I think the contestants were unknown new actors. Normal citizens would be more difficult to insure, if harmed, than actors at a gig (job). Watch how they introduce themselves in the full episodes. It's like a casting audition.
It was okay, but it wasn't as good as takeshi's castle or unbeatable banzuke. I think those japanese game shows are better even Gaki No Tsukai is so good too
Honestly, I never liked Wipeout. It just felt like a cheap copy of Takeshi's Castle/MXC where they just take out everything except the parts where someone falls down.
yeah american reality shows usually feature “normal” people compared to korean variety shows, which i’ve noticed usually feature celebrities. but from what i know there’s still an interview process and usually the people who want to be on those shows either want to be famous or have some other reason for wanting their face on tv. at least for dating programs, it’s mostly influencers these days. i think for shows like wipeout it was mainly just normal people who wanted to challenge themselves to try to win a prize haha.

The first time I watched jackass was when I first discovered the third movie in the roller buffalo scene with Johnny Knoxville and ever since then I’ve been watching it all the time and I’ve become a big fan of it and everything so keep watching jackass it’s the best

wipeout is a almost exact copy of a foriegn tv show, I THINK a japanese show. Its funny having them react to "an american tv show" which is technically correct, but its like american idol, which was just a copy of Britains Got Talent...
Jackass is an all time favorite tv show and I enjoy watching it all the time almost everyday now and it’s just amazingly entertaining and fun to see some of the stuff that they do can be dangerous painful and gross to see and tell you not to try this stuff at home but the more you watch it like me the better it gets and you can tolerate all of it and keep watching it all the time so you can enjoy it and become a fan of it too
Wipeout, the second show, was to my memory an even mix of normal people and athletic normal people. Everyone did terribly on it, so nobody really had an edge up until the final challenge.

American ninja warrior wasn't based on let's go dream team it was based on the Japanese show ninja warrior....though they are similar but the difference is ninja warrior is regular people dream team was celebrities
The last one is actually based on Sasuke (or Ninja Warrior) from Japan. The American athletes weren't cutting it with the rules the Japanese put in place, so they dumbed it down a bit and brought it to the US.
Many of these types of shows were effectively copied from Japan. I think the first major exposure to the west may have been 'MXC' in 2000 - where they made funny english dubs of the Japanese game show 'Takeshi's Castle' from the 80s. I'd imagine many people still recognize the name "Kenny Blankenship" along with the others. There were(still are?) also some really bizarre game shows in Japan.
Winnee, super mario, that was funny. Ladies I can't explain why we American guys think getting hurt is funny, but it is kind of, hurt not injured. We have a saying here, fuxx with the bull and you will get the horn. OSSC films that include Nascar, NFL and bull riding proves we are either not that smart, have a high pain tolerance or both. We need to start playing chess or under water basket weaving, something that doesn't require first aid. I remember your film Jackass Grandpa in the restaurant farting, I still watch that one.

growing up, i also didn't get how i watched jackass before like looking back at it now, there are intense and absolutely gross parts of the show but i remembered enjoying watching it lol
Sad to see my favorite Jackass prank not shown (the giant high five). No mention of the original Wipeout, Most Extreme Elimination Challenge (MXC). Would love to see more Jackass. Also would be cool to see South Park.

I remember that 3rd show too. It was 2 survival experts that went out and tested how tough they could be. Not exactly the smartest thing to do. A entomologist named Justin O. Schmidt subjected himself to just about every known insect sting or bite and rated them 1-4. A European honey bee is an example of a sting at level 1, a number 4 example is a bullet ant. Will let you guess on how that ant gets its name because it's one ant you don't want to be hit by.
Compare any American game show to nasubi. That was a messed up show that kept going because their audience couldn’t get enough. Just so we are clear the man was not allowed to leave at any point of the show shit was sad and depressing.
Its a shame they didn't show the really wild Jackass clips like the Poo Cocktail Supreme, Anaconda Ball Pit, Riot Control Test, Beehive Limo, Big Red Rocket etc. the ones they should are pretty tame by comparison, still loved that show when I was younger, it was basically the culmination of all the dumb ideas you have as a kid played out in reality.

I’m American and I would never watch that show, the one with the biting from animals, in my opinion, that’s stupid. I wouldn’t watch the jackass show either, just not my style, but, some of it is funny, the jet engine episode, but the tooth pulling with the car 😬🤢
I've been shocked by those types of stun guns (not the shoot in and stick) by friends having fun, not the cops lol . It really isn't as bad as you think, your mind makes you overreact to a sting but really you are fine
Its funny how everyone who grew up with this is like ya whatever but for these girls its the most insane shit ever, hell they didnt even show the more insane jackass stuff, or hell anything from wildboyz. I think television still being very regional in nature results in very different sensibilities
