Just a suggestion: When making videos of products like this, slow down the shutter speed of your video camera to get rid of all the flickering light and screen line artifacts.
Dude its Korg.. knowing them for the past 40 years they dont give a shit about their customers or brand image. As long as kids are buying the volcas by the millions, the consumer can take their opinion and shove it.
They wouldn't even have to slow the shutter, they just need one that syncs with the refresh rate of the SQ64 screen . . . or alternatively adjust the frame rate the video is being shot at . . . either way it's surprising to see a big company like Korg not able to handle basic video technicalities like this.
if you need to change shutter speed of your camera you just change it. to change shutter speed of the camera at korg you will need to go through massive labyrinths of bureaucracy.. so yeah, no change of shutter speed in nearest future.
One little thing this one has that many others don't seem to is multitouch. People underestimate the value of that, and I'm not sure James here talked about it very much. The same procedure that you apply to change the pitch of one note or step, you can apply to as many as you can press the button for, and they don't have to be adjacent or anything. Really lovely feature and it applies to a lot of things besides pitch. This sequencer was obviously a labor of love for somebody and I am quite impressed.
So somebody left a SQ-1 alone with a Beatstep Pro a little too long and the next thing ya know, there were a litter of these little rascals steppin around the room. But not gonna lie, giving the SQ-1 the depth of a BSP, and with a superior form factor makes this a yes for me. Gonna have to pick one up.
Can you do polymetric on individual drum tracks? Can i have 8 Step "hihat" together with a 64 Step "kick" sequence? (in other words, can i change the track length of any D-SubTrack ?)
Why only 4 tracks?! ... Over midi, is it impossible to make more pages for the sequencer to be useful also for multipart synths? like Virus Ti or Kyra, for example? I understand why the CV part is limited, but why on midi?

Looks like a useful piece of studio equipment. Can you set the 8 additional outputs to transfer normal midi signals? If so, could I then use 8 jack to 5-pin midi adaptors to send midi notes to 8 different synths or drum machines? Cool video.
Vain Sacrosanct - unless they've done something incredibly clever this won't be the case. It'd be like trying to get a midi signal from the audio out, completely different type of signal.
I am not able to delete additional pitch information on a step after accidentally recording more than one pitch, only clearing the whole pattern does the trick. Very strange... There seems to be no way to delete a whole step, turning off the gate keeps the pitch information intact... any ideas?
love the SQ1, and have 2 of them....but I really hope they have sorted out the SYNC output. On the SQ1 it is actually a short trigger with a smoothed-off leading edge (it looks like a shark's tooth on a scope) - this means that it won't trigger a lot of modular gear, and I end up having to use the gate output instead, which is a real waste. or run it through some kind of trigger modifier/ gate delay/ logic module or similar, just to change its shape
Are the Pitch/Gate/Mod track lengths all tied to one another per voice? Or can they each have their own length? If not, please consider this a feature request. :D
I've got a question. I have studied the SQ's "user manual" but can't find an answer. I've been looking for a sequencer that has a polyphonic reaction to chord based transpose demands from a keyboard. In other words: What happens if you play a chord in transpose mode? Will it then create a polyphonic(ly mirrored) sequence accordingly or wil it only pick up the root / lowest / highest note or whatever of the played chord?
Korg has to fix the SQ64 USB ext Midi rec, not working. Sonoma unsupported. Ext clock display fixed at own internal. No Mod options for CCs and only one per track/sub-tracks. The SQ64 Modulations needs to cover Midiloop ext rec fixed. Bastl Midiloop, Midiphy Loopa V4, Squarp Pyramid, Hermod+, Novation Beatstep. All of them has ext midi rec, with multiple modulations options such as ENV syncing, LFO mixing, and limitless for CCs and Korg can not make a single update to address this issue, nor ANYONE single VIDEO showing it is possible. Whilst ALL of the above, has videos showing how easy it is. From a DAW one needs to choose SQ64-SEQ over SQ64 Midi in, Usb ext clock, Midi notes are passed through, but nothing get recorder... Where are you Korg devs??? Please!!! Before we start mass replacing it with smth that works... fix it!!!
I'll be curious to see this running with a MakeNoise 0-Coast. The MakeNoise 0-Cntrl looked very interesting, but this seems to actually fill in the flaws that that had, even if one is modular and the other isn't.
the keystep pro is awful I own it so trust me. Worst sequencer I’ve ever bought and a very tedious menu system. Assigning midi channels is absolutely annoying which is such a dealbreaker for me.
Also, it’s a terrible midi controller that barely works for use in the DAW compared the regular keystep. So I’d rather have something that I could just plug a decent keyboard into
@@Ancaja123 What's difficult about holding the shift button and selecting a MIDI channel? I'm not sure how it could be simpler than that, it works exactly the same on the Beatstep Pro. I use this to switch between equipment on the fly pretty regularly.
I really like it--but wwwwhy the shift button on the right side?? If shift is something you want to access a lot of on-the-fly functions, then make that CONTROL button optionally swap with the SHIFT.
The manual says there's a 4-note limit to polyphonic record via external MIDI? I would love this to be able to record 8 notes since it can play 8 notes🤷♂
So.. After watching the video.. It looks like this would be the perfect secondary sequencer for my set up doing the drums.. But! Only in the case where they added a mode where you could have 4 different 16 steps sequences with 4 different gates or parts.. I come across this in my workflow all the time.. especially with my midi fighter twister.. I can groove on changing the kicks around but to change for a snare fill or something I have to page back and then page in to the snare sequence... If this could have a mode where there was 16 steps for the kick on top.. and then 16 steps for the snare underneath.. and then 16 steps for hat under that.. and then 16 steps for another drum part.. all on one page.. that would literally be perfect.. Please add this as a mode korg..
@@AJL200 Did you watch the video to see how those pages work? The point is... there is no current sequencer that will allow you to have one page of 16 steps for four parts.. I can't simultaneously put a kick somewhere as I take a snare out.. or vice versa.. There are more than enough outputs on D alone to have.. I think they said 8 drum parts.. what you can't have is 4 rows of four different drum parts and that... is how a person like me would like to program drums.. If it was able to do that.. I would buy it and only use it for drums because I have a Squarp Pyramid and a MF Twister for other duties but I don't have any type of equipment that will allow me to turn a break in to a four on the floor and add a fill all on one page.. which would be easily accomplished.. if this had a mode where there were 4 parts of 16 steps.
definitely intrigued by this, but programming 64 step sequences one step at a time with one knob would get pretty tedious. I'd have paid more money for 64 minipots. Or even 32, and a bank button. The immediacy of analogue-style sequencers is what's so appealing to me. the only downside of this approach is that if you loaded up a saved pattern, the knobs would no longer reflect the notes playing, unless you have endless encoders with no markers on them....and then it gets expensive! hmmmmm...
can it receive clock sync over usb from ableton, and simultaneously send midi out to synths? The SQ-1 can't and it's a pain. Either that or i haven't gotten the sync settings right.. but it seems like i've tried all of them, and i've heard from other people online that it can't.
The SQ-1 is designed to send MIDI, but not pass it through. It's really capable for its cost, but it isn't intended to be a massive hub. This one has more capability. I'm a bit more interested in some other sequencers currently, but this one has some nice features. Going back to the SQ-1, I do like it (I bought two used at a decent price over a year). I really like that you can set-up some additional notes (gates) to play and add them in and out live to vary the rhythm and notes being played. I also like running two parallel tracks where one is altering control voltages on something I want modified like LFO amount, resonance, or a filter cut-off). It also is compatible with old Hz/Volt settings , which is super cool as I have a Yamaha CS-15 that uses that setting.
Well, if this sequencer can’t do pattern chain or switch between patterns without interruption, please make it happen. Also - clock division and multiplication is important
@@xisotopex functionality is not the most important thing imho, but playability, comfort, live oriented design - korg has already implemented all these features in electribe series, why they can’t just continue to use their own best practices. It’s so nice for live session when you can tap next pattern or song, current one finishes and the next one starts instantly. Yes, there are software updates, but hackers made more firmware fixes and upgrades for volcas than korg. Why?... I really hope that they will add way more features than shown in pre release model, because those features are comfortable and essential. People don’t need all bells and whistles in one box, they need solid and useful sequencer
Yes, I hadn’t noticed that. Will stop y preorder. That plus having only one CC modulation lane per track (made worse by the non sensitive pads) broke the deal for me.
@@majri5000 i will be happy if Korg will not ditch sq-64 too early and make software updates really significant and useful. In case if you need external sequencer - it depends on your personal habits and skills. Keystep pro, beatstep pro are solid choices. For more complex things and experienced users - elektron sequencer(requires midi2cv converter except analog rytm), squarp pyramid, Engine maybe. Other option is to use two relatively simple separate sequencers. Steppy + Mimetic Digitalis for instance.
Yes, actually the prob/chance stuff is per step per track and you can also have entire tracks (A, B, C, and D only, not drum subtracks individually, mind you) play in different directions, stochastically, randomly, etc. It's one of the best parts.
Another suggestion to Korg: function takes precedence over style. Always. The step buttons with those thin slivers of light may have turned on your marketing people, but full back-lit buttons (like everyone else is using..... hint) are superior from a function point of view.
Those slivers of light seem easier on the eyes, separate the tracks more visually, reduce power draw, and presumably allows more of the button to be constructed out of stronger plastic. There are many other Korg sequencers with full back-lit buttons so they are part of the "everyone else" set. This seems purposeful. To assert it's merely a stylistic choice, and inferior functionally without giving a reason isn't really constructive.
Good addition to the sequencing options. The video kept me into the illusion of adding it to my setup, playing with it, and it was igniting my GAS until the commercial/corporate aspect became too evident with the “how visual this PRODUCT is” claim. Acquiring gear works on a kind of “suspension of disbelief” that makes you think there is a common goal, a sort of esoteric connection between music instrument makers and users which leads them to produce “magical,” or “inspiring,” or “thrilling” sonic creations. That affect is certainly strong when you get an instrument from a boutique maker. When the commercial transaction is in the foreground, “in your face,” GAS dissipates because illusions of inspiration, experimentation, and creativity become pushed to the side. So, THANKS! This brought me back to the materialist/capitalistic matrix to which “art,” despite all “inspirational” discourses, belongs.
I’ve only had mine a few days, but it does every scale I need and more besides, in every key. Bit of a learning curve, and not many good vids out there, mind...

@@xisotopex Unless you summed the inputs in (say) a 0-Coast or Model D. That was fun, albeit a bit random! The SQ-1 was the gateway for me- I needed something to sequence hardware that didn’t do midi over usb- and when I could afford the 64...
Why is it limited to 64 steps? Why can’t it simply mimic the sequencer in the Triton... or the Kronos? Why do we still have such silly limitations when hardware is so much faster and cheaper than it was twenty years ago....

I think you are comparing apples to oranges.. This for $300 has more cv outs right out of the box.. In order to access the cv/gate outputs on the Cirklon you have to also buy an expander.. there are many to choose from but that is also an added purchase.. and I don't have to tell you the price point of the Cirklon.. I think you know it very well. The keystep pro also has only four tracks.. and the video is quite clear when they said there are four main tracks.. but D has several outputs.. I'd have to watch the video again but I think it was something like 4-8 gates on the D output itself.

Universal Controlling via Midi, CV Gate Mod outs , Drumtrigger, all at the same time and in Combination.... Realtime Access on the Sequencing, 4 Parts as well, all melodic, one for Drum, all 4 can do besides Sequencing also alternative Arpeggiator... so ... Am I wrong, but I think its like a " copied product " ( not in look but sure in the features ) from what Arturia already has done ( much better ) earlier this year with a keyboard in case of the Keystep Pro... hahaha ....copying products, the big topic on youtube nowadays, be careful Korg... There are quite pissed off users out there in you tube they have obviously a big self problem with it and start to boykott products and companies haha... Me not , dont worry... But I am happy with my Keystep Pro, no need for that SQ thing... So, dont get me wrong, Korg has innovative products sure. I was earlier a big Korg user ... Some of the new gear now i like also , but I dont need, others I have in mind... Already owned a Minilogue XD before wich I really liked very much in the sound and features. But I sold now, cause I want go for a big Prologue 16 soon... very impressed by that line. Need more polyphony... For future for me were a PS 3300 a nice product Korg should think about to relaunch, ... And pls not in a limited edition ( thats shit ) like the ARP 2600, just as normal like an odysee or ms20 in a smaller layout maybe... In a price range also a normal people can afford it as well. We are not all millionaires and cannot buy every year stuff for 10000 and more bucks ...
