I was born in 1968 and as a boy the sound of Korg instruments stuck in my mind while listening to the music of those times. Even today when I hear the Korg sound, I melt, because it is unique and always gives weight to every song. Korg is unparalleled.

I have , or have had, most of the major keyboards and voice modules: When it comes to USER INTERFACE, there is nothing to rival the Roland Fantom, however, when it comes down to just the purity of sound, Nautilus is light years ahead of the pack.....there is no describing the sonic greatness of his board, you simply have to hear it yourself, preferably , through headphones where you can really pick up all that has gone into these fantastic sounds. Now: Nautilus has already improved upon the quixotic interface of the Kronos, so , it is definitely a step in the right direction, however, as I said, in terms of just sound quality, it is the standard bearer of the current generation for keyboard players.

My suggestion for next version of Nautilus: I wish Korg made the touch screen a bit bigger. There is so much wasted space on the panel which could be used for a larger touch screen.

Yep, its my main gripe.. it wouldn't of hurt Korgs bottom line much if they had put a bigger touch screen on it, & its not like there isn't the space for that. I have an 88 would of paid an extra £100 - 200 for bigger less fiddly screen.

I agree with some comments below, the lack of knobs and sliders affect the use case of live performance. If you are working with an analog sound and you want to change cutoff and release or anything else, you'll need to pick the control in the touchscreen, then use the "value" control, then pick in the touchscreen the next thing you want to tweak, etc. I think they wanted to do what Apple did with the iphone (get rid of the buttons, focus on the touch screen), but for a workstation to be used live, I don't think it works well. But maybe I'm still stuck in the last decade 🤔🤷‍♂

It has 6 knobs to assign to any parameter you want per patch, so u can add any filter /adsr/ lfo/fx paramater or whatever to a knob and twist. Simple . I mean, if you're one of those 1 finger groove ppl and make a 10 minute performance by constantly fiddling knobs, this ain't what you're looking for. I mean, you still can, but its def more limited

Great video. A PIP of the touchscreen would be nice to be able to actually read the screen. I'm glad you covered the limitation of the arpeggiator. I was hoping I could create custom patterns but I guess you can't. Deal breaker. I just learned it take 3m to boot up and the touchscreen is crappy and a bit on the small size. With that and what I learned on this video, looks like a hard pass on this keyboard. Holding out for the Korg Wavestate SE Full-Size.

Great instrument. Also, I thought Korg would never release anything pleasing aesthetically since the M1, T3, and 01/W. Now they finally did. All electronic instruments sound good. If they don't, it's only the player's fault. But when it comes to actually spending the money, the look and feel is everything.

At the same time though, with this keyboard being more ‘streamlined’ than the Kronos and considering the fact that the Kronos is now discontinued, which quite frankly Korg lied about when they first announced the Nautilus, you can see why some or most people won’t even touch the Nautilus. Looks and feel (to a point) isn’t always everything.
@dvamateur
@dvamateur Год назад
@jordanking7711 I think the Nautilus is one the best Korg products to date. Sure, its antiquated origins from the OASYS PCI card start showing. I mean, using an off-the shelf Intel Atom based consumer grade motherboard is not ideal. I am sure Korg is working on something better, perhaps using custom chip sets, like Roland and Yamaha do. Let's face it, the prolonged boot-up times are not something professional keyboard players want to deal with. Unless it's not a problem to keep the Nautilus powered on at all times, which is certainly a recommended practice for modular analogs. I don't know about the majority (which I don't want to have anything to do with in most cases anyway), but to me personally, the Nautilus is excellent. I wouldn't buy a Kross or Krome, because they simply don't feel or look good. The Nautilus is fine. And the longer I use it, the more sense the user interface design makes. In other words, the instrument is growing on me more and more. And that's a good sign to me. But then again, I am not the majority of Korg users. And as I said before, the majority is not something I want to deal with anyway. When it comes to spending my money, only my personal view really counts.

I owned this keyboard for a month, traded it and a Kawai MP7 for the Roland Fantom - 08.. I thought the Nautilus 88 was going to be different, got a fantastic deal on it with a case, loved the sounds in it, (the ones I created anyway), but it left me empty.. Best part of the nautilus is the Set List feature, I wish all keyboards had that on it.. But all the Korg products, and I've owned a ton of them, didn't interact well with others, ie.. DAWs, modules, or external keyboards.. I started out on Korg, Poly 800, MS10, Korg Vocoder, Polysix, DW8000 with the Angel City Chip, Korg DSG-1, Korg SP200, Korg Triton Studio 76, X2, N264, Prophecy, X50, M50, Kronos 88, Krome 73, OASYS 73, and Nautilus 88..So I am not a Korg hater and I still have a Korg N5sr 1/2 rack module that I use with my current setup.. For live giggin the Nautilus left me flat except for the Set List, the lack of sliders hurt for live performance, the touch and drag screen for adjusting the volume of parts was hard to use and sometimes the sliders on the screen didn't move so parts came in too loud.. The weight was another issue and is only a few pounds lighter than the Kronos, so IMO buy a used Kronos.. The 3 minute boot up time was another major issue as well as the limited memory.. I replaced the hard drive in the OASYS with an SSD drive which helped it boot faster, and I increased the RAM in the Kronos 88 which I ended up trading for a Krome 73 when I was touring, again it was due to the weight of the keyboard.. My favorite Korg keyboards were: X2, Triton, N264, and the M50, IMO these were the best for gigging and for sequencing. especially the Triton and the M50 were both exceptional for sequencing and the sounds in the M50 IMO were better than the Kronos for what I was doing... If you get a deal on a Nautilus 88 as I did for $1000 usd, and only 1 month old, buy it!! And hope you like it better than I liked mine.. The Fantom - 08 is a great replacement and at only 32 pounds is easy on your back, the sounds are very good and free sound libraries are available on the Roland Cloud.. My other boards are Yamaha MODX7, sounds are free from Yamaha and also sounds are available free on SoundMondo.. My 3rd board is a Nord Electro 2 Seventy Three for organ and is currently for sale or trade with the Nord case for a Roland FA-07 if interested and in the Orlando area... Thank you for reading.........

Thank you for sharing your experience, I can't believe any of those sellers .. sorry,...reviewers on youtube never talk about those characteristics, only the bright side. I was hesitating between the Nautilus and the FA 08, but the weight, the boot time and the pads are probably gonna make a huge difference. Too bad because the sounds seem to be a little more interesting on the Korg but maybe I'm wrong. I'm afraid the FA 08 is maybe slightly outdated in this particular area.

@@zaziou711 Look at the newer Fantom 08 if you can afford it. More modern sounds and features, has the pads, and is 10+ years newer than the old FA-08. It’s the “Lite” version of the full-featured 2019 Fantom 8, but it’s still a very capable workhorse! The sequencer on the new Fantoms is disappointing though. I love Korg, Yamaha and Roland equally, but the new Nautilus doesn’t come close to competing with the new Fantom or Montage. It’s embarrassing how much Korg cheaped out on their new “flagship workstation.”
@ErraticFaith
@ErraticFaith Год назад
Nobody claimed Nautilus was the new flagship except inpatient forum crawlers who can't understand what global shortages are and that the new board will likely sit as a 'Kronos 3' when the time comes. If I had to guess it will be far more DAW optimised and make use of the new synth engines they've previewed over the pandemic period. The only shortfall will be the immense price.
@thomjohn98
@thomjohn98 Год назад
@@ErraticFaith I never looked at it as a flagship, but more of a torn down version of the Kronos, cheaper, still heavy (88 was back breaking in a case even with wheels). It does have some improved pianos which sounded great, but not worth the price.. I can do more with my Fantom 08 than I could with the Nautilus.. I bought a Korg Krome EX 88 that is now up for sale, if anyone is interested.. Has great sounds, just doesn't fit in my studio.. Hit me up if interested..

Well actually you don't have to turn the value dial to change knob parameters, such as on the Polysix. You can use it with your finger by dragging. I believe it's system wide touch. For ADSR, yes use the physical knobs on the panel. But for everything else, like screen parameters, you can use the screen by dragging it with your finger either up and down or side to side, depending on the parameter. Also you misspelt Natalie's surname.

I love my 88 key Kronos 2. The downfall is the 11 year old user interface. The Nautilus doesn’t even have aftertouch. I can’t accept it as the new Korg flagship workstation. So . .. I don’t know for sure when the new Korg flagship work station will release, but I hope it’s soon. Right now, I’m actually considering an arranger instead (the Pa5X) instead of the to-be-announced Korg flagship workstation. Will we see it at NAMM 2023? Besides my Kronos, I have aFantom 7 to hold me over, but only for a year or so . . . Otherwise I’ll get the Pa5X
@dvamateur
@dvamateur 2 года назад
It's a bit hard to compare the Pa series instrument to the Kronos or Nautilus. Even the high-end Pa-series instrument, such as the recently introduced Pa5X, seems to be primarily a sample-playback instrument with very rudimentary sound patch editing capabilities. On the other hand, both the Kronos and Nautilus are fully editable instruments, where you can create sounds starting from its basic components, such as a sine wave, for instance. This simple distinction, makes the Kronos and Nautilus fully featured synthesizers, whereas the Pa5X more of a preset instrument. As far as flagship instrument status is concerned, The Pa5X is currently Korg's flagship auto-accompaniment keyboard, whereas the Nautilus is Korg's current flagship digital synthesizer and workstation. Korg used to have a flagship analog synthesizer, in the form of the Korg ARP 2600, but that's no longer the case since the instrument is currently out of production, which I believe the same is true about the Kronos. So, it all depends what you are looking for. If you are into editing and creating your own sounds, the Pa5X would be rather limiting to you, unless you're content with the Pa5X sample-playback patches, but is plenty enough to be fair. But if you're more into synthesis, sound design, and fine control of all synthesizer parameters, i.e. full patch programmability, the Kronos or Nautilus would be the way to go. And if you absolutely need aftertouch, I believe a lot of retailers still have some versions of Kronos or other in stock. To make long story short, you can't fully replace Kronos/Nautilus with a Pa5X. And the opposite is true as well, since the Kronos/Nautilus instruments do not provide as versatile auto-accompaniment facilities as the Korg Pa-series instruments do.
@jordanking7711
@jordanking7711 2 года назад
@@dvamateur Not necessarily. You can edit sounds from scratch on an arranger instrument like the Pa5x. Yes it's different to the Kronos or Nautilus, and yes the Pa5x doesn't have the 9 separate sound engines like on the Kronos or Nautilus, although there ARE sounds on the Pa5x that were brought over from the Nautilus and Kronos, but to say that the Pa5x is a 'preset instrument', is inaccurate. But you are right in that you can't replace a Kronos/Nautilus with a Pa5x and vice versa. At its core, they are fundamentally different.
@jordanking7711
@jordanking7711 2 года назад
@@dvamateur And yes Andrew you are unfortunately right about the Kronos. As far as I'm aware, Korg have discontinued the Kronos/Kronos 2.
@dvamateur
@dvamateur 2 года назад
@@jordanking7711 Well, I went through the PaX5 manual, and as far as sound editing is concerned, I only found filter cutoff, resonance, and not even a full ADSR envelope, just three envelope parameters, such as ADR, or something of that sort. So I'd consider these very rudimentary forms of sound adjustment capabilities. And of course, there nothing even remotely close to FM, or PD synthesis, or wave sequencing to be found on the Pa5X. It's strictly a sample-playback/record based instrument with very basic macro level patch parameter adjustments. Which I find rather surprising, because as far as I remember the Pa1X used to have rather complete synthesizer parameter set, as a subtractive synthesizer. Ditto for the i-series instruments, like the i3/i2/i1 from the early '90s. And off course full blown synthesizer programmability is by no means critical or anything. I mean, one can do professional arrangements on the auto-accompaniment based instrument like the Pa5X, no problem. However, I would not consider the Pa5X a replacement for a Kronos or Nautilus. As a complement, sure. But replacement, I don't think so.

I paid top dollar for Fantom 8 which is supposed to have after touch, but it sucks so badly that when I see Nautilus which doesn't have it I'm like - that's not too bad, I'm now used to not having it in a heavy keyboard. UPDATE AFTER GETTING IT: The board sound wonderfull. But the “workstation” aspect of the keyboard ie sequencer and track pattern sequencer are absolute dogshit 80s level shit. It keeps messing your stuff up on its own without any reason. Fuck sake the motif got it right 20 years ago, how the hell can you fuck it up so bad Korg? All I want to do is record and loop 4 bars of piano, then switch to a bass and add the bass in, then switch to another midi track like a lead sound and layer that on top. Easy peasy. With a 20 year old keyboard I can have that done in about 3 minutes and capture the idea. Korg nautilus? NO! You cant do that. It takes you half an hour just to record 4 bars of piano because it keeps fucking up, keeps playing some shit on top of my playing which I never recorded. In the end you get so frustrated you turn the board off and walk away. Also I have zero idea how to make it work since there is no video on youtube on it. Terrible, terrible job Korg if I knew this I would have never bought it. As I said, keyboards knew how to do this right and intuitively 20 years ago.

Korg should have done a true Kronos replacement/update like they were planning before they cheaped/chickened out. I’ll save my money and just stick with my Kronos 2 88 and my Yamaha Montage until Korg pulls their head out of their ass. The general public will do the same if they’re smart too. Shame on you, Korg!
