Yes i understand these standards have detrimental effects on the youth as a whole. Most of them feel inferior to this definitely but imagine growing up looking at models or celebrities having these standard looks. This will then make them wanna try to look like them so that they can "fit in" or be accepted in the society's eyes. They get procedures done or make changes in their lifestyles and then when they become pretty according to these standards someone who is not even korean tells them that their beauty standards are bad on the younger generation or that there can be changes made in these standards that will offend them or they may not be willing to change it cuz they've worked for it and paid huge amount of money for either surgery or products to get yhis look. Bringing a change in the beauty standard means that they're investment on achieving this certain "look" will all go to vain. (Im sorry i tried to explain the best i can im not good at it as it can be seen clearly) 😅

@@pneron2032 Tiny faces, literally paper white skin, huge eyes, big lips , skinny, and literally anything that doesn't fit these descriptions is considered disgusting so basically the problem that people have with beauty standards in Korea is that most of these features are western features so teens become depressed for being "disgusting" and that's why Korea has the highest suicide rates. In my opinion I think any country that forces young women and men to surgically change features that every asian has is extremely superficial and materialistic thankfully I was blessed by being born in America, because im mexican so i would be considered ugly lmao.

"huge eyes" A standard that results from the way a face can be framed and looked better in portraits, photos and other type of media. Not only that but small eyes have a long standing imagine of being shifty/fox-like in many cultures which gives the impression of the person being shifty/someone who plots. "big lips" thin lips show a lack of vitality and they can make someone look like they have no mouth in media and even in person. "skinny" again, a body standard that comes from the perfect image of a person being statue like because when you are skinny, your skin is often better looking because it doesn't stretch. What you described are things that exist majorly for other reasons than being western features.

People will show up in a place with beautiful people instead of a place with ugly people. I Agree that once you get to know a person you go for his personality but MOST cases the first filter is The "genetics" .

Good looking people make more money but "ugly" ones are the ones hiring them

The correct statement would be, goodlooking people tend to be products of wealth by the person with money, has more options and generally chooses a more attractive partner. So genetics have been altered overtime to produce goodlooking people from richer backgrounds which tends to afford them better education and more opportunities. The person who made the wealth on his or her own does not need to be goodlooking, but their offspring might be.

As a Korean male, I definitely respected the male individual's opinions. Everyday I try to look at things both objectively and holistically. In Korea, appearance is of upmost value. Individuals who are not well-groomed and unkempt, are viewed as lousy and cheap by society, It is unfortunate, especially for university students or lower income households. I do however agree with her on adapting to standards when it comes to the workplace. I find most people tend to overlook this aspect, as there seems to be not only a beauty standard, but a universal standard that the job applicant must be dressed according to ethic code, and must conduct themselves per guidelines. It is quite unfair to judge an applicant as unqualified simply based on appearance, rather than their repertoire, or prior professional service. There are quite a few differences in culture, but I do hope international viewers who oppose Korea's harsh beauty standards, also look at it from a universal perspective. Just like with the workplace, a lot of western nations such as France also value physical appearance, so I hope people are also keen and aware that some of Korea's standards might also reflect their own country's standards.

Dont worry, as you see above my comment there is a Korean who agreed to the man more. And I myself as an international viewer personally found myself agreeing to the woman more, though it was pretty balanced respect towards both outlooks, so its all just perspectives preferences and opinions and beliefs more so than cultures, though those too play a big part in it.

No I agree Chisame. The beauty standard question to me felt like people should be ashamed to not fit into the standard in Korea and that they need to change to fit the standard. By her answer to me it indicated people that do not fit the mold need to change to be beautiful and that the way they are born is not good enough to be beautiful. That’s why from a western point of view her answer is not seen in a good light.

@@hut1870 Yeah, me too. I'm also Korean and sometimes I think we need more diversity in beauty standards. But I think the woman is actually pretty open-minded. I think it's possible for her thoughts to change later on.

She seemed very third wave feminist to me - I loved how respectfully she came across with her opinions but I’m more conservative so everything he said I agreed with 100%
