Hal Funkbass summer madness was originally the 2nd part of this but they made it 2 separate songs. on the light of worlds album. they both on there but not back to back.
Wow. Forgot all about this track. I'm 50. I wore this groove out when it came out. This whole album I found fascinating. Use to listen to it alone, headphones, in my room. Musta been 13/14 or so. Living in Germany. Didn't have any friends into funk/Kool. Lookin at all these comments regarding this album makes me feel like cryin. I had no idea others were similarly moved. The internet is amazing. (A blessing AND a curse). Oh,well. Peace to all.
@@MyNameIsMalachi Malachi 3...will a man rob GOD? How have you robbed me? In tithes and offerings. Bring m e all the tithes into the storehouse, that there be meat in my house. Prove me now saith the Lord of Hosts, that I may pour you out a blessing, that you won't have room to receive it!!! Quoted from my memory. Its not 100% accurate, need a Bible for that. Malachi, the prophet of God!
this song sounds like a relic, something you stumble upon lost to time only to realize its true value, i happened to hear this a long time ago only now realizing what the song was
I walked (I walked and walked) Like a zombie in the night You came (you came, you came) And you brought me back to life I tried so hard (I tried, I tried) To become the one you need But now you think that you're not enough for me You don't have to change for me I love you just the way you are I'd rather change the sun and the moon Or see December's snow in June
This song means a lot to me. Last year towards the end of summer, I couldn't get summer madness out of my head, so I would listen to it here on the tube. I did that for a few months and then decided to buy Light of Worlds to add to my collection not knowing this song was on there. I was first introduced to it when Pete Rock sampled it for We roll back in '08. I ordered the cd at the end of November and received it on December 6th. The day before I received it in the mail, I had spontaneous lung collapse which I thought was pneumonia. I was eventually hospitalized and needed surgery to correct it. After I was told I'd need surgery, I had this song on repeat and gazed out the window into the grey sky, in disbelief. I continued to play this often during my recovery, this song helped me get through a tough time.
Wow... I hope that you are fully recovered. The power of beautiful music. Every time that I listen to this song I will think of what this song did for you.
This song, one of my all time favorites, was recorded originally as an intro to Sumer Madness, which follows it on the album, fortunately, Ronald Bell shared this truth with me before he passed this year. RIP dear friend and mentor.
I played this for my now 11 year old son a couple years ago and he fell in love with it. The music is beautiful, haunting, ethereal...and then it's over. I wish it was longer!! 🥺
'' I walk, & walk & walk like a zombie in the night... what love can do....Kool n' the Gang at their finest !!!!! '' The song may run short, but the message runs deeper !!!!!!
I lived in Wiesbaden, Germany, from 1973 to 1976. I believe that this song and album came out in 1974. I used to play the drums and I also wore this groove out back in the day. This is perhaps my most memorable song by Kool And The Gang. This really evokes wonderful memories of my youthful high school days. People are really unaware of how deep this band really was during their heyday!!
I walked (I walked, and walked) Like a zombie in the night You came (You came, you came) And you brought me back to life I tried so hard (I tried, I tried) To become the one you need But now you think that you're not enough for me [Outro] You don't have to change for me I love you just the way you are I'd rather change the sun and the moon Or see December snow in June
Pete Rock,Jim Jones,&Max B ~~~ We Roll!!! Masta Ace ~~~ You Can't Find Me!!! Vince Staples ~~~ 102!!! Dom Kennedy ~~~ Home Alone!!! Jeru The Damaja ~~~ Logical!!!
Honestly I'm just a 21 year old white dude that loves soul music, but seeing everyone talk about experiencing this song in the 70s and 80s is really cool.
Same here - could replay that haunting intro melody and words in my mind over all these years since I first heard it in the seventies. I have the vinyl somewhere, though really need to download it and replay on up to date equipment! Love it as much now as then. Just beautiful.
@@thundorkat Yeah sorry, that was 1 year ago and i was kind of ''inmature'' in some music knowledge aspect, but well that doesn't take away the fact that this song is incredible
I remember when I was a little kid, back in the early 80's, that I put this album on my record player, and this song really stood out to me. Nearly 30 years later, it still sounds good, and the lyrics mean even more to me!!
Kool&Gang with that New Jersey sound...1974..my favorite album ever...i remember when Kool and his brother Ronald would come to temple 25 in Brick city NEWARK..1974 great year.. great memories
Very direct as the guitar opens; he makes his point early painting a picture of bleakness gone bright by a lover uncertain of herself, stated once: You don't have to change for me.
Overlooked on this album with some bangers: "Higher Plane", "Summer Madness", "Rhyme Tyme People," "You Don't Have To Change" is just a great vibe that Kool and company let loose.
It's actually the prelude to Summer Madness it belongs to the beginning of Summer Madness written by the late Trumpet player Spike Mickens I think, then Ronnie added Summer Madness.
1974. About two years later, George Benson - Breezin' Yes? No? Either way they are both great songs. I was all of 18 when I heard this one and in my loneliness I walked and walked feeling like a zombie in the night. Three years later she came she came and brought me back to life. She didn't have to change for me. Hey, also in 1974 Isley Brothers - Hello, Don't Change. I guess these musical genius, K&G, GB, and IB all thought alike. We were blessed.
When I was growing up here in Canada, I never knew of this song (or of the remarkable group) but a CTV News programme sampled the wonderful hook, and thankfully I never forgot it... GREAT to discover the song; now it's my favourite album by this outstanding band! =)
April 1st Is My Father’s Birthday & He Wasn’t No Joke To Anyone Or About Anything.. It Had To Literally Be Funny Or That Man Would Give You…. “The Stare Glare Out Of Nowhere” Whewww! Either Way, I Love You Dad! I’ve Started Working At A Mechanic Shop, Come Work With Me One Day.. Much Love From Your One And Only “RockHead” 👋🏾💣💕🤝
Why the best songs gotta be short? I got It on CD and order the vinyl online. This Is the best album ever. I was only 2 years old playin It. I was hook.
me too! I had the album, then all these years, I could only recall the tune and " I walked, I walked and walked", wonderful to find it here. But the tune is haunting me again........ it's the touch of sadness in it.
On Vlad TV RU-vid channel. Robert Bell mentioned, "we played with this new synth over this song, and we liked how it sounded, let's called it Summer Madness". The roots of G-Funk are heard on the first 8 bars. Indubitably, Kool & The Gang is legendary.
I used to pause/record the break back in '87. I've always thought this song was sad but tough. The music that is. Their vocals left something to be desired IMHO. JT made that happen. Can't beat the analog key board sound.
This album signaled a turning point in Kool and the Gangs "concsiousness." Their new found spirituality. I bought it as soon as they released it and it rates...for me... as their best! Here is a suggestion go crate diggin for this album "Light of Worlds" I promise you there are many great tunes that are sample worthy . Oh and they stand up by themselves also. I'm just sayin'
@baldboy1da1 , Word! Pete Rock...damn..he hooked this joint up son, but the original is still my favorite. Speaking of Pete Rock did you know that Guru would have been fifty this July? I love the music I've grown up listening to. I've been a fan of Rap & Hip Hop since it's inception and House, Free Style, Funk, Jazz. I remember listening to this joint when I was a teenager back in Philly in the 70's and I was lost for words. This song and "Whisper Softly" are two of my favorites.
Small world. We were living in Hainerberg during your years. I walked to Wiesbaden Jr High and Wiesbaden High. Moved in '76. Graduated HS in '78 in Cali. It's A Small World After All.
@BridgetR72 I was still in my teens - 15 years old, to be exact. Anyhow, they had a jazz/funk style that we appreciated back then. I really wish that groups would return to including instrumentals in their repertoires, like Kool & the Gang, EWF. We would pay to see these bands perform the non-vocals as much as we would pay to hear the vocals. What has happened over the years?
