The ringing at 1 Mhz is probably due to the input impedance of the scope. If you have it set to 1M or 10M, then you'll have reflection. Set the input impedance of your scope to 50 Ohm, which is the same as the output impedance of the signal generator, and use BNC to BNC cable (50 Ohm). This brings me to one issue I have. the Amplitude setting does not assume that the load is 50 Ohm. Many signal generators do (or allow the setting). If you do connect a 50 Ohm load, that will reduce the amplitude by 50%.

Yes, straight through 50 ohm cable and 50 ohm termination at the scope. I can forgive a $140 generator for not allowing for the 50 ohm termination case in it's displayed amplitude. If you need that feature it comes on generators costing 2 or 3 times the amount and up. And even those ones you have to tell them you are terminating with 50 ohms, so if you do that and then forget later you get twice the displayed amplitude into your possibly delicate hi-z input - which can cause you grief.

Thanks for reviewing the Koolertron CJDS66, I just bought one, hopefully the Tech channels stay, they are of great help for us tinkerer"s !

As for the slippery rubber alligator clip covers simply take a rag soaked with Acetone or nail polish remover (make certain that the nail polish remover is acetone based, not water based) and rub the slippery rubber clip ends with the rag. You can see the shine come off and then they're much easier to work with. Very good review. Thanks for your time.

Thanks very much for the video. Very clear and understandable! I just purchased one of these. I Like the screen-shot with the signal/scope in same view. I'm wanting to do an IF alignment of an old 1947 era radio. Thus I want a 455khz wave modulated with 400 hz. Looks like I'll be able to do this with the MOD/PULSE function. Thanks again!

Just got this from Amazon, so cool! I got a SDS1202-X Siglent as my first Oscope also, but it comes in few days. Just hooked this up to a spare center speaker I have to mess with it. 70$ prime day for this, great deal!

I just picked one of these up today. On initial unboxing I was thinking to myself “ I got taken for 166 dollars” ! But after playing around with it for a while, I feel it money well spent... Within five minutes I had 98% of the thing figured out. Watching this video gave me that 2% I was ignorant of. Never even bothered to read the instructions, I’m well aware on how lacking Chinglish instructions can be.... Its more than accurate enough for what I’m going to use it for ( Mostly out in the field) and it sure is a hell of a lot lighter than my older HP generator.... ( Its an older military generator and it weighs a ton and a half) Yeah, the HP is light years ahead of this Chinese model on accuracy and stability, but it takes a bit more time to set up as well... The CJDS66 is basically plug and play and doesn’t take up half an acre of bench top in the process...

I agree with you on supporting channels that educate the younger folks out there , everyone has to start somewhere right... I am an old school radio tech myself...... But I have yet to see a video on one of these quote , unquote signal generators actuall in action..... What I mean by that is actually injecting a signal into a ham radio or a cheapo CB radio and actually chasing that signal in the radio with a signal tracer......My old HP would do way more stuff than these newer DDS type units.... But there are ways to do certain things with these newer units.... They can't put out a RF signal like the HP's do.... They cant put out a signal in uV's like a HP can.... At least I can't find that in the spec sheets.... I sure would like to see a video with one of these unit's in action on an actual repair ......I was thing about getting the JuncTek 80 or 100 meg type....But I might have to pass on that and throw in a couple hundred more dollars and try to find a good used HP actual Signal / RF generator....

@cajuncoinhunter

@@EETechStuff Oh yeah Ham and CB still going strong , Ham radio got a good shot in the arm when the license for Novice dropped needing to know Morse code, It's called the Technician license now........ Trucker's are keeping the export radios selling strong and in case something happens that the generators at the cell towers run out of propane there's always CB to contact people ..

What amplitude in volts setting is it for 0 dB ? I need to generate 1kHz - 0 dB as per the service manual for a Revox unit.

Regarding the "distortion" of the waveforms at higher frequencies. First, as other have said, if the coax is not terminated a the scope, then reflections will plague the sharp edges of square waves. But the other complaints of distortion at higher frequencies result from the limited (as advertised) bandwidth. So a square wave at 15MHz is going to need significant contributions from odd harmonics, at 3x, 5x, 7x etc of the fundamental, so that's 45MHz, 75MHz etc in order to look like a square wave. If the unit can't produce those frequencies, then of course you don't see a square square wave.

Hello, I have a question, what is the TTL-in (GPI Digital signal input interface) pin in the port on the back of the function generator for? and investigated but could not find an application, I thought it was related to the function of the EXT-in frequency meter of the generator but they are not even bridged and as much as I investigate the TTL protocol I cannot find anything about that pin. Greetings from Chile.

There is a 10 pin connector on the back of the generator to be used for TTL. Do you have any idea what the part number is for the mating 10 pin female connector is for this generator? Thanks John

Those dnc connectors on the front that come out to alligator clips. Dumb question. Could you hook the alligator clips to speaker wire going to an 8 ohm load (piezo tweets) with a say, 25-30khz sign wave? Would this work?

Why not try a direct coax with 50 ohm termination? Maybe that would improve the signal captured on the scope.

that the higher frequencies don't do the higher voltage outputs doesn't really matter that much because you normally don't see any logic signals with that high of a voltage anyway.
@uni-byte
@uni-byte Год назад
The output impedance of these generators is 50 ohms (you already showed that with the 50 ohm load test). The cable is 50 ohms. If you want a clean signal you need to terminate the end of the cable (where it enters the scope) with 50 ohms too, or you will get ringing and other undesirable behavior. You should also be going straight from the generator to the scope with a 1:1 50 ohm cable if you really want to see what the generator can do. Not through the alligator clip cables to a scope probe.

What model is this ? The 20,30,50 or 60Mhz model ? I suspect you have the 20 model. That's why it is inaccurate over 10Mhz for square waves

Nice video, thank you for posting this. These seem to work pretty good, until you get up in frequency and the sine wave becomes stepped… sample rate and hardware limitations…as expected…. Is there a programming interface spec that would let someone write their own code to set this up under computer control? Maybe in python with some simple examples.

anyone here have the first clue what the ttl expansion slot on these is for? Mine came with an expansion card but the manual says literally nothing about it
@EETechStuff
@EETechStuff Год назад
It's not really an expansion, it's a fairly standard feature of most function generators. It merely provides a TTL signal with the same frequency and phase as the signal it's outputting, so you can use it to synchronize other devices, like triggering a scope, etc. I'm sure you can google "function generator ttl" or something like that to see what people use it for. Personally I've never found it of much use.

If you enjoy your job, do you tell your boss he doesn't need to pay you? Seriously? I've been an Electrical Engineer for over 45 years, and I absolutely loved my job. But not once did I tell my boss "Hey, I really enjoyed working on the projects I was working on this week, so forget the paycheck". Nobody on this planet does anything of value for free. But the internet is the only place on planet Earth where, for some insane reason, people actually think they're entitled to free stuff. And to justify their entitlement they tell content creators "Hey, you enjoy making these videos, therefore you should do it for free and I shouldn't have to pay anything". Crazy.

If you were doing it for love, then getting hold of some equipment you want to try and recording a video showing your experience and observations costs you nothing... If it is for Love, it is not a Cost it is a Benefit. If it is for Revenue, then I hope you get more Views and Likes mate ! 73 OM

I'm not doing it for revenue. I get no revenue. It would be nice to get revenue, but I get none. Over 300 videos produced over 6+ years, and still I get virtually no income from this. Do the math. I get maybe $2USD per 1,000 views. It's not about me, it's about the viewers who feel zero obligation to give anything in return. Why does my reasons for doing this have any relevance to anyone? And to say that doing all of this work and spending all this time trying to help others learn stuff costs me nothing is ludicrous. Where do you get the right to judge others' motives and costs?
@EETechStuff
@EETechStuff 11 месяцев назад
Your like makes no difference. You view makes no difference. I get nothing in return. The revenue I get for your view is 0.2 US cents. If you appreciated someone producing this content for you, maybe you would tell others so I get some more views, or contribute a few $ by clicking "Super Thanks". But everyone thinks they're entitled to free stuff. Sad.
