SK has a really nasty issue with classism and being pretty is associated to being wealthy and therefore your value is associated to it. Same goes with being skinny. Poverty is extremely looked down on and they are very vicious to anyone who goes outside of those strict standards. This is because SK has historically recently gotten to industrial/technological era and they did it REALLY fast. The culture hasn't adjusted quite yet from that insecurity of starvation and poverty so it's exceedingly vicious to anyone who even comes close to indicating it.

It's one thing to not find someone attractive, but a culture that wishes someone dead because they can't live up to the beauty standards needs to reflect on itself. All cultures have evil parts to them, I guess this one still shocks me sometimes with how easily they can turn to hate... I don't know. I really don't want to look down on the Korean culture cuz there's really amazing things to take away from it and learn from, but the dark side of the culture can be very dark.

It's unfortunate that MISS-K-DRAMA has been really playing up generalizations based on a very loud minority, which generates greater misunderstandings and ill will...all while blaming Korean "strict beauty standard" thingy when it's something so much more hyped by non-Koreans. Even Kim Go-Eun is overwhelmingly praised here in Korea for her natural, traditional beauty among the populace.

Her dimples literally turn me into a pile of squishy marshmallow fluff every time she shows them. You don’t see Lee Sang Yoon getting shamed for his dimples. It is always women who have to look a certain way to be considered “suitable” for roles. Then again, the same people being so hostile also want their rookie idols taking on roles they aren’t anywhere close to being ready for… not like singing and dancing translate into delivering emotional expressive dialogue performance and fight/action, kiss, chase, and other scenes. It isn’t like Lee Ha Nui has solely relied on her beauty, either… she is amazingly multitalented and has been in musicals, too, which is probably why she landed the role in Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People (it’s ML also not stereotypically attractive but ideal for the role, especially with how tall he is, something that never really sunk in til he was costars with ever-adorable Kim Yoo Jung). The idea that having muscular/athletic legs makes a woman too masculine is sick (ballerinas do, too, yet are considered darling and dainty all the same)… they literally want everyone being 45kg (99lbs), which many ARE but which medically is considered malnourished, drastically so, a weight that you usually have someone admitted into an eating disorder program for if they are grown adults over 150cm(=59”, 4’11”) maintaining that weight in western nations. As bad as it is that western countries do little about obesity issues, for rich nations to still have some of their biggest economic contributors (people bringing in the money in other words, idols and actors/actresses among them) malnourished is hideous. Lee Ha Nui SHOULD be not just a physical model but a ROLE model for young women. Be fit, strong, and lovely with the body you were born with. Park Soo Ae is another who gets similar hostile treatment for looking “too exotic,” but I love that she looks so unique, almost like a Polynesian goddess. People always take their own unhappiness out on others. It is depressing that people who are unhappy with their own lives insist on dragging down others.
