The weird thing about being "laway conscious" in the Philippines, is it completely disappears when it comes to the drinking culture. EVERYONE drinks from ONE glass (tagay) that is passed around. And it's a very very ancient tradition (early Spanish explorers even described it). I still remember it feeling really weird the first time I drank at an upscale bar and we all had separate bottles. I remember thinking "so how are we supposed to know whose turn it is to drink?" 😅 P.S. It's also the reason why there's no equivalent for "Cheers" in Filipino languages. Because we can't clink glasses/bottles if there's only one glass. So when forced to translate "Cheers", we just usually say "Tagay!" (even though it doesn't make sense). A lot of people also say "Kampay", thinking it's a native word (it's not, it's from Japanese "Kanpai").
@_lim1542
@_lim1542 Год назад
kanpai origin is Chinese, but the Japanese use it also
@AngryKittens
@AngryKittens Год назад
@@_lim1542 Yes, the ultimate origin is Chinese, but we specifically acquired it from the Japanese. The Chinese version is "Gānbēi", which makes it obvious we didn't acquire it from them, but secondhand via Japanese. Korean also acquired their own version from Chinese: "Geonbae".
@_lim1542

@@AngryKittens oh yes they probably learned it during the japanese occupation of the philippines. They did horrible things to the Filipino people 😔

Flatter chopsticks is easier to use. I don’t know about being better for precision using that because it’s easier. Try using round steel chopsticks, I bet you’ll easily find out that it’s the one that truly needs better precision. For me, anything square-ish or flat chopsticks are for children because it’s the easiest to use and learn from. I’ve noticed Koreans and Japanese are similar holding their chopsticks. Like children lol. I hold mine Chinese style and Japanese think it’s harder for them to do it that way. I live in Japan so I don’t know why Koreans hold their chopsticks same as Japanese because I can’t ask them in person lol.

"They honk when they see a beautiful woman come by, Typical Filipino" they see you as gorgeous, pretty and cute Jessica you should know that by now! I thought maybe Koreans are investing in the Philippines but I was amazed so many Koreans restaurant for Koreans even in the tourist area,. So many Koreans tourist eating at Koreans restaurant, what I am saying is , I thought this tourist help the Philippine restaurant but is not, the Koreans are helping themselves.

serving spoon is not just a laway conscious purposes only it also makes food life much longer. Saliva will speed the breakdown of food, and human mouths are also full of various bacteria that will speed the spoilage of food. especially Filipino food, which is known for having a lot of ingredients like kare-kare, which can get easily spoiled. para sa Sharon. hahahaha

Came here to say how much I love your content! Also, being ‘laway conscious’ is better for stomach health. A bacteria called ‘h-pylori’ can be easily spread through sharing food and saliva. It can be painful for some and not for others. It is a really serious condition and needs to be treated to kill the bacteria. I learned this the hard way after having an endoscopy when I moved to Taiwan. Just something I thought I’d share as a fellow foodie. Love the content
