7 years past and my family & I discovered a new Aaron Ehasz Project, The Dragon Prince. And while it's characters and plot are great, It still has a lot to learn before it's ready to be the next ATLA. But I believe, Dragon Prince will save the world. (Or something)

Or did you miss the part of the retcon where the same writers responsible for Korra's decision to leave the portals open also showed that humans had to build their cities on the shells of lion turles to avoid being persecuted by malevolent spirits the humans had no defense against? The spirit and material worlds have more reason to be seperate entities rather than being merged. Its perfectly fair game for someone to call Korra out for the downsides of her unilateral decision that effect everyone, i dont care that a politician is using it for his own gain, hes not wrong, Korra is.

@@joeldykman7591This is what the characters in the show argued, and I think it’s a more complicated issue and was actually pretty close to a compelling issue (if they did it well, which they didn’t) because there’s definitely an argument to be made that temporarily uprooting some people’s lives is an understandable side effect of uniting two kinds of sentient beings and allowing them to both live in and interact with each other’s worlds. If you don’t do that, these two will just avoid their issues with each other, instead of confronting and growing each other. If only LoK actually tried to show this, then it might be easier to see that side of the argument.

I was thinking about that as well. My interpretation (and personal head cannon) is that although HER connection to the past avatars is gone, they weren't actually killed off. She, for whatever reason, just couldn't access them anymore, and because they were never really gone, she can still go into the avatar state. I also like this theory because it allows me to believe that the next avatars will still get to speak to their past lives, and that this is just one of the many ways in which Korra was a failure.

Ravaa itself allows avatar state. Every time the avatar dies avatar state becomes stronger, because there is more knowledge. But raw power stays the same, so naturally when she lost the connection to the past avatars she would only lose the knowledge in avatar state

The end game was spiritual enlightenment that’s the whole goal like with Aang it was mastering the physical side of being the avatar but with Korra it’s the spiritual side. Over the season you can see Korra being less hot headed and trying to resolve things like Aang would finding the common denominator and creating peace like she did 4 times through the series

People DO want strong female characters. It's called Katara and Toph...not these wokism "feminist" so called "strong women" who ironically take the WORST aspects of masculinity and amplify them. i completely agree with u except the last part. eliminating the past lives was the end of an era. 10 000 years later raava was reborn stronger and more powerful. i thought it was poetic. also the idea of the past avatars helping and being there for the avater is great and all but if you've seen the show and read the comics, you know they didnt do jack shit. they couldnt even help aang in his fight with ozai. they were there for the world building and mystic aspect of the show, not adding actual value to the avatar or the show. i think youll survive

@@marcusaurelius4777 a couple years after TLOK every single piece of media was suddenly about an all powerful girl boss Rey from star wars for example, gets almost no training and is able to do things that the chosen one(anakin) couldnt do, and whats even funnier is that the thing that Rey was able to do that Anakin couldnt, is literally the reason star wars has a story that is because Anakin turned to the dark side to protect his wife from dying, would have been great if Anakin could have just took a hint from Rey and force healed everyone he ever loved another good example is captain marvel, for some reason she gets 1 movie out of nowhere that not only weakens Nick Fury but makes every other problem the Avengers had with Thanos seem like it shouldn't have ever happened, cause shes more powerful than every character we knew of before

The retroactive "it's a new era now, there will be another 10,000 years of past lives in another cycle" is more insulting (and gaslighting) in my opinion. Honestly if they just had one season where Korra was a young brat having to deal with the geopolitical aftermath of the fire nation colonies and earth kingdom collapse/Kuvira rise it would have been quite good. Unfortunately they bit off way way way more than they could chew.

They may not had found something darker than genocide but they did find themes darker that ATLA could never touch such as torturing the protag to the point they have PSTD and depression

Doesnt need to be darker. Needs to be just as interesting. They couldv expanded on the Dai Li and made the earth kingdom some oppressive communist controlled country. Couldv had a Cold War ahh plot line between the fire nation and the Earth Kingdom.

I'll even go so far as to say that in ATLA, Bending was never framed as *magic.* You don't cast magic spells that make fire come forth, you (unknowingly) emulate the way a dragon breathes fire and the world, being spiritual, lends you the power just as it lends them theirs. Bending doesn't come from the inside, that's _why_ it's called "bending". You're not 'conjuring' or 'evoking', you're _bending_ the natural world. This goes further with things like lightningbending, which involves emulating different parts of the natural world - the way lightning flows through conductors, the way the clouds generate it in a thunderstorm. The way the show explains where it comes from is especially significant for waterbending, because we know why the Tides happen - they're caused by gravity pulling on the water. But the people of this world don't. They see that the moon is on the horizon and that the water is gone, and they see that the moon is behind them and the water is close. To them, and therefore the spiritual world, there is no difference between the way the moon pulls and pushes the oceans and the way a dragon breathes fire, which is why waterbending works as it does. Then LoK came along and turned bending into magic granted by lion turtles

@@JRexRegis yes, you can even listen to toph in og atla saying something reallt nice to this effect, when she talks about how bending and learning it (in her case from badgermoles)it's a way of interacting with the world and seeing it, rather than straight up a fighting tool. Which is also much more balanced, natural and interesting.

honestly anything they would've done to "explain" the avatar and bending would've probably fallen flat for me, even if it was written better. having this ancient world with spirits who have been here since "the beginning" is so mysterious and freaking cool that any explanation kinda ruins it. i like how we learn the lore and history of the world alongside the characters, being told through stories that have been passed down and paintings on walls, it feels more organic than a random 2-episode flashback in a different art style. i like how even past avatars don't know everything, they aren't given unimaginable strength and knowledge, what they can do is limited by what they learned in their lifetime and nobody can just answer all their questions, even once they've passed. it's like how showing the monster in a horror movie makes it less scary. leaving things to and beyond the imagination of the viewer is just more satisfying somehow.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. It seemed so disrespectful that they had common people using lightining bending in a factory. Even more disrespectful that they gave Mako one of the worst characters lighting bending when Zuko couldn't even do it. Lightining bending is suppose to be legendary where only masters and mostly the royal family are able to do it. Not anyone who has had no training

I agree with all of this and I want to add one point: bending styles. LoK lost the whole martial arts background for the _majority_ of benders. Watch any character from Atla, especially Toph, and then suffer thru the lack thereof in the supposed sequel.

You know, maybe all those ideas would have been cool if it were well written! Cause a sequel needs to be an expansion right, and all those things are an exploration of touched ideas in ATLA, but its used in a way that makes it so unsatisfying in LoK

If we think about the past lives especially in atla, the storg function was mainly for expository dialogue explaining what aang needed to accomplish, how the avatar state works and other things surrounding it and history and backstory. They were there more for the viewers to understand with aang the situation is in. They were very cool and essential parts of atla, but in terms of advice we only see that in filler episodes which mean nothing and on the lion turtle. And the result of that wasn't super important to the end of the story. Like when iroh met korra in the spirit world that essentially functioned as an avatar past life, or when she meets old zuko or toph. It seems like the anger associated with the decision is mainly around the fact we didn't see adult aang do shit, which is unfortunate but again is mainly for fanservice as other people can play the role of a past life. Like if aang just wasn't there as a past life to talk to, I doubt there would be as bad of a hate for it

It would also be cool if there was a cold war scenario. Everybody was traumatized by the 100 year war so didn't want war. The world couldv been split into two parts. The earth kingdom ran by the Dai Li being oppressive and the communist side of the wall, while the fire nation being the western side. Would be a really cool mechanic.

Mako is a very moral person despite his upbringing. Even when he ran with gangs, he stuck to accounting and told his brother to not get involved with them. The few instances we see mako interacting with the gangs, he used them for their assets even if he didn't trust them fully, like in book 2 when making a sting operation for Asami. The police wouldn't budge so he tried to help her any way he could. For a 17 year old kid, he has some sturdy beliefs he sticks to.

You are biased, there is no hatred here. Ill explain it for you, if you choose to read this and disagree, then you literally can't accept that TLOK is a bad show and so are the characters in it. Ill try to keep it short. Mako, what does he do? what are his ambitions? We don't know. Bolin, what does he do? what are his ambitions? He wants to learn metal bending, does he accomplish this? No, does he become able to lava bend without any training? Yes. Asami, what does she do? what are her ambitions? She wants to redeem the honor of her family's name after her father was evil. Does she accomplish this? Yes, except it's off screen and has no consequence to the story. Now let's look at the Gaang, I won't even mention Zuko, you could remove every frame of ATLA without Zuko and it would still be a better story than every arc in TLOK combined. I'm gonna be fair and focus on Katara, Sokka, and Toph Katara, what does she do? what are her ambitions? She wants to learn to water bend, and she wants to avenge her mom. Lets look at how she learned to water bend cause it's seriously one of the best arcs in ATLA. The problem is that she doesn't have a water bending teacher, so she travels the world with Aang, she is able to learn water bending *on her own* up to a certain point. But guess what, when she solves the problem of finding a water bending teacher, she has another problem, that teacher won't teach her. How does she go about solving this? She fights a fight she knows she will lose, Katara is brave enough to fight against hundreds of years of tradition in the face of a master water bender. No one helps her, Aang tries to of course, but Pakku has no desire to sacrifice his tradition in order to teach Aang. And remember, Katara does this herself, do you remember what she tells Aang right before she fights Pakku? She says "I'm not doing this for you." Bravo, I want to give a standing ovation. This is how you write a character. She has a goal that is independent from anyone else. Once Pakku has a small arc of his own by remembering that he lost his fiance to these same traditions, he teaches Katara. Katara then goes on to become the best student he has, this arc also extends to the last episode. Katara improves her water bending, continually, until the end of the series. She is able to defeat Azula, someone who technically killed the main character, Aang. Imagine that, an arc that extends from start to finish, in the background, independent of anyone else, and without any hand holding. I seriously cannot see an arc that exists in Korra that even ticks 2 of those boxes. I know this is getting long, my fingers hurt. Anyway Lets talk about Sokka, what does he do? what are his ambitions? He wants to become a man, when the men of his village left, he couldn't go with them. By consequence this means he wants to be useful, to his family, and to his tribe. Interestingly enough, Sokka starts his arc with a character flaw. His definition of a warrior is exclusively a man. If he holds onto this definition then he will never go forward. He is sexist. His arc is pretty good, it's not just 1 dimensional, and his path to become a man is not just his ability to fight. He learns that sexism is wrong, you don't need to be a man to be a warrior. Suki is the one who teaches him that. He loses in a mock fight against Suki extremely fast. He offers usefulness in his intellect. He plans the invasion, he helps the mechanist to invent things, he starts the plan to destroy the drill. Many many other bad situations the Gaang has been in, are ones he has solved through his intellect. He truly does become a man during the solar eclipse, when his father is injured during battle. He takes command and is able to lead the troops. By the end of the show he manages to defeat an entire fleet of airships with an idea. And guess what, he does this with 2 strong independent women at his side. Bravo, another standing ovation. He also offers usefulness in battle when he learns swordsmanship from Piandao. During the Boiling Rock, Sokka is fighting Azula with Zuko, he is actively making her dodge and retreat. Let that sink in. Sokka was the guy who was defeated by Zuko with 2 kicks in about 1 second during S1 episode 2. By the end of the show Sokka is fighting one of the most skilled villains in the show on even ground. *BRAVO, STANDING OVATION* This is how you write strong characters in an intricate story. Even when I'm writing what I already know, I'm still having my 1000th realization of how good ATLA is. I'm a dude and the characters I look up to the most in this show are the women like Toph and Katara. Lets talk about Toph. What does she do, and what are her ambitions? She wants to explore the world, she is strong and independent despite her being blind. Now I'll admit I'm struggling to think of a way to write about her arc. I know it's there but I'll be honest, Toph is such a dang *badass* that she doesn't actually need to do much. Her arc concerning her parents is mostly in the comics. Toph accomplishes her ambition throughout the show by exploring the world with the Gaang. Toph was a blind girl who learned to earth bend from the badgermoles, eventually explores the world with the avatar, teaches him how to earth bend, invents metal bending, takes her title as *the best earth bender in the world.* She does have an arc about her relationship with the Gaang. At first she doesn't like to help the Gaang, shes a little too independent. Iroh does have a talk with her, but her issues with Katara's bossiness extends to the 3rd season when Toph is scamming the scam artists. Toph and Katara talk it out and then go have 1 last scam, except they get locked in jail together. This next part about Toph isn't really an arc but more like a component of her character. It's in the Tales of Ba Sing Se episode. Toph hangs out with Katara for a day doing girly things, and we all know Toph is a tomboy. When they encounter some other girls in the city, they make fun of Toph. Toph says that she doesn't care about how she looks, Toph says *"I know who I am"* That's probably my top 10 quotes from ATLA. Katara then says she thinks Toph is pretty and she admires how strong Toph's mindset is. What a good scene, so many other shows fall victim to the idea that female characters only exist to have crushes on the male ones. That's just wrong, ATLA just made a scene about two girls having a day out and it's one of the strongest character moments in ATLA. One last standing ovation BRAVO. Anyway I hope that stops the arguments about which show has better characters. I could have wrote about any of the other characters, Aang, Zuko, Mai, Iroh, Azula, Ty Lee, Suki, the list goes on. It would take way too long to write about them but I've just thought about each of those characters and the complexity they have trumps every character in TLOK. So yeah, the themes, characters, and plot is all written better. By a huge margin. If you read thanks, if you didn't I don't blame you. Just don't reply to me saying I'm wrong if you didn't read.

I kinda forgot to write about Katara's avenging her mother arc but that all took too long to write and I'm sure you can understand yourself how that arc is more mature and thought out than anything TLOK had to offer. Actually Toph does have an arc in that scene. In her introduction episode, she doesn't reveal to her parents that she is independent, because being blind doesn't stop her. But because she can't confront them she runs away. The fact that she says "I know who I am" proves she has changed. She has self-confidence.

@@skull1161everything you wrote here was on point. Everyone’s personality lines up with their goals, and their goals were independent of anyone else, but they were also plot relevant. Extremely plot relevant. We never learned anything about Mako or Bolin’s goals. What ever those were. Bolin wanted to learn metalbending. Why are we just hearing about that in the fourth season??? Mako becoming a cop was only relevant to season 2 (the worst season imo), and it’s barely ever brought up again. It’s like the characters in LOK just do things and then move onto the next thing. None of it has any connections to any over arching plots or character arcs. It’s all just a big bucket of blah. We barely know anything of their backstories besides a few details here and there, nothing of the backstories adding much to their characters. Okay Mako’s parents died, which means he had to fend for himself and his brother. He’s very overprotective as a result and is a workaholic. Good. This doesn’t lead to anything tho. We barely see any character arc as a result of that. It would have made sense if he was overbearing at first, and didn’t believe his brother could do much and always needed to be protected, but later ended up seeing that Bolin was actually very capable, and stopped being overbearing. Likewise, Bolin could have been someone that had to rely on Mako throughout, and he’s learning to be more dependent. He’s not good at first, but he tries, and he sees that without his brother being overbearing, he actually thrives, and discovers he’s really talented. This ends up being relevant in some final battle where all their skills and character growth accumulates. Idk I’m just throwing these ideas out there. A more competent writer could probably come up with something better, but I would have liked if LOK’s team avatar weren’t so boring that I could easily replace them with side characters. Also Asami. Idk. Anything could have been better than what we got. She had so much potential, but over half of her screen time was full of boy drama and terribly written love triangles. LOK fails the bechdel test from s1-s3. So she’s a rich girl but also a non bender. She could start out just being privileged and somewhat naive, but after meeting Korra, Mako and Bolin, she learns more about the state of the world and how the conflict between benders and non benders creates an oppressive system. This would make her sympathize with the equalist movement. There could be a conflict where she’s at odds with Korra because she sees Amon has a point despite being an extremist. Instead of stupid boy drama, they could fight over actual political conflicts that affect the state of the world. They could be narrative foils that end up seeing eye to eye and forming an interest from there. Kind of like a bootleg Zuko. (Or any well written enemies to friends to lovers arc that exists). Idk. Anything to be relevant to the plot of the story. Anything that could point to a character arc would have been good. But instead all we got was nothing and even more nothing. (At least s3 wasn’t bad. I’ll give it that)

@@AnnthemofArt haha thanks, when I wrote this I was just coming off of a rewatch of both ATLA and TLOK and I sort of realized as soon as TLOK got into the later episodes of season 1 I was just feeling disappointed. I mean I get that ATLA was a masterpiece and it's unfair to compare it to TLOK. But there are so many issues in TLOK that could have been solved by any number of the ideas that you threw out in your comment. I think ATLA is known for many things it did well, but one of them is definitely the complexity of every character. I mean even the most insignificant characters show up again to finish an arc of their own. Like Haru and his father Tyro, or the swamp benders, or the mechanist. I look at TLOK and even the most involved characters get almost nothing for their arcs. I honestly don't know what happened to the writing for TLOK. One can only guess honestly, pressure from nickelodeon? Maybe they just didn't have enough time to brainstorm TLOK, when you consider that ATLA had about every episode and season completely thought out before it even aired. Could also be that Aaron Ehasz didn't come back, he was the head writer after all. Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino were still there but maybe losing the head writer was the reason. Probably all these problems combined. Still a show worthy of rewatching but I'm still gonna want to skip almost all of season 1 and 2 when in ATLA I only skip a small number of episodes.

They also wrote a lot of episodes of ATLA - ones you probably loved - and most of the other writers returned. J/S, I see a lot of shade thrown at the guys for LOK, when they had a big hand in making ATLA what it was. Not saying Ehasz didn't have great ideas, mind you.

E;R highlighted this already: Mike and Bryan even in TLOK had some good ideas. Emphasis on ''some''. The issue is that because they were now the sole writers, all of their ideas were put into the show unchecked. As a writer myself, I know how that can fuck your consistency. I'm extremely cautious, yet even I have had times where it took proof readers to ask me a question I just never would've thought of upon encountering some form of failed consistency that I never noticed was there. What I assume happened is that Bryke had both more motivation (you can tell by their commitment to the show, how they were doing the dances and many of the animations themselves so as to show their animators what they wanted) as well as somebody to filter out the bad and only allow the good during ATLA. For Korra it was all business, and they just showed up, threw whatever came to mind into it, and then shipped it.

Well korra opposite was air since its tied down to her personality. Took Aang less then 12 years to master air, and less then a year to be proficient in the other elements and master water. Also, LOK antagonists might seem to be more complex and interesting than Ozai and Zhao at first but in my opinion, LOK FAILED and WASTED their villains. Ironic how LOK villains really do work well at the start but then at the end, they just sort of lose everything compelling and interesting about them and become just another Ozai or a stereotypical villain anyway. It's just so funny to me. Amon is a good one and he's an effective villain when he's still a mystery and more like a symbol of fear to Korra then they gave us that absurd backstory of his and I immediately stop taking him seriously. Zaheer is one dedicated and determined guy. He's a good antagonist and his team is awesome 😂 I'll say his team i more interesting team than Korra's. But his goal, world in chaos blah blah, not a great one lol. And Kuvira, well she's just fixing someone else's mess and that mecha robot battle will always look childish to me. Bloodbending was still used by the best waterbenders. The only reason about lightningbending and metalbending being common is, because 1) Ozai didnt want anyone other than the royal family to know about lightningbending, because it’s their powerful family secret, so after they beated Ozai this knowledge would be common 2) metalbending was just discovered and only in comics Toph started teaching it

"It had so much potencial" pretty much sums up the enormity of my desappointment with Legend of Korra. All four books began so well, such good, interesting premises. And then, they sucked. All that potencial, wasted on a rushed, contrived, unispired ending. That hurts more than if it was bad all around.

Not having a single overarching goal/conflict for the whole series I think very much weakened it.

Honestly, you hit the nail on the head. On its own, its....a mediocre "okay" show, nothing amazing. As a sequel, it's pretty bad. It starts off weak, gets better later on, but doesn't hit anywhere near the first show did.

I'll be honest, I was a little bit outside of the main demog for Avatar (couple years too old for the ads to appeal/exposed to other better stuff already at that point) but as a fan of martial arts and stories with good world building, I at least respected ATLA. Korra was one of many shows that were part of the unfortunate combination of incompetent writing and the beginning of the ramp up of the culture war we're currently in. The most frustrating thing is, as a guy who's an ethic minority, I understand that it feels good to have "representation" but there's a difference between representation and pandering but the average person can't tell the difference. Additionally, the over obsession of needing to see yourself in the character can loop right back around into narcissism. A character like Korra who excels at everything just because and if you question it you're sexist is a slap in the face to women and dilutes ideals of what the first couple waves of feminism fought for. And the mark of a poor writer is when they can't elevate the character being "represented" without denigrating the other characters perceived as the "opposite" or making them all incompetent/cannon fodder/punching bag/etc. Also, and this one might be a bit of a niche criticism but one I definitely saw often enough to notice -- are the people who loved the show cause it " looked like an anime without all the 'weird stuff'".

Ikr it's like the creators didn't do ANY research about how political ideology is formed and how it manifests in government. Kuvira was supposed to be a fascist, but they didn't portray the ideology as a cultural one, but as a single-minded individual just being evil. In Avatar they DID show us how the fascist ideology affects the rest of the Fire Nation society, like when Aang went to school and saw first hand how the nation tries to rewrite and erase it's own history. That's just one example but it does way more than Korra ever did.

@@Sqwivig Kuvira was a controversial leader mirroring a combo of Chinese warlords and ethnonationalist and fascist movements like Nazi Germany, Maoist China, Nationalist Spain, Khmer Rouge, etc. She was a brutal warlord who wasn't beloved or convincing the people with a strong ideology, just a charismatic enforcer exploiting the collapse of her homeland. This is accurate to how China was throughout history and indeed how many fascist movements arise. Mussolini didn't rally the majority, his blackshirts took over and the masses tolerated it, oftentimes too poor and uneducated to waste their time with things like "morals" and "geopolitics" right up until they realized their home was burning from Allied bombing raids, and the fear of the blackshirts and contentedness with the status quo was outgrown by fear of the constant bombings and Allied troops marching closer to Rome.

So many villains get defeated by force without their ideology being defeated by that of the heroes. Take Thanos in Endgame. He loses in the end but his neo-Malthusian ideology is never defeated. There's very little pushback against it even in Infinity War. The heroes fight Thanos because "killing people is bad," but nobody challenges his claim. They only challenge his belief that HE should be the one to do it.

Honestly, I actually liked that. They needed to lean into it with her being a prodigy and basically a perfect Ivy League college student hitting the real world and getting laid low by it. It really made loosing her bending mean something. Then the writers totally squandered it. Korra could have been as great if not greater the ATLA. Better Call Saul is better than Breaking Bad and Korra had the set up to do that.

Its actually explained lowkey. Firebending is the expression of energy. The Fire Nation was ambitious, and most of the times back then, ambition was an energy just thrown into military endeavours. Nothing else. Nowadays we have nukes, so our ambition is thrown into scientific/economic competition rather than just military. The Fire Nation was shown to be full of incredibly ambitious people who knew no better.

The structure of this show is really a joke. They effectively use Aang as a "fix this nonsense"-button for all the complicated stuff in the first two seasons(Giving backstories, giving Korra the avatar state and reversing her chiblock, resolving Tenzin's character conflict) and then delete him alongside the past avatars to force themselves to stop relying on the dude. I have rarely seen a narrative throughline being so bootleg that the writers have to flip the table or else they can't help themselves.

Would have been extremely if people, who want to live like air benders, gained bending by living this lifestyle with full commitment and for a long period of time. Even though there are air benders in TLOK there are no real air nomads and they will never come back ....

Honestly, I love to see characters who are dual benders and able to do two different elements depends on what their parents abilities are tbh, also introduce multi-benders who the Avatar originally originated from or something like, multi-benders are similar to the Avatar but don't have that important aspect that can make them or considered them as an Avatar and making the Avatar unique and separate from multi-benders tbh, so yeah

Yeah, they kind of tacitly downplayed a literal genocide by going "no it's fine now they're back". Like, the Air Nomads were all killed, murdered by the Fire Nation. They didn't hide or run, they were systematically wiped out by a fascist dictatorship who saw them as a threat to their power. You know what would've been incredible? If it turned out that by the time of Korra, the elements had spiritually shifted, removing Air from the roster and instead expanding the other three. No more air means that each of the other three can expand into the space it no longer occupies - becoming broader, more nuanced, but also less defined by their base element. Show that the genocide had a real impact onto the world, that it left not just a physical scar in the form of an entire culture going extinct, but also a spiritual one in the form of the other styles growing more fluid and spirits aligned with Air becoming erratic and dangerous.

@@bradwhite5884 with how shitty the background and explanation for the avatar is in korra, there wouldn't be much difference at all from a simple multibender than the avatar lol. and at that point honestly i would take plain multibenders over the butchered spirit world of korra. if they just wanted to show a powerful bender, just do so, ditch the spirit world completely, make it so the avatar is a forgotten concept in an unkown state of existance, maybe myth maybe not, and just move on to powerful bender of the current day lol. (of course it would be a vapid idea and a show about power creep, but at least it would be honest and straight to the point)

This is because of perspective- For example I see all the time, just video essays defending lok, but you may see just the opposite. This is based in that, and it is also why when someone uses the word "overrated" or "underrated" I rather think of it being true from their perspective, and that does not mean it is the same in mine. I understand, that we should do our research, and actually check if it's true, but at the same time I don't really mind it, a lot of people put what happen way out of proportions in their titles just to make a video look interesting look no further then story-telling.

@@maadtee6281 Katara was also a waterbender prodigy, note how she changed from being overshadowed by Aang in act 1 to being his waterbending master throughout the rest of the show. The reason why she learnt how to blood bend in "just a day" is because she was a much stronger bender and understood the technique much quicker, she just didn't like using it on others before Hama forced her hand. Katara is established as a smart, quick-witted girl, it is not out of character nor breaking the show's rules for Katara to understand how bloodbending works once she's told it exists. What _does_ break the show's rules however is Korra somehow finding out she is the Avatar before anyone else, and also understanding the basics of firebending, earthbending and waterbending from form to technique without ever having seen a single master at the age of 5.

@@QuiteSpiffing because aang wasn't so serious about it. The show literally shows he was slacking off while katara went from noob to master in 30 days. Amon and his brothers are also smart and quick witted even they couldn't master blood bending in less then a day. So it's believable for Katara to become master with little time, aang to be close to master in earth and fire and being master in water when he literally had less then a year of training while he was also in the run But a girl learning from watching how others bend seems impossible.

the spirits weren't glorified pokemon and they introduced some new interesting designs that I liked. the avatar state is composed of two halves. stick with me cause this will be long, since all of the avatars live in raava and raava resides in the avatar(current) activating the avatar state gives you connection to all of them giving you their skills and wisdom as well as their experience. raava herself is a very powerful spirit as we see in beginnings and her power is what allows an avatar in AS to do larges scale and amazing things. also we never see dark spirits in atla and as unalaq put it "there is no good or bad spirit there is light and darkness in them all" just cause we dont see them doesn't mean they don't exist. and lastly, korra never cheapened the magic system, it followed it in almost ever way while also expanding it without changing anything.

do they? It has a current “Tomatometer” of 89% and an audience score of 79% on rotten tomatos and a score of 8.3 on IMDB…. wayyyyyyy too high in my books. I tried watching, HATED it, but then saw all these people raving over later parts of the show and how great Korra is (I was not searching, it just always appeared on my pinterest feed and youtube recommendations), so I gave it another chance and forced myself to keep going into season two to get to the parts people seemed to love, where I finally allowed myself to give up again after a battle of giants with laser beams. So I did feel that it was getting a lot of positive feedback at the beginning.

i disagree, i actually think all of the villains (except for all of the villains in season 2, season 2 as a whole kinda sucked) were done very well, especially the red lotus and amon, in fact, i'd say the red lotus is one of the best villains so far in the franchise.

That's a damn good point. Despite how big bending is in the world, there were still plenty of swordsmen, archers, martial artists, and bounty hunters that were celebrated for their raw skill. There were plenty of non-benders that succeeded with no sign of prejudice against them. The only example in ATLA I can remember is Zuko being shamed for being pretty basic firebender, but that was only because more was expected of the Fire Prince. Fast forward to the post-war industrial world, there is suddenly this moronic divide between benders and non-benders. This doesn't track in a world with modern industry where these gifts would be less important than ever before. There were never any caste systems in place that revolved around bending. There were only a couple isolated incidents of street criminals abusing people. Looking back, the conflict just seemed very artificial and seemingly ripped from the pages of a bad X-Men fanfic.

Speaking about Sokka, he was the head of republic's city council I have to assume not that long before Korra started. And he's a non bender. This alone is a contradiction with the non benders feeling marginalized the show never addresses

Yep, it think that they were hoping that the real world would do the heavy lifting. In America there is a constant, neverending chanting about social inequalities, so for a kids TV show to cry social inequalities without bothering to even show them implies that they figured people would just project their real world view into the show to justify it. LoK doesn't show the benders being oppressive towards non benders in particular, they just hope you go along with the familiar narrative and apply the same over reaching real world narratives into a kids show.

Honestly, it was such a great potential for a complicated story. I mean, let's look at it realistically, if bending was real, there would be a massive advantage for all benders in both employment and everyday life. There is no job that a non-bender would do better than a bender and many jobs that a bender would do 100 times better. Why hire a team of builders when you can have a couple of earth benders build you a house in a few hours, all from solid stone? And benders don't have any disadvantages from being benders, they are just default better. And I am not even mentioning the capabilities of a common bender to commit violence compared to a common normie. These could make for ligitimate points, they wouldn't even have to make equalists into generic evilguys led by a bender pretending to be a nonbender, but they ended up making benders look opressed by the unfair prejudice from equalists and their supporters and just forgot about all the talks of inequality by the end.

korra was a fun show to watch. people just like to be too critical for nitpicky things. somethings are understandable. but then you have people complaining about how Korra was able to use Avatar State after losing her past lives. The answer to why she can still use the Avatar State is obvious. Think back to Avatar Wans episode. Did he have past lives? No. He only had ravaa. yet he went into the avatar state in his battle with Vatuu. So the Avatar State is still triggered by the Light Spirit Ravaa. Sure, the Avatar State gives you access to your past lives, but its actually activated by Ravaa's light spirit and the light spirit in itself is a massive strength boost. Wan used Avatar state with no past lives. So yeah. But anyways, people like to complain about many things in the show but people really gotta think about the current society Korra lives in lol. Its not the "good ol days" its not olden times. Its not the dinosaur age. Lightning bending, a once rare skill, is going to become less rare naturally. Metalbending is too. If you have an incredible skill, you're probably going to teach it to a few people and one or two of those few people might spread the skill along. Plus metal bending and lightning bending heavily impacted Republic City for the better. Many people dont like the writers desicions in areas like Korra skill in bending and such or how quick she developed. She knew 3 out of 4 elements as a kid but thats not really a crazy thing. She had all the write qualities for the 3 elements she knew. She had passion and a hot temper for fire. She had natural waterbending blood through having a Waterbending father. And she was a very stubborn kid which attributes to earthbending. So its not surprising that she naturally grasped those bending arts. But she still needed to master them. She mastered Firebending at 17 years old. yet she knew firebending as a toddler. So she still had a lot of work to do in terms of advancement so people really shouldnt be complaining about how everything was just handed to her. She had to work to master waterbending, earthbending, and firebending by the age of 17. And no. Aang never mastered all of the bending arts by the ATLA series. He only mastered air and he semi-mastered water bending. I wouldn't say he completely mastered waterbending considering his inability to use the large pool around him in his fight with Ozai to wreck Ozai. Bro fell into a bunch of water and didnt do a water vortex? or a huge wave? Yeah, bro isnt a master water bender. A master would take advantage of being in the middle of an element that they are extremely skilled with. I think Aang was the closest to mastering water though rather than the other elements apart from Air which he obviously mastered.

Korra is a sequel series to Avatar, yet it breaks almost every single aspect of the universe it’s placed in. If it was a standalone series, a lot of the worst writing problems would disappear, but it isn’t.

@@mynameisntjoe3024 Not particularly. Korra is the classic example, in fact probably the best example, of a character to whom a story happens to rather than actually having her engage with it. I honestly don't subscribe to the common criticism that she's a Mary Sue that the writers love, because on the contrary, I've never seen writers so consistently and repeatedly set up a character to fail and engineer a character to be insufferable and unlikeable. The problem is that this is never in service of anything. It just happens because that's how the writers THINK a character arc works. Every season excluding the 4th begins with a Korra devoid of respect for those around her, her own abilities and even herself. The final season is a desperate handicap meant to force an arc upon her, but actually manages to be worse than anything the show did prior, somehow, because the writers knew absolutely nothing about how a subject matter as complicated and delicate as PTSD and tried to do it anyway. The worst part about that is that the only reason you would ever do that is to force Korra through some sort of crucible in order to call it development, because every single previous attempt failed because the writers were writing a reactive story with the intention of being "mature" instead of a proactive one with the intention of telling a story worth telling. The result is a contradictory mess of a show starring a character who exclusively stumbles into change caused exclusively by other people. How do you know this show is contradictory? Because Korra is the most proactive character in the cast yet in 4 seasons the ONLY thing that she does to change the status quo is running away to Republic City in the pilot. Amon's exposure? Korra accidentally did that. Restoring the bending Amon took? Aang did that. Opening the spirit portals? Unalok did that. Destroying the Avatar cycle (bad changes are still changes). Unalok did that. Earth kingdom destabilization? Zaheer did that. Her PTSD? Zaheer did that. Earth Empire? Kuvira did that. Third Spirit Portal? Kuvira accidentally did that via her superweapon and Korra was just the catalyst. Aang begun the series without the skills or the maturity to defeat the Firelord and end the war. By the series end, that is exactly what he does. He doesn't stumble into it, he chose to act and came out the other end victorious, thanks to the culmination of all of his past experiences. Korra never gets this. And even if she had, I'm not convinced the writers would have even gotten the point of why this is important. Thank goodness this show ended when it did.

It makes sense that she has trouble learning air bending since the air nomads were killed by Sozen killed all the air benders and Aang might have been a master air bender but he can't apart the whole amount of training I'd imagine since he didn't just train under just monk Geotso he learned under many air bending masters Tensense training only had Aang. Also, Kora was made to be a prodigy at such a young age then it just skips to the future where she's learning proper fire bending and how to use it in combat. The point is don't show the main character at a young age showing they have a grasp on three of the four elements they're supposed to learn from masters about the basics. Not just make the MC a gifted bender in three of four since the Air Benders were all killed.

@@donney3389 Cause Korra's story starts at a different time than Aang's it's rlly that simple, Korra's story isn't supposed to be spent watching her master the 4 elements, if u just wanna see that again go watch ATLA, she struggles with in season 1 and the other seasons are about different problems ATLA has a very direct story, "master the elements to beat the firelord", that isn't what Korra is, there's no main powerful final big bad like in ATLA or a time limit (sozins comet) so we have no need to watch her master each element

I'm just pointing out the inconsistency that I've noticed within the shows and having the elemental powers make sense if they hadn't shown Korra at a young age already showing a level of control over elements she shouldn't have much control over... if they hadn't shown that and started with the sparing scene then I wouldn't be gripping about it since it wasn't shown at a young age they could've alluded her struggles when learning ari bending or when practicing. Instead, they make her a prodigy, and no real growth other than her PTSD after season 3.

In the avatar state he literally pushed back an whole army in the water nation, almost killed people til he caught himself and defeated a super powered firelord. Many of those before he even mastered all the elements. Korra consistently was losing fights to simple benders while she was suppose to be in the avatar state. Not to mention only avatars were suppose to have to ability to learn multiple bending styles, now because you try hard enough you can learn new styles. Lava bending, what the hell was that!

I can agree with that. I mean I also have a dilemma with Boruto. But it's just. A good entertainment, both of them is. And I mean by that is to actually ignore the lore and so on the prequel had set up and just enjoy the show. Nevertheless, for a lore enthusiast, they'd never be a good show. I love the avatar. It's portray everything in Asian culture. Different Martial Arts as Bending Styles, Different Ideologies, etc. TLoK would never give me the same vibe as ATLA.

a lot of the people in the comment section just have weak arguments like "oh they made Aang and Toph bad parents (even though Aang was obviously busy fullfiling his avatar lore and teaching air nomad culture to Tenzin and Toph never showed traits of being a good mother in the future), trash show" "bendings like lightning/metal/blood (which were unknown in ATLA) are now more common (due to being widely known) doesnt make sense, trash show" or "Korra shouldnt learn airbending after her other bendings were taken away (even tho its the same plot armor that was used in ATLA when Aang accessed AS in his fight against Ozai)" Also I dont even love the show, I prefer stuff like Usogui or Liar Game.
