy chewing the top of the puppy kong. That would determine if you bypass the classic Kong. If puppy licks the puppy Kong with no chewing on the Kong, not getting pieces off the Kong, then I would try the Large Classic before going to extreme. The extreme is so tuff and your puppy is still teething. Hope this helps. Let me know how you are doing. Thank you.

What does she weigh. I would look at the length of her mouth and the width. 3 month old Parsons Terrier weight between 6-8 lbs. could be small puppy Kong. As she gets older over 10-12 - 15 lbs. she would need a medium Kong. Hope this helps. Thank you . Joyce

male or female? size can vary in your breed. probably a large. but it depends on the size of the muzzle and the head. joyce

hi Maria, The Red Classic Small Kong should be fine for your dog. Because your dog is a rescue, he may not have had regular dental care. i would move to the senior kong when your dog has problem with losing teeth or dental disease. Hope this helps. Joyce

This was really helpful. I just adopted a pitbull mix that is an older puppy and is a massive chewer. I went right for the black large kong. It keeps her busy for about 15 minutes and she can get everything out, so I just ordered a black xl to see how that goes. Any other kong would be chewed to shreds immediately.

@@shay4101 The xl lasts a bit longer and holds more because of the bigger opening. I find it easier to clean as well. I use the large for when I'm leaving for work etc, and the xl when I am at home and need to keep my pittie busy for a little bit.

Samoyed puppy between 3- 4 months probably the medium puppy Kong. Over 4 months probably the large red or black kong depending on how strong the chewer. hope this helps.

I would put the extreme away and start with the Puppy medium . Only when the puppy started to chew the rubber would I switch to the extreme. You may be able to skip the red classic and move straight to the extreme. Let me know about your puppy. Thank you. Joyce

Hello, I’m getting an 8 week old biewer terrier puppy, is a small puppy kong right choice for now? and when should I size up or switch to the classic or a senior kong?

Yes, I would think a small puppy kong would be the right size for a few weeks then switch to medium puppy kong. After that to classic medium. If your puppy starts to chew the top of puppy kong, switch to classic medium earlier . I would not use the senior kong until my dog is an older adult. Years from now. The ultra black kong you may need to use if your adult or older puppy starts to chew the top of the red classic kong. It depends on the size of your puppy if you ever switch to a large kong . I would think the medium would be large enough for a biewer terrier . Hope this helps . Tell me more about your puppy. Joyce

Hi, The small Kong is ok for a 6 month miniature dachshund puppy. i would think very soon your puppy would be ready for a medium Kong. The small will not hold very much food. your puppy will probably empty the Kong pretty quickly.

Hi, i would use the small Puppy Kong (pink or blue) for your puppy. Watch to see if your puppy starts to chew the top of the Kong. If he does chew, switch to the small Classic Kong (red) . hope this helps. When your puppy reaches 10-12 lbs. I would switch to a medium sized Kong. Thank you, Joyce

3month old husky. If he is a real strong chewer, i would probably try the Puppy Large first to give him a larger Kong which would be harder to chew. soon he will need the Red Classic Kong. Thank you, Joyce

Hi Kayla, if the puppy is 9-10 lbs. I would recommend the medium puppy Kong. Under 8-9 lbs. possibly the small, but the shape of the face would decide. If the head is broad at the nose, I would use the medium. Hope this helps/

I heard kong was founded from a guy who started a dong factory,it failed so he kept all the machinery to make the dongs,since they was a flop he changed the molds and started making dog toys called kong.

Hi, they have a purple Kong for senior dogs. I think the Purple small or medium depending on if your dog has a long narrow face or a broad wider face. Narrow face the Small and wider face the Medium size. Hope that makes sense. Thank you, Joyce

Yes, I agree the black extreme Kong. I am not sure he needs the XXL. We want him to reach the bottom of the kong to eat the filling. I would say to look at the XL Black Kong first. Stafford shire bull and Sharpei sounds to me like a medium sized dog with very strong jaws. Hope this helps. Joyce

I have rescue pomeranians... one needed an small and two of them needed a medium. It surprised me as we typically think small dog= small. But even with coats or collars... every company's sizing varies too.

Kong’s are great. Also try Himalayan Chews, Bully sticks with the holder, Nylabone, benebone and Lickimat. Corgi’s were bred to nip and bite cattle as you probably already know. They need lots of hard chew toys. Even raw knuckle bones may help . Corgi may nip your feet when you move. Hi Noelle, i would suggest XXLarge Ultra Black Kong. Also possibly largest raw Knuckle bones you can find. Knuckle bones are softer than Marrow bones so the bone should not be too hard to chip teeth. Which kong did you decide to give your puppy. Has your puppy now gotten bigger so you are thinking of moving to the next size Kong. When small kong is too small, your puppy will give up and not try to get the filling out. Let me know. Thank you Joyce

Hello, 10 kg is about 22 lbs. the medium Kong is up to 35 lbs. with her narrow nose, I think she can stay with the medium puppy Kong for a few more weeks. Hope this helps. What is her favorite filling. Thank you . Joyce

I have a female boxer and the large Kong with the cord is a favorite of hers... She needs a strong toy and the one I got was the red one... sometimes I put some peanut butter in at the top if she needs tot keep busy for half an hour but she's more into throwing it far away than to look for treats on the inside...and we have a very large garden... Kong toys aren't cheap. Thanks for the info.

Which Kong did you choose? Puppy is now larger, have you moved to the next size. Are you still using puppy Kong or have you moved to the red Classic Kong. Are you using the large kong or still using the medium. Whippet nose is long and jaw is narrow to be able to reach the bottom of a large kong, I would think by now. Thank you . What size would you recommend for a 16 lb and 20 lb West Highland White Terrier? They haven't seemed that interested in kongs even without freezing and maybe it's because the size is wrong. So I switched to using bully sticks when I'm going to be gone but they upset their tummy's and are expensive. I'd like to try frozen kongs if I can get them to enjoy them. Thank you.

The size I would use is medium. Pink or blue Puppy if the dog has not finished teething and red Classic if an adult. Keep trying to find something the dogs like to lick before you freeze the kong. Hope this helps . Joyce

14 pounds is right at the edge of the small kong. If your dog has trouble getting the food from the bottom or emptied the kong so quickly, I would try the medium red kong. Let me know which kong works for your dog. Thank you. Joyce

Does a medium sound like a good size for a pair of 10 month chihuahua/dachshund mix. One of them is bigger dachshund leaning (tho I joke that he looks more like a jack russell) and the other is more chihuahua leaning. the small I got them looks like a choking hazard. medium kong is up to 30 lbs. but your Doberman has a longer nose and is growing so quickly. I would buy the Large puppy kong (pink or Blue color) and stir up the bottom if he can't reach all of the food.

Hi, Puppy Kong (pink or blue). The size depends on how big your puppy is and a little on the length of your dog's nose. Measure the small Kong on your dog's face like I did with Nicky, Measure the Medium Kong the same way. The Kong that is the length of your puppy's mouth is the right size to use now. Hi Mimi, how much does your puppy weigh. Cockapoo can be different sizes as adults . I really think the first Kong I would buy is the small puppy Kong. But after that , I would always buy the Medium Puppy Kong until your puppy finishes teething about 6-7 months. Then your puppy would need red Classic medium Kong. If your puppy is from toy poodle and cocker spaniel, then your puppy will be smaller and maybe you will need the small Kong for a few months. Sorry to be so vague. Size and Weight are important. Hi Elia, i would suggest you try the Medium Puppy Kong. A Golden Retriever puppy even at 8 weeks is going to have a broad muzzle and find it difficult to empty the small Kong. In the Medium Kong, you may need to stir up the food on the bottom or put some treats in the bottom to help your puppy reach the filling. if someone gave you a small puppy Kong, you could use it for 2-3 weeks, but I would not buy the small. You will definitely need to move to the medium Puppy Kong around 10-12 weeks. The small is for dogs under 10 lbs. You should be able to use the medium puppy kong until at least 4 months especially because you mention she is a female and should be smaller than a 4 month old male. What is your puppy's favorite filling? how are you using the Kong? I would love to hear from you. Thank you. Joyce

Size should be medium if your dog weighs over 10 lbs. Red Classic or if really strong chewer the black ultra. Also try the bully stick with Bonivet holder to satisfy chewing. St. Bernard puppy, 6 weeks old. Kong's sizing chart says Large Puppy, but I'm not sure if it is a tad too large. She can't get any of it in her mouth, but can eat out of the large end it seems. Should I get a Medium Puppy for now as well?

Yes, at 12lbs, she would need medium Puppy. Watch for her not being able to get the food out of the Kong because her muzzle is too broad or she starts to empty the kong so quickly, then it is time for a large puppy. She is going to be a big girl. Start early with handling exercises using the filled Kong to accept and like to be petted. There are videos to watch on my channel. Let me know how you are doing .
