Yeah it’s very easy to say from our homes in America to tell Koreans to have more babies but in reality, people genuinely don’t want to have kids because of financial reasons and afraid of losing their jobs for taking leaves. Financial issues aside, Steffie raised a point about how monogamy doesn't play a whole lot with adults nowadays. it seemed Dumb was on the same page with that; talking about freedom. THIS might be why the fertility rate is dropping across the world, not just in Korea. People of age who could be starting families don't because of the freedom they crave in having options. Rick, in contrast follows a more traditional mind set believing in monogamy. So it isn't surprising that he is the one in this group who has started a family. In turn, he is sacrificing a lot of his freedom to do so. I'm not saying either is better than the other, I just think it is more popular to be "free" at this point in time instead of monogamous. I am sure opinions will swing back and forth as all things do. That being said, I feel like it is easier to start a family in a monogamous relationship. Castles can't be made in sand, you need a partner who is going to stay even when the going gets tough. Love the dynamic of this group, shout out to the pod. Peace and love everybody.

There's a multitude of reasons but the big one is that Korea is still a very patriarchal society. Pregnancy and motherhood takes a ridiculous physical and mental toll. And in Korea, the "traditional role" is that women still bear most of the responsibility for children, meaning literally having to do everything as the primary caregiver, taking care of the house, appeasing the in-laws, etc. Korea is extremely expensive to live, and the payscale is much different than the US - housing costs are insane, job market is oversaturated and hypercompetitive, work hours are insane, childcare is expensive, marriage rates are low because Koreans want to try to prioritize work over family, when women do have babies they take maternity leave and suddenly they're on a different team/no room for career growth aka discrimination. Just some of the general things and obviously situations can be different case by case, but yeah... TLDR: marriage and children is not in that much of a positive light in Korean society at the moment. If you're really curious about this there's a bunch of articles and documentaries out there (highly recommend reading/watching from Korean sources as they will have the best depiction of what is happening on the ground).

Iam not korean so my opinion is not really valid but I do have a theory about Koreans not wanting to have kids which I think can be similar to the Japanese not wanting kids. 1. Work ethics/Education Possibly due to the fact that Koreans have no time to meet people that arent from work or school due to exhaustion and everything has to be fast. So the emotional connections arent as solid. 2. No "illegitamate" children Korean soceity, as in most South East Asian countries, somewhat frowns upon the idea of people having kids outside of/before marriage (specifically in the single parent category) as something must of gone wrong with the person for that to happen, so the fear of judgement is there especially from family. Since its dating, marriage, move in together, kids. While in the west it could be dating, move in together, kids and then marriage. 3. Money Probably the most obvious one. Rasing a child is SOOO expensive with inflation the cost of living, school, etc can be way too high for the average person to afford. Which means those less fortunate have even less luck. Again this is just a theory from the testimonies I have seen on youtube so it does not apply to everyone or I could be completley wrong too.🤣

The birthrate around the world is low but the mortality rate is high, everyone is living longer.. technically the world could get too crowded.
