It's hilarious Disqo thinks his style was more realistic. In reality MMA & UFC hadn't blown up on a mainstream level yet. MMA and UFC completely changed the perception of how people look at pro wrestling. Just facts.

I don’t watch wrestling anymore, but I imagine older fans who still do are (in some cases) like fans of sports teams that perpetually lose. They’re used to the heartbreak, but they remember the good old days and desperately yearn to see something resembling a good matchup, and maybe once in a while they do. And the rest gives them something to complain and commiserate about.

Nick Patrick made a very good point about today’s modern wrestlers. They think, they had a good match if they remembered all their planned moves. There’s two problems with this thinking: 1. They spend too much of their match trying to remember their next move and not paying attention to selling. 2. This is my big problem with all this planning out the entire match, what happens when the fans don’t care? Hogan gets crucified because of his “lack of wrestling skill”. Yet for the majority of his career he had matches with huge crowd reaction and it was all called in the ring

I love how nobody understands numbers. The average wrestling fan is older, because they are creatures of habit. Disco is right. Wrestling is not growing, the numbers seem bigger because the metrics have expanded and the algorithms have improved, but the average trends are trending downward and older. Wrestling's niche is appealing to 18-30 drinking crowds.... That is why the Attitude Era did so well, it wasn't the explicit content specifically, it was the demo they were targeting. It gave college kids a reason to go to a live show and get hammered, and it appealed to high school kids because it seemed edgy to them... and then it appealed to their younger siblings because thats what the older kids were into.... and on the flip side people over 30 would enjoy it because it was adult enough not to be corny, but not so over the top that they couldn't take their teenager to see it. It's counter intuitive to tradition corporate marketing strategies, but it is what makes wrestling "cool." Balding men in their mid 30's with guts and unkempt beards is not "cool" and neither is Disney on ice in a wrestling ring, but those are the core audience in a weird way... and the only way to market to both effectively is to market in between them.

I was a Ruthless Aggression era kid, so personally I think that era was a perfect blend of Attitude Era edginess and great in-ring work. I was fortunate enough to watch one of the finest most talented roster of workers and performers in the history of not only WWE, but the business. I dropped out when my country's one TV network took RAW and Smackdown off the air. Thanks to the internet, (and wrestling podcasts namely, Talk is Jericho and Keepin it 100) I got back into watching wrestling when I was in college. At first I was entralled by the highflying new school style. Overtime I felt myself losing interest again. The matches started to feel soo samey I started to predict em move to move. The obvious cooperation rankled. The poor selling. The terrible looking striking. Wrestlers grabbing holds that looked too loose and not even bother appearing to crank said holds. On and on until I went on RU-vid to watch stuff from my childhood. To see if the overly fake looking work was always the case or was it because I was older and could pick it out better. I was very happy to see that I was not being nostalgic. With all due respect to a number of current talent from this era, many of the current crew just don't cut it.
@Yunglex313

Ever watch Ring of Honor? Generally the most pure wrestling program in the era. Generally just very raw and rough. Yeah it has your flippy guys, some sillier characters, but for most part the most pure wrestling program outside of maybe New Japan Pro Wrestling, which itself has a very raw and realistic feel due to the ideology of Strong Style promoting making the fight look as real as possible.

I somewhat agree with Hart. When three guys are fighting outside of the ring and then they all stop to catch the 4th guy but the 4th guy takes maybe a few extra seconds to get to the top or leap so the guys outside the ring are just stuck waiting. The boys are collectively correct. The fact is, ratings do not tell the story on wrestling or it’s lack of popularity. It’s why Nick Khan says WWE’s competition is “everyone”-you have video games, your phone, Netflix and every other service else competing for the same households in terms of entertainment. Back in the day, when you had the boom of wrestling the entertainment landscape was different. All that said WWE just ensured it’s survival long term with the Endeavor deal. AEW, I predict will get 3 to 4 more years on his current deal and then it will either go under or Tony will get tired of it and off load it to someone. The money train will only last so long. It might even get bought by WWE/Endeavor. If you look at the ratings (which don’t tell the story but in some ways do) as social media impressions AEW has stagnated in terms of viewership or growing new fans. It’s consistently the same numbers growth and the potential for growth is what it is currently. It’s great that AEW has that niche but that’s not going to make sure it stays on television. When your product is what’s presented on TV you have to have compelling stories and characters which WWE even it’s lean years has succeeded in doing (debate that or not now Vince has a boss and even more shareholders to answer to-so if it sucks with him in creative now there will be no choice but to change). I can guarantee if the ratings drop off majorly Vince will step back. I know the narrative surrounding him is strong but he’s a sharper businessman than he’s given credit. AEW needs to course correct like yesterday if it wants to be viewed with value. In media today it’s quality over quantity.

There wouldn't be that much thigh slapping if everybody didn't do 30 Superkicks in every match. I get what Bret means about the guys waiting for someone to jump on them. It happens IN the ring as well as on the outside. A guy is laying in the center of the ring. His opponent climbs to the top turnbuckle. The guy gets up off the mat and waits for the guy to reach the top, turn around, and jump. The guy clearly has enough time to move out of the way, but he just stands there and lets the opponent land on him. It doesn't get any faker than that.
