I've changed my mind about the new Kamado Joe Konnected Joe for the BETTER, but now that we have a bunch of cooks under the belt... would I actually buy a new Konnected Joe? I don't think so, BUT thats not going to stop me from recommending it (to the RIGHT type of person).
We'll cover the 4 reasons that I wouldn't buy one (albeit specific to me and I how like to use my Kamado Joe grills), the secret powers this grill does have, and the perfect customer who SHOULD buy this grill. Kamado Joe Provided this grill at no cost.

I was new to grilling when I bought my first KJ. I bought the iKamand because I was worried about my expertise. The grilling expert at the store, the legendary Abt in Chicagoland, encouraged me to not use the iKamand in the beginning so that I could better learn how to use the grill. He also turned me on to Smoking Dad BBQ. A few years on and the iKamand is still in the box. I'm more confident and think I enjoy grilling more because of this advice. So, I'd encourage anyone new to KJ to start without the controller as odd as that sounds. Oh, and follow this channel.

Nice unbiased take on the Konnected Joe. It definitely has a place in the market even if it's not your preference. It was wise of KJ to allow people to run it manually and might encourage people to "take off the training wheels" of wi-fi as they grow more confident in their skills while still providing peace of mind for things like overnight cooks.

It seems they DC'd the iKamand and left us all holding the bag! I tried to use it for my July 4th cook and found they have removed the app and now it's rendered useless and removed my account. I went round and round with their customer service over emails(Becauser they don't have a phone number to call), that should tell you something! So my last email was it was, this is from them: We would like to assist you with your iKamand issue however, we have recently discontinued technical support for this product and it will no longer function. We apologize that the iKamand has not lived up to standards and is not allowing you to have a successful grilling experience. Thanks again for your continued support of Kamado Joe. We look forward to delivering new ways for you to Serve Up Adventure with future products. Enough said. $250.00 down the drain. My grill is awesome but after spending $3000.00 on a grill and accessories, is this the the kind of customer service you want?? I am not sure about the Green Egg, but i would buy that instead of dealing with these people, the service can't be worse. Steer clear!

Unacceptable. I have asked for a statement but don’t have anything official other than rumour of seeing in fb groups that they are responding to all customer service cases with a credit to the store. Kj doesn’t offer a different controller so if you had a controller and need a controller I am not sure what you’d use this credit for to restore use of your grill the way you want to use it. Hope they get ahead of this more and share something officially

Excellent analogy. I'm 'old school' and have been smoking with wood & coal for years... manually. Several friends have Auto pellet poopers. They have very few failures. Personally its like the way I use my camera. 99% of the time in manual, not automatic. I like doing all the settings and consider it part of the "art".

I believe with teachers like you out there who make this so simple, learning to use a KJ is a very fast and easy process. I’ve been sending my viewers to you for years to learn those KJ 101 lessons and they all rave about how easy it is to learn by watching you. So for me, KJ would have better served the new Griller by giving them a 1 year membership to SDBBQ with a Classic 3 purchase than with this crutch.

I think for a lot of people, they don't care about the BBQ fire related stuff. They just want to cook something easily. For them it's not really a question of Kamado vs offset, but charcoal vs propane. That's why pellet grills are so popular. Some of the charasterics of fire with the ease of propane. That's how I look at things like the Masterbilt or the Konnected. I've been looking at the Masterbilt but this opens another option.

Great video I’m currently contemplating switching my classic two for a connected Joe As a father of two the weekends are getting pretty busy, so is our weeknights, I’m not always home to be able to keep an eye on the barbecue, or to activate a keep warm function when the food is ready. Just not sure if that is worth $2500 Canadian. Also, looking at the master built 560 or 800 just afraid of the winter performances in Canada since we grill year-round

The Cookshack electric smokers are fiberglass insulated, and people smoke often well below zero degrees. You won't get a smoke ring, and poultry needs to be finished in the oven for crispy skin, but 1-3 small (SMALL) chunks of smoking wood, superlow temp ability, and a keep warm function (after temp or time is achieved) makes it great for the busy family!

Just about to take the plunge and get my first Kamado Joe Grill. I like the extra size available on the Big Joe, but I think it is a big lump to have on the patio when not in use, so I'm moving towards the classic size. I have been grilling on charcoal BBQs for many years over the usual direct heat (burgers/steaks/kebabs etc.). I would really like to try the cooking of whole chickens, joints of lamb ribs etc as well. I'm also keen to try hot smoking of trout (I'm a fisherman plenty of trout to smoke). The Konnected Joe really appeals with the automation that it offers. But if the choice of grill is down to Konnected joe or Classic Joe III then what will the III do that the connected won't? What will I be missing out on? It seems that the slo roller, the rotisserie and the doe joe all work on the Konnected joe, all I seem to be missing is 3 tiers instead of 2 on the Konnected?? Will that matter? Will there still be room to cook big joints on the Jotisserie in the connected Jo? Generally we grill for 4 or 6 people, so the classic size will be enough. For those rare occasions where we have more people coming to eat,It seems that in the event that I need more grilling area, then I can use the grill expander to get and extra tier for grilling if required. So that's it. Konnected joe or Classic Joe III? What I be missing out on if I go Konnected Joe instead of Classic Joe III? Your opinions would be most welcome James. Best regards Julian UK

While I totally get that many people need a convenient cooker like this or a pellet grill, I personally think with a little practice a Komodo style cooker works almost as well, even without something like a bbq guru. I love my offset smoker but when I want set and forget cooking I can do a 12 hour smoke on my bge with basically zero babysitting. Once you know how much charcoal to use and where to set your vents it’s so easy. Plus you can do live fire cooking from 250-800 plus degrees.

Hey there - I just bought a connected Joe and have a few issues. I gave up on putting the screws in under the stand - they wouldn’t align and one of them literally just sheared off while I was tightening them. Very poor tolerance kinda disappointed - but the weight of it is such - it’s not going anywhere. The problem I’m having now is I keep getting a lid open message when the lid is actually closed. I’m using the slo roller accessory. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?

Capacity and price are the killers for it. The capacity for kamados in general is ridiculously tiny compared to pellet smokers, especially if you factor in price. LoneStarGrillz 20x42" pellet smoker is the best on the market as far as I'm aware, and it costs $2895, which is barely more than the Big Joe III. The Konnected Joe's price is just ridiculous for what it delivers.

They're also less efficient and use a lot more pellets.

@@metalmulishaz123 Less efficient is actually a good thing when you're smoking stuff, which is why James developed the Double Indirect Method in the first place. There's a reason kamados in a traditional setup aren't typically considered a good tool for smoking things. Granted, pellet smokers aren't either, but the LSG one is the best in that regard as far as I'm aware. Either way, most people don't care. Pellet smokers are as popular as they are because of how easy they are to use. They're a great option to have during the week when someone doesn't necessarily have the time to build a fire and wait 30-60 minutes for a pit to stabilize at the temperature they want, etc.

This is true. Efficiency is the killer of flavour

I searched konnected Joe vs treager and no videos came up. I think you need to dust this grill off, bring your treager loving neighbor over and have a grill off to show everyone how much better charcoal is vs pellets.

I wouldn’t take a Kamodo or Big green egg if you gave it to me. I sold my Weber kettle. These are dirty smoke cookers. I don’t want an outside oven aka pellet grill. My indoor oven proteins taste the same if cooked on a outdoor pellet oven. No smoke flavor from either. Cheers!

Smaller fire cleaner smoke, might need to top it up though, Or do James double indirect

It's not the grill's fault if you're cooking in dirty smoke. Unless you're just referring to any charcoal or wood smoke flavor as being "dirty", seems a weird place to come and announce preferring protein cooked in an indoor oven.

Lol, James! You just talked me out of one . . . just kidding ;) Half the fun of BBQ is fussing about with the fire and all the related tasks that accompany a good cooking session. I think I might keep an eye out for a Big Joe, though.
