I doubt the inclusion of the D50. I have one, it looks killer, but it also is MINT. As mint as every D50 I see in collections. Why did this synth did not get stage use? DX7's and M1's most of the time have proper Patina. D50's seemed to had use for licking or adoration only.

1991 a local music store had a rental special for a month, so I got one and played with it in my dorm room. After messing around with a JX-8P and DX21, it was in a whole different league. I still have a serious soft spot for the generation of synths 1986-1994 or so. So much of the music made when I was in high school and college originated in the hearts of those beasts. Thank you for the memories, Claudio!

This must be one of the keyboards i saw the most during the 90's. Seems everyone wanted one for jazz, latin, pop, r & b, etc. One of the sounds was a bright piano that could cut through nearly anything. Built like a tank.

I never had an M1, but somehow I know most of it's presets. I was present whenit was introduced at the Music and Harmony show in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and remember that it had in incredible impact. People couldn't believe what they were hearing back then. I attended the Korg show several times that day just to experience it again. I used to annoy friends by informing them that I detected another M1 preset in a track, while they were dancing and having chicks on their radar in the nightclub. Oh well.

Get iM1 on the App Store - has all these (sounds) and more. And of course the real deal is to own an M1 but still kudos to KORG for transcending the Synth into the present

25:25 To me that sounds like an instrument which just plays through all the available sample memory. From my programming experience I recognize this from the cases where I accidentally messed something up with the sample durations but maybe this was an intentional thing by the creators. Samples based synthesizers of that age would often have different samples spread across the the keyboard range and I think that's what you can hear with those grouped similar sounding instruments cycling through the different pitches.

@@MrMediterrano The push buttons are in groups of four or two interconnected. After years of pressing they snap and loose their "click" , you can buy replacements ( secondhand ) from ebay ... they lift out of a recess with your fingers and their are plenty of really good tutorials on RU-vid ... Always worth changing the onboard battery while you have the back off .... Good luck .

The Korg M1 is just legendary. Such an iconic synth with such an atmospheric and unique sound. I only played one similar to this, the Korg T2, but it would have amazing to play an M1! It is iconic for house and 90s music but I think one if the best songs (or ones they I definitely know of) is I’m Going Slightly Mad by Queen, that choir patch is just do iconic and really recognisable.

@@timschulz9563 I want figures......now! ;-} My feeling tells me, KORG did better with the M1 than Yamaha did with the DX7. Two different concepts, totally different personal experience. The M1has much more warmth and I guess, that's why it's still more in our hearts and souls than the cooler sounding DX7. But seriously, there mustbe some hard figures that show which sold better!

@n8goulet
@n8goulet 3 года назад
@@timschulz9563 Positive! It's well documented. Check around reliable sources online like Keyboard Magazine, Electronic Musician, Sound on Sound, etc. 33 years later, the M1 is the best selling synth of all time. Not the DX7. Not the Kronos, not the Triton and not even the MOTIF. The M1 was simply that far revolutionary for the time it came out, and continued to dominate for years to come. But what really made it great was not only the sounds from Korg, but tons of expansion sounds from various companies, hardware accessories, etc. They expanded the M1 to do things it wasn't originally designed for. New M1 products are still coming out to this day. A couple years ago a new sample card for the M1 came out that gives you a modern amount of memory to work with, and you can load wav files right into from you PC via USB to the card. All kinds of products made their way to the M1 like the Frontal Lobe (I had one), Invision Plus 1 internal board (I have two. Single best add-on) and much more. The M1 wasn't just about the synth, it was about the M1 as a platform the way a PC or Mac is a platform. Without all the 3rd party stuff they wouldn't have been nearly as magical. The greatest hardware in the world is nothing special without tons of great supported products for it, unless your an expert programmer which very few are.

What a pleasure and what (good) surprise that you are talking about Philippe Saisse here. Thank you. This musician is fabulous and unfortunately (maybe) not enough known and listened to. His production from the years 88 to 99 is very rich with original, inventive, elaborate, electric, colorful and very harmonic instrumentals. His first album “Valerian” (1988) is a marvel. The following, as well: “Storyteller” (1991), “Dream Catcher” (1994), “Next Voyage” (1997) or “Half 'til Dawn” (1999). In the 2000s, he instead moved towards more jazz productions ... to my great despair, but he remains for me a very, very BIG musician and producer ... ;-)

I love the Idea of a vintage synth collection, but I made a conscious decision to avoid lusting after the likes of the M1, DX7 or D50, because they could be ported totally intact into a VST or AUv3 plugin. I would assume iM1, on my iPad is literally a port of the original M1 software, except of course I get the added advantage of a giant touch screen to programme it, Not that it isn’t a good looking device, but I had one for a few months in the 90s, and it’s a right bugger to edit things.
@n8goulet
@n8goulet 3 года назад
As a long time owner of the M1 since it came out with tons of updates (two of them), you are 100% correct. I've effectively replaced my M1's, DX7, D50 and many others with VSTs. My M1's sit in storage. iM1 sounds fantastic side by side next to one of my M1's, except the great Invision Plus 1 board that isn't available on the M1 since it required internal rom waves that Korg didn't have the rights to, and can't be loaded via sysex because it requires the wave rom. I did have decent luck sampling the patch from it I use the most into my MODX. I'll probably try some others. I have a dozen vintage synths still besides the ones I replaced, but the future is clear. I'll be scaling back, maybe continue to buy some new ones (like the great MODX) and be replacing my classics with software when the values climb further. Will probably keep one M1 since it meant so much to me for so long. For the past 2 years I've gigged without the M1, but it's really still with me and used plenty as a virtual version. I do need a MIDI controller with aftertouch to get the best use out of iM1, so that's what I do. Works great for plenty of other synths too. The Montage & Kronos sounds don't take advantage of aftertouch nearly to the extent the M1 did, so I can live without that on my MODX. But not on M1 sounds.
