for those of you complaining about the minikeys, the product manager at sweetwater said it the best: music is about the notes you play, not about how far you can stretch your fingers.
This review convinced me the microSTATION would fit well into my home studio. The sound, depth of features, and good build quality of this instrument make this synth a great value.
Just in time for Christmas..... When you consider the size of the keys and the weight of the unit, I could see this being a good starter keyboard for the young, budding synthesist.
This is a tremendous keyboard if you "accept it" as a table top synth with a virtual keyboard attached. Use it as a MIDI slaved 120 voice module with a sequencer and the problem with the mini keys goes away. It's the ideal second keyboard; price, sound, portability and capability can not be beat. Great demo video. Yes! I agree with above comment. Teasing us with that Jupiter 6 laying dormant on the wall. Have mercy. It's practically porno for gear sluts.
Excellent review. The small keys aren't a problem as a full size keyboard can be plugged in via MIDI in. It's best used in conjunction with a computer and a DAW although you can import SMF on the SD card. It's definitely for a home studio especially if you haven't much room. I use mine purely as a sound module in SEQ mode. If you are looking for a live performance synth, then it probably won't be for you.
you didnt disapoint me again the best microstation review globaly i hasitate a bit if it suits my needs but you showed what i need to know . editing sounds seems to be great thru the software and i am pretty sure now i can make it sing my songs
Search and join Google+ 'Korg microSTATION' in communities - I've added this review to the Video section. Also Links to Korg Patches, forums and SoundCloud. I hope people will find this useful.
I know I'm going to sound like an idiot because I'm new to this whole midi thing, but if the size of the keys are a problem for anybody, couldn't you just control it with a midi controller with normal sized keys? Please don't hate me for asking a stupid question!
One thing that I wish Korg would do, instead of manufacturing tiny equipment, is reissue a fully analog synth like the PolySix for example. It would sell like crazy. Polysix Anniversary Edition Korg. Comon!! And don't make it the "Polysix Micro"!
@pmsan29 thanks. i tested it again with my own pro headphones. they sound really good. and the shop also sells official microstation case/backpack. really cute. I can carry it with my motorbike!
Wonderful teach-in -- THANK YOU! Please give us 30 tutorials on this thing - so what if it's 9 years later! I own one and am ordering the Korg Microarranger want to be fluent in both. Please do it -- these are an important moment in electronic instrument history. Feel free to go slower even though your lively delivery is great.
I really like all your reviews on all the various Synths & Workstations. Just wanted to ask are you going to be performing a review on the Korg M50 as well? I just purchased a Korg MicroSTATION and i absolutely love and is also condering the Korg M50
If I connect the USB From Korg Microstation to My Laptop without wearing the Headphones and/or without the Keyboard Amp; is there the sounds from Mcirostation can hear directly from the Laptop speakers ?
As the keyboardist for Neon Kross, I'm the proud owner of one of these amazing instruments...but however I do pose a signifigant question - after saving a bunch of programs and combis, how does one go about rearranging them to reflect a setlist's order?
In sequence mode, it has transpose on each track, but sequence mode or keyboard menu, it's not the same as reaching over and pushing a button without having to leave the place where I can change sounds.
They really missed a trick with this SD card not being allowed to access your own loops and sounds, if you could use samples form the SD card this would be a must have bit of kit for many people.
Would be nice to see a new module with lush warm sparkly pads (which i may add Korg a bloody brilliant at since the 01/w) a reasonable priced rackmount module would be right up my street, i had a look at the Korg X50 rackmount however a more up to date engine would be nice in a new rack-mount from korg.
question, hopefully you can answer this. is there a way so that when playing live, i can change from one preset quickly to another one without having to go searching through my microstation for them?
An octave switch would be nice, but a TRANSPOSE switch would be better. Plus, I have and LOVE this board. BUT I would love it even more if you could create patterns and then chain patterns. That way a I could make intro, chorus, verse, bridge, ending, and put it all together. Still, coupled with a good drum machine(I use the Alesis SR18), you can get around that. and they both work very well together through midi once you get it set up. Per your review, i will play with the computer editor more.
Which gives better synth type sounds - Microstation or X50 - I like the X50 for the look and bigger keys but will I get the same type of synth sounds as the Microstation on the X50?
That's what I am already doing. Copy copy copy copy copy. It's not the same as creating an intro, a verse, a chorus, a bridge, an "A" part or a "B" part. The stringing them together as I see fit. Then being able to go back to those parts and edit it without having to find the measure it's in withing the song.
Hi I'm in a POP punk band, At the moment I use a Korg X50, and a kaossilator pro. Would you reccomend this or the microkorg XL as an addition ?? Anyone help ?
i've been wanting that for far too long, I wouldn't mind them having made 2 (at the most lol) microsynths if they were perhaps similar to the roland gaia, as that would be really useful.
Love your reviews, keep them coming! I have to say that this microstation doesn't impress me too much as far as the way it looks... it looks too much like a cheap radioshack keyboard
probably use a program such as fl studio. this is a synth i dont know how in deapth it goes with sequencing probably jus loops you need to plug the out put into your microjack and use a auido edditing program
I know this video is 11 years old, but does anyone know if the Microstation can respond to mod wheel, pitch wheel, and octave shift messages from an external midi controller? Anyone? . . .
What's the point of turning the back of the instrument towards to audience if you're ignoring half of the parts that are clearly visible? You keep talking about trivial stuff like midi in and out but nothing about the LCD brightness control??
probably not but so what? I think his reviews are becoming less and less useful. All he basically does is getting all excited on specs which you can read on your own on the official manufacturers website, flavored with some so-called deep analysis that even a deaf man could come up with. The mini keys are a bit tricky in the beginning? No sh*t, Sherlock?!
