@@Sarah-kv3qsut her home language in Senegal (Wolof) specifically was what she spoke and she has to learn English when her parents moved to Belgium according to the video. I’m Senegal French is the official language but the majority of the population may not speak it. Just because English and French is spoken in the contient of Africa, it doesn’t mean it’s spoken in the region she’s from anyone else for that matter. They Spanish, English and French in the continent of North America but one wouldn’t expect a person speaks either of these if they’re from the U.S. Africa is an entire continent you know lol so you’re comment sounds kind of uninformed. It’s impressive that she speaks 3 languages because we know dor sure she has to take time to learn English as a child. I’m not sure about the French since the video doesn’t touch on that, French is spoken in both Senegal and Belgium countries so it’s not surprising she’s familiar with it.

It's crazy to me. Because she's amazing. Learning all these things at a fast pace when she didn't initially speak the language. The courage as a black Woman. Givin that kpop is MAJORLY inspired by black culture and music. Yet when a black person actually pulls up it's a problem? And the countless writers that write kpop music for our favs. Their names are almost never mentioned. Ppl act like these idols some who barley speak English are just out here singing and rapping in AAVE. Ppl just refuse to acknowledge these things it baffles me

This is the danger of appropriation...it's very different from appreciation. When a culture is appropriated it is, in short, stolen. She's a role model for me. I hope for nothing but great things for Blackswan, they've worked so hard, they deserve all the recognition and love. All the members are hard-working women who want to make their dreams come true, and we should support them. Even though they just came out of a scandal, everyone moved on and we should too, we shouldn't send hate towards anyone. Even if you haven't forgiven Leia, it will do nothing but harm the group to send hate towards her. Focus on supporting the other members. Let's just send love and support towards them.

It's so strange how mixed(white and asain)or white ppl are usually more exepted to become idols as I've observed but the moment a person with a darker skin tone or a black person comes to the scene its so dramatic. Ppl get so mad and say the most vile things. It really brings out the worst in ppl to see black ppl or poc shine just a little bit. Of course I'm talking about the bad ppl. But it really hurts to see as a black kpop fan that we only and finally have one idol to represent us that looks like us and it's an issue to some ppl. But herly fatou is shining regardless ✨️. U go gorl

I agree! I noticed the amount of waisan idols increasing and it seems almost like a trend. I have no grudge on them, it’s just that they have privilege for being part white. We still don’t have a blasian idol in a kpop group so it just goes to show how much anti black kpop entertainment is.

@AdeolaAsh
@AdeolaAsh 2 года назад
2 main reasons I can think of: 1) her company is useless and is not doing a good job of promoting her group. 2) Dark skinned Black women usually do not find much success in the Korean entertainment industry. The Black people who usually get famous there are dark skinned Black men. The few Black women who become popular there usually have very light skin and are mixed. The dark skinned mixed girls don’t get attention. This is not too surprising as discrimination against dark skin in Korea is alive and well, people like to lie and say it doesn’t apply to Black people but it does. They accept the darker Black men because of fetishization and perceived masculinity. Fatou has almost 1 million followers on TikTok and about 400k on Instagram, so she is internet famous to a certain extent. But she and her company will have to work 50 times harder to be popular where she is, sadly the company is already slacking.

Growing up Blasian in the US, I can certainly relate. The thing is, you started very young and that has it advantages. I learned early that I might be the Black Sheep in my family, but I also had strength and purpose. I did translations for my older family members, looked after cousins who visited from afar and I was the family hand bringing in a 25 pound bag of rice up 2 flights of stairs for great grandma. I found the silver lining in my clouds early. Because of it, I no longer "fear" where I travel or whom I help. I work in the medical field and translating Chinese in the mother tongue and an indigenous language often brings a surprise to others. However, I "focus" on the pluses of serving my community and the heartfelt responses from those lives I have saved and prolonged. I do try to maintain balance though. I remind myself that negative comments are often some issue of the person internally and just walk away. To create balance, I also make sure to love myself well so that I also become a martyr. Being a pioneer and a pillar in your community is never easy, but as you know...the pluses outweigh the negatives. Just keep going and making those with West African heritage proud of you!

I think the Senegalese speak French too, no? If so, her move to Belgium may have been smoother than someone who was never exposed to it. But even so it's so impressive that she can speak English, French and Korean!

Am so happy to see this especially because she has worn her natural hair on stage but hasn’t also lost her flavour on stage as a black girl.

And the first non-mixed idol . #Fatou is probabbly someone who we should look up to cause I mean she literal speaks out about things unlike other idols who only speaks out when their company puts out a statement about something that the idol has been accused of . * and no I'm not saying that other kpop idols aren't good like her and im no hating on them , im just saying that other kpop idols don't have the confidence that #Fatou has even tho when on camera they look and act confident *

Love that she is such a positive representation of bw. No hate, hear me out. When non black people think of bw they usually think the stereotypes, loud, manish, fat, unattractive etc. But Fatou is tall, thin, fit, girly, and took the time to learn the language and customs. She is what media doesnt like to promote. I just hope that with her on tv, you wont have a lot of ignorant and rcist kpop idols using blaccent to mock bw. I'm looking at Wendy from red velvet and Min from miss a.

I bet many of the negative comments are from other kpop competitors trying to wear her down. the internet creates this anonimity that anyone can attack another without worrying about being discovered. So those who are getting negative comments, you really need to get a thick skin....most of those comments are from your rivals trying to break you.

It’s incredible how she seemed to have just fallen into being a kpop star unintentionally in just one year, having insane talent naturally, while also learning the whole language in just a year and speaking well, while also breaking the racial barriers and being the first. It’s actually insane and so inspiring. Not only that but she naturally has the perfect body and face for kpop??

It's crazy she has gotten racism, kpop music itself takes influence from hip hop and rap, which are derived from black culture. It's hypocritical to shame this women when other Korean artists are doing what she's doing but they're racially korean.

I was kinda confused with the title, because I remembered Alex Reid, but then I remembered. Fatou is the first African, and Alex is the first African-American.
