@@joeldykman7591This is what the characters in the show argued, and I think it’s a more complicated issue and was actually pretty close to a compelling issue (if they did it well, which they didn’t) because there’s definitely an argument to be made that temporarily uprooting some people’s lives is an understandable side effect of uniting two kinds of sentient beings and allowing them to both live in and interact with each other’s worlds. If you don’t do that, these two will just avoid their issues with each other, instead of confronting and growing each other. If only LoK actually tried to show this, then it might be easier to see that side of the argument.

one of the things that ticked me off was after korra lost connection to her past lives, she could still use the avatar state. The avatar state, as roku tells aang in ATLA, is the knowledge and/or power of all his past lives, the glow represents them Here's the quote: "The Avatar State is a defense mechanism. Designed to empower you with the skill and knowledge of all the past Avatars. The glow is the combination of all your past lives focusing their energy through your body. In the Avatar State, you are at your most powerful, but you are also at your most vulnerable." so, after Korra loses her connection, how could she still use the avatar state?
@noahdrucker3076
@noahdrucker3076 2 года назад
I was thinking about that as well. My interpretation (and personal head cannon) is that although HER connection to the past avatars is gone, they weren't actually killed off. She, for whatever reason, just couldn't access them anymore, and because they were never really gone, she can still go into the avatar state. I also like this theory because it allows me to believe that the next avatars will still get to speak to their past lives, and that this is just one of the many ways in which Korra was a failure.

It’s WILD to me that they thought people wouldn’t want a female protagonist when ATLA was arguably the best example I had growing up of thoughtful, complex and badass female protagonists… and it had A LOT of them. Like Nickelodeon wasn’t even paying attention for the first series or what? And on a side note I will probably never forgive this series for killing off previous avatar lives. Like that is such a core and beautiful part of the story that I think makes the avatar truly special. And if the writers want to make a whole “avatar universe” exploring different avatars, maybe DON’T eliminate the whole previous avatar thing.

People DO want strong female characters. It's called Katara and Toph...not these wokism "feminist" so called "strong women" who ironically take the WORST aspects of masculinity and amplify them. A strong man is patient, understanding, compassionate, reliable, honest, etc... these are all traits of a strong man. Notice how these traits can easily apply to a WOMAN and be interchangable? Hollywood forgot that, in their woke crusade and this is the result: men who are "humiliated" and "cuckolded" as eunuchs to be laughed at, and women who are aggressive, angry, and temperamental. Sad, really.

I just try my best to pretend this whole Korra thing never happened. My biggest problem with it is that it kinda shits on the whole avatar lore. Personally, I like the idea of the avatar just being a natural thing in the world. Balance was a big theme in ATLA and it made sense that in a world where people could bend a single element that there would be one person in the world that can bend all 4 to maintain balance between the nations. I hated the whole Rava and Vatu thing. Even the history of bending. In ATLA they established that people learned bending from watching the "original benders" of that element. The moon for water, the badger moles for earth, the dragons for fire and the Sky bisons for air. That felt like a more natural way for bending to come about in the world. To then turn around and say that the lion turtles gave people bending felt so bad.
@JRexRegis
@JRexRegis 3 месяца назад
Yes! I'll even go so far as to say that in ATLA, Bending was never framed as *magic.* You don't cast magic spells that make fire come forth, you (unknowingly) emulate the way a dragon breathes fire and the world, being spiritual, lends you the power just as it lends them theirs. Bending doesn't come from the inside, that's _why_ it's called "bending". You're not 'conjuring' or 'evoking', you're _bending_ the natural world. This goes further with things like lightningbending, which involves emulating different parts of the natural world - the way lightning flows through conductors, the way the clouds generate it in a thunderstorm. The way the show explains where it comes from is especially significant for waterbending, because we know why the Tides happen - they're caused by gravity pulling on the water. But the people of this world don't. They see that the moon is on the horizon and that the water is gone, and they see that the moon is behind them and the water is close. To them, and therefore the spiritual world, there is no difference between the way the moon pulls and pushes the oceans and the way a dragon breathes fire, which is why waterbending works as it does. Then LoK came along and turned bending into magic granted by lion turtles

honestly anything they would've done to "explain" the avatar and bending would've probably fallen flat for me, even if it was written better. having this ancient world with spirits who have been here since "the beginning" is so mysterious and freaking cool that any explanation kinda ruins it. i like how we learn the lore and history of the world alongside the characters, being told through stories that have been passed down and paintings on walls, it feels more organic than a random 2-episode flashback in a different art style. i like how even past avatars don't know everything, they aren't given unimaginable strength and knowledge, what they can do is limited by what they learned in their lifetime and nobody can just answer all their questions, even once they've passed. it's like how showing the monster in a horror movie makes it less scary. leaving things to and beyond the imagination of the viewer is just more satisfying somehow.
@darthfenrir7773
@darthfenrir7773 2 года назад
I've always felt that Korra's biggest problem is that it degrades everything that was mysterious and intriguing in the the original show. Lightning bending in AtLA: the ultimate form of firebending, a technique so powerful and precise that, even during the comet, only the Fire Nation royal family and the Avatar could do it. Lightning bending in LoK: the tool of blue collar workers and random mob bosses. Bloodbending in AtLA: a technique born of hatred and desperation that a seasoned waterbending master can pull off only with the help of a full moon. Bloodbending in LoK: Amon can take out a half-a-dozen people by blinking at them in the middle of the day. Spirits in AtLA: enigmatic, ethereal beings with great power and motives that aren't based around humans. Spirits in LoK: either generic, pokemon-esque fairy creatures or generic, evil shadow monsters that want to destroy humanity at the behest of a generic evil overlord. Nothing is special in Korra, not even the things Korra introduces.

If we think about the past lives especially in atla, the storg function was mainly for expository dialogue explaining what aang needed to accomplish, how the avatar state works and other things surrounding it and history and backstory. They were there more for the viewers to understand with aang the situation is in. They were very cool and essential parts of atla, but in terms of advice we only see that in filler episodes which mean nothing and on the lion turtle. And the result of that wasn't super important to the end of the story. Like when iroh met korra in the spirit world that essentially functioned as an avatar past life, or when she meets old zuko or toph. It seems like the anger associated with the decision is mainly around the fact we didn't see adult aang do shit, which is unfortunate but again is mainly for fanservice as other people can play the role of a past life. Like if aang just wasn't there as a past life to talk to, I doubt there would be as bad of a hate for it

No, does he become able to lava bend without any training? Yes. Asami, what does she do? what are her ambitions? She wants to redeem the honor of her family's name after her father was evil. Does she accomplish this? Yes, except it's off screen and has no consequence to the story. Now let's look at the Gaang, I won't even mention Zuko, you could remove every frame of ATLA without Zuko and it would still be a better story than every arc in TLOK combined. I'm gonna be fair and focus on Katara, Sokka, and Toph Katara, what does she do? what are her ambitions? She wants to learn to water bend, and she wants to avenge her mom. Lets look at how she learned to water bend cause it's seriously one of the best arcs in ATLA. The problem is that she doesn't have a water bending teacher, so she travels the world with Aang, she is able to learn water bending *on her own* up to a certain point. But guess what, when she solves the problem of finding a water bending teacher, she has another problem, that teacher won't teach her. How does she go about solving this? She fights a fight she knows she will lose, Katara is brave enough to fight against hundreds of years of tradition in the face of a master water bender. No one helps her, Aang tries to of course, but Pakku has no desire to sacrifice his tradition in order to teach Aang. And remember, Katara does this herself, do you remember what she tells Aang right before she fights Pakku? She says "I'm not doing this for you." Bravo, I want to give a standing ovation. This is how you write a character. She has a goal that is independent from anyone else. Once Pakku has a small arc of his own by remembering that he lost his fiance to these same traditions, he teaches Katara. Katara then goes on to become the best student he has, this arc also extends to the last episode. Katara improves her water bending, continually, until the end of the series. She is able to defeat Azula, someone who technically killed the main character, Aang. Imagine that, an arc that extends from start to finish, in the background, independent of anyone else, and without any hand holding. I seriously cannot see an arc that exists in Korra that even ticks 2 of those boxes. I know this is getting long, my fingers hurt. Anyway Lets talk about Sokka, what does he do? what are his ambitions? He wants to become a man, when the men of his village left, he couldn't go with them. By consequence this means he wants to be useful, to his family, and to his tribe. Interestingly enough, Sokka starts his arc with a character flaw. His definition of a warrior is exclusively a man. If he holds onto this definition then he will never go forward. He is sexist. His arc is pretty good, it's not just 1 dimensional, and his path to become a man is not just his ability to fight. He learns that sexism is wrong, you don't need to be a man to be a warrior. Suki is the one who teaches him that. He loses in a mock fight against Suki extremely fast. He offers usefulness in his intellect. He plans the invasion, he helps the mechanist to invent things, he starts the plan to destroy the drill. Many many other bad situations the Gaang has been in, are ones he has solved through his intellect. He truly does become a man during the solar eclipse, when his father is injured during battle. He takes command and is able to lead the troops. By the end of the show he manages to defeat an entire fleet of airships with an idea. And guess what, he does this with 2 strong independent women at his side. Bravo, another standing ovation. He also offers usefulness in battle when he learns swordsmanship from Piandao. During the Boiling Rock, Sokka is fighting Azula with Zuko, he is actively making her dodge and retreat. Let that sink in. Sokka was the guy who was defeated by Zuko with 2 kicks in about 1 second during S1 episode 2. By the end of the show Sokka is fighting one of the most skilled villains in the show on even ground. *BRAVO, STANDING OVATION* This is how you write strong characters in an intricate story. Even when I'm writing what I already know, I'm still having my 1000th realization of how good ATLA is. I'm a dude and the characters I look up to the most in this show are the women like Toph and Katara. Lets talk about Toph. What does she do, and what are her ambitions? She wants to explore the world, she is strong and independent despite her being blind. Now I'll admit I'm struggling to think of a way to write about her arc. I know it's there but I'll be honest, Toph is such a dang *badass* that she doesn't actually need to do much. Her arc concerning her parents is mostly in the comics. Toph accomplishes her ambition throughout the show by exploring the world with the Gaang. Toph was a blind girl who learned to earth bend from the badgermoles, eventually explores the world with the avatar, teaches him how to earth bend, invents metal bending, takes her title as *the best earth bender in the world.* She does have an arc about her relationship with the Gaang. At first she doesn't like to help the Gaang, shes a little too independent. Iroh does have a talk with her, but her issues with Katara's bossiness extends to the 3rd season when Toph is scamming the scam artists. Toph and Katara talk it out and then go have 1 last scam, except they get locked in jail together. This next part about Toph isn't really an arc but more like a component of her character. It's in the Tales of Ba Sing Se episode. Toph hangs out with Katara for a day doing girly things, and we all know Toph is a tomboy. When they encounter some other girls in the city, they make fun of Toph. Toph says that she doesn't care about how she looks, Toph says *"I know who I am"* That's probably my top 10 quotes from ATLA. Katara then says she thinks Toph is pretty and she admires how strong Toph's mindset is. What a good scene, so many other shows fall victim to the idea that female characters only exist to have crushes on the male ones. That's just wrong, ATLA just made a scene about two girls having a day out and it's one of the strongest character moments in ATLA. One last standing ovation BRAVO. Anyway I hope that stops the arguments about which show has better characters. I could have wrote about any of the other characters, Aang, Zuko, Mai, Iroh, Azula, Ty Lee, Suki, the list goes on. It would take way too long to write about them but I've just thought about each of those characters and the complexity they have trumps every character in TLOK. So yeah, the themes, characters, and plot is all written better. By a huge margin. If you read thanks, if you didn't I don't blame you. Just don't reply to me saying I'm wrong if you didn't read.

I kinda forgot to write about Katara's avenging her mother arc but that all took too long to write and I'm sure you can understand yourself how that arc is more mature and thought out than anything TLOK had to offer. Actually Toph does have an arc in that scene. In her introduction episode, she doesn't reveal to her parents that she is independent, because being blind doesn't stop her. But because she can't confront them she runs away. The fact that she says "I know who I am" proves she has changed. She has self-confidence.

@@skull1161everything you wrote here was on point. Everyone’s personality lines up with their goals, and their goals were independent of anyone else, but they were also plot relevant. Extremely plot relevant. We never learned anything about Mako or Bolin’s goals. What ever those were. Bolin wanted to learn metalbending. Why are we just hearing about that in the fourth season??? Mako becoming a cop was only relevant to season 2 (the worst season imo), and it’s barely ever brought up again. It’s like the characters in LOK just do things and then move onto the next thing. None of it has any connections to any over arching plots or character arcs. It’s all just a big bucket of blah. We barely know anything of their backstories besides a few details here and there, nothing of the backstories adding much to their characters. Okay Mako’s parents died, which means he had to fend for himself and his brother. He’s very overprotective as a result and is a workaholic. Good. This doesn’t lead to anything tho. We barely see any character arc as a result of that. It would have made sense if he was overbearing at first, and didn’t believe his brother could do much and always needed to be protected, but later ended up seeing that Bolin was actually very capable, and stopped being overbearing. Likewise, Bolin could have been someone that had to rely on Mako throughout, and he’s learning to be more dependent. He’s not good at first, but he tries, and he sees that without his brother being overbearing, he actually thrives, and discovers he’s really talented. This ends up being relevant in some final battle where all their skills and character growth accumulates. Idk I’m just throwing these ideas out there. A more competent writer could probably come up with something better, but I would have liked if LOK’s team avatar weren’t so boring that I could easily replace them with side characters. Also Asami. Idk. Anything could have been better than what we got. She had so much potential, but over half of her screen time was full of boy drama and terribly written love triangles. LOK fails the bechdel test from s1-s3. So she’s a rich girl but also a non bender. She could start out just being privileged and somewhat naive, but after meeting Korra, Mako and Bolin, she learns more about the state of the world and how the conflict between benders and non benders creates an oppressive system. This would make her sympathize with the equalist movement. There could be a conflict where she’s at odds with Korra because she sees Amon has a point despite being an extremist. Instead of stupid boy drama, they could fight over actual political conflicts that affect the state of the world. They could be narrative foils that end up seeing eye to eye and forming an interest from there. Kind of like a bootleg Zuko. (Or any well written enemies to friends to lovers arc that exists). Idk. Anything to be relevant to the plot of the story. Anything that could point to a character arc would have been good. But instead all we got was nothing and even more nothing. (At least s3 wasn’t bad. I’ll give it that)

@@AnnthemofArt haha thanks, when I wrote this I was just coming off of a rewatch of both ATLA and TLOK and I sort of realized as soon as TLOK got into the later episodes of season 1 I was just feeling disappointed. I mean I get that ATLA was a masterpiece and it's unfair to compare it to TLOK. But there are so many issues in TLOK that could have been solved by any number of the ideas that you threw out in your comment. I think ATLA is known for many things it did well, but one of them is definitely the complexity of every character. I mean even the most insignificant characters show up again to finish an arc of their own. Like Haru and his father Tyro, or the swamp benders, or the mechanist. I look at TLOK and even the most involved characters get almost nothing for their arcs. I honestly don't know what happened to the writing for TLOK. One can only guess honestly, pressure from nickelodeon? Maybe they just didn't have enough time to brainstorm TLOK, when you consider that ATLA had about every episode and season completely thought out before it even aired. Could also be that Aaron Ehasz didn't come back, he was the head writer after all. Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino were still there but maybe losing the head writer was the reason. Probably all these problems combined. Still a show worthy of rewatching but I'm still gonna want to skip almost all of season 1 and 2 when in ATLA I only skip a small number of episodes.

She constantly lashes out at everyone because of her own incompetence and she’s the same person throughout all four seasons. Also, kuvira should have died. Bolin became annoying too. Man keeps his stupidity locked in. Sokka came across as slow but was very competent. Bolin would have suffered if he didn’t have bending.

We had two options: 1) let go a significant number of crew members several weeks early, or 2) make a clips episode. We never considered the first option. E;R highlighted this already: Mike and Bryan even in TLOK had some good ideas. Emphasis on ''some''. The issue is that because they were now the sole writers, all of their ideas were put into the show unchecked. As a writer myself, I know how that can fuck your consistency. I'm extremely cautious, yet even I have had times where it took proof readers to ask me a question I just never would've thought of upon encountering some form of failed consistency that I never noticed was there. What I assume happened is that Bryke had both more motivation (you can tell by their commitment to the show, how they were doing the dances and many of the animations themselves so as to show their animators what they wanted) as well as somebody to filter out the bad and only allow the good during ATLA. But somehow Aang was a lot more competent at being Avatar and more mature at handling various situations compared to Korra. And then the Korra fans, it always those who says "Aang was lame because he didn't beat Ozai, but Korra did". He literally erased Ozai's ability to firebend, he became a regular human. It really shows that they watch shows only for action and never about the plot and character, nothing is wrong with that, but in the shows that focus more on the writing and then criticizing it just from aesthetic aspect is thoroughly unfair. I've been saying ATLA is an adult show disguised as a kids show while Korra is a kids show disguised as a teenagers show. I totally agree, people keep saying it's darker and more mature than ATLA and that's a ludicrous opinion. People easily fooled by appearances who don't really pay attention to the implications of what they're watching and have little knowledge of story-writing. I still don't hate Korra, there's still some decent stuff and characters I like, as Korra herself (sometimes, she makes it really difficult though) but mostly for the universe it's in and definitely has nothing on ATLA. Many shows don't, that's not something to be ashamed of, but it's certainly not solid on its own either. Even the so-called best season, season 3, isn't better than average to me, and yet some people claim it to be gold just because of Zaheer, a 30-year-old guy who stole his whole belief system from a 16 year-old anarchist boy and didn't find necessary to look any further into it. The villains in this show get so much more credit than they deserve, when they're all so half-assed written, left ambiguous to make people think they're deeper than they actually are. But that ambiguity is filled with air, not actual reasons to think they could legitimately be one thing or another. Ozai was very shallow too but at least power hunger is a very real motivation for villainy IRL and it's not like they tried to pretend he was deeper than that as they did in Korra. And at least in ATLA you too had Azula and Zuko to compensate (more than compensate) for him. But in Korra, anyone who can see beyond their front speeches realizes they're either lying about their "meaningful" motivations or switching from one to another throughout the season without proper development. People should just enjoy it if they want but stop trying to convince themselves of it being a misunderstood diamond, because whoever is to be blamed for it, it is a big mess of a show.

Instead of adding the stupid love triangle, why not have there be an episode where Mako shows Korra the city and they find themselves in the harsh part of town. Mako wants to leave but Korra, curious and concerned, goes in to see for herself. She witnesses non-benders being homeless, maybe even a few bender children who have to hid their powers out of fear of discrimination (painting a more complex view on benders and non bender relations) and Mako shares with Korra his experiences as well as how the city actually is. The fact that nickelodeon financially castrated the show because they assumed a female protagonist wouldn't be popular, just shows how uncreative people stick their noses and fingers into the work of the creative people and ruin it for everyone. This experience probably made Brian Konietzko and Michael DiMartino leave Netflix sooner. I wish some talented manga artist would draw their vision of Korra and other Avatar stories. Kind of like they did in One Punch Man.

Other than Legend of Korra just being a badly written show, the main reason I hate it is that it just killed Avatar as a series and concept. Think about it! They can't even do Earth anymore. 1. Bending no longer makes the world move. With how fast technology is advancing, one could argue that bending is just no longer needed. Bending isn't special anymore. Any Joe can do it. Which leads to the larger issue that bending isn't a martial arts anymore. Don't have to be in the right mindset. Don't have to understand any concepts or forms. Just throw a punch. Just do a kick. 2. No real culture differences between the nations anymore. The Avatar doesn't have to travel and immerse themselves in different cultures. It's not needed. Just go to Republic City. 3. They are no longer the bridge between the Spirit and Human Worlds. Cause apparently, there was a literal bridge. _Anyone_ can understand spirits now. They're not mythical creatures you should respect, they're Ghibli animals. Play fetch, pet them! They're stupid. They don't know how radios work. Humans are _smarter_ than they are. A child is _smarter_ than the one who knows ten thousand things. They're just animals, no bridge needed. 4. They killed all the past lives! No more past wisdom. No more nuance to what each Avatar thought was the best path forward. No more understanding the larger sacrifices that comes with having a duty to the world. The differences betweens Avatars who lived during times of peace and times of conflict. It's just Korra now. It's all just Korra. She's the _only_ damn Avatar we got now, and we gotta deal with it. 5. (This could also be 4a) The Avatar State is useless now. The glow aren't the collective past lives, it's Jesus. Cause Jesus is always with you. Can't even beat an average bender with it. Most powerful and most vulnerable state? Nope! At most, it can help you beat a child in a race. Need to actually make a sacrifice and release yourself from your worldly desires and wants. Nope! Can just go in and out of it. Because reasons? They can't do Earth now! We can't see the next Avatar now! The concept and potential of Avatar is pretty much dead in the water! The only way we can get the next Avatar is if they miraculously become competent writers and somehow makes a story with these gaping problems, or just scrap _everything_ Korra did and start over. Neither of those 2 things are gonna happen. In just 2 freaking seasons, Legend of Korra killed off any potential for other shows. When I was younger, I thought about the gigantic shoes the next Avatar would have to fill after Aang. To help a healing world at tentative peace. The freaking _potential_ of getting to Fire, and having the world hold a breath at the Fire Nation having that much power again. But nope! And for that reason alone, I will always hate Korra.

Show me a carpenter who can't get/keep a job because there's a strong preference for earth bender workers in the housing market. Show me a plumber who's constantly overlooked for water benders. Show me an electrician with a grudge against fire benders. Show me all that, and then show the non-benders getting _mad_ Show me innovators with a grudge against the world and hunger for equality. They can shoot lightning? Non-benders make the taser. Benders looking down at other fighting styles cause they're "lesser?" Chi blocking is learned by everyone. In response? The fighting style is deemed illegal by those in power. Cause it's no fun when the rabbit has the gun. Korra could have been great.

This was posted by Bryan on his tumblr July 12, 2012 so for the people who say that they never knew that they were gonna get another season until season 1 ended are so wrong about this. “The Legend of Korra has been picked up for an additional 26 episodes, which will be split into Books 3 & 4! Mike and I had been hoping to announce this big news to the crowd at the Korra SDCC panel tomorrow morning, but the network put out a press release yesterday. And as we suspected, people are pretty confused, understandably so. Hopefully people are also excited. I'm sure lIl be trying to clear this up in posts for a long time to come, but I'II lay it all out right now: - Book 1 = 12 episodes - Book 2 = 14 episodes - Book 3 = 13 episodes - Book 4 = 13 episodes - TOTAL = 52 episodes Why are the four books split up into those numbers of episodes, you might ask? Initially, Nickelodeon picked up Korra as a 12-episode miniseries. Their idea was to do 12-episode arcs that were more standalone than the original Avatar series. Mike and I were cool with this idea, as we had originally wanted the seasons to be 12 episodes long instead of 20, and creatively we liked the idea of doing tighter story arcs. The original plan was that if Nickelodeon wanted more episodes, they would order them 12 episodes at a time. But while we were in production on Book 1, Nickelodeon decided to change their season lengths from 20 episodes (like Avatar had) to the more standardized international length of 26 episodes. They liked how Book 1 was coming out and decided to round out the order to fit their new 26-episode mold, and we got a 14-episode pick-up, which became Book 2. Then, the network wanted even more Korra, so they picked up another order of 26 episodes. Mike and I wanted to stick with the shorter "books," so creatively we are splitting the second order of 26 into Books 3 & 4, 13 episodes each. What makes this even more confusing is that the network considers each block of 26 episodes a "season," which is another reason we try to stick to calling these Korra arcs "books." So for the network's purposes, Books 1 & 2 are Season 1, and Books 3 & 4 are Season 2.”

I've always had this headcannon avatar series rattling around in my head: we start with an adult Aang trying to teach people airbending, and failing no matter who he tries to teach. His kids, people born in air bender temples, no one can airbend, he's truly the last. He learns from Roku that this means the avatar cycle will end with the Firebender avatar after Aang. Skip forward to said Firebender finishing his avatar training and venturing out into the world. A world where prejudace against firebenders has grown unprecedented, where the avatars between Aang and our character have spent their entire lives bringing balance to the world. Our character, THE LAST AVATAR who has trained his entire life has nothing to do. The show centers on this internal conflict as he goes around trying to find purpose while pushing back against anti-firebender sentiments in a world that doesn't need him. The show culminates with him making a deal with an air spirit in the spirit realm, sacrificing himself so that airbenders will start being born, continuing the avatar cycle, his deal unknown to the entire world.

37:27 it told a bad story because TLoK was a political lecture on the USA. Because they got lazy and entitled, they threw away the unique world that had been created and made it into a big USA city world. I bet they thought that was clever, they could use lightning bending to make it an industrial world, and so imagination of the airbender universe didn’t need to exist anymore. Just write it about modern day. And what happened with industrialization among other things was feminism. And wouldn’t you know it, the avatar is a girl (cool) but she’s a wild child whose first words (a bit on the nose here) are “I’M THE AVATAR AND YOU HAVE TO DEAL WITH IT!” From there she disrespects her father. Her family. Her teachers. The community. She never learns how to be a better or stronger person and ends up winning while trashing just about everything that came before. She’s not likable. Not because she’s bold. But because she’s a political insertion lecture of morality that’s too on the nose, while also being an absolute clown with her attitude and behavior without ever seeing an issue because, well, she’s the main character and a girl Bo’s do “you gotta deal with it.” The show ended worse than it started. The last airbender brought my family together in a room every week. @@BrolyPowerMaximum You've summed up how I feel about TLoK. I'll be honest, I was a little bit outside of the main demog for Avatar (couple years too old for the ads to appeal/exposed to other better stuff already at that point) but as a fan of martial arts and stories with good world building, I at least respected ATLA. Korra was one of many shows that were part of the unfortunate combination of incompetent writing and the beginning of the ramp up of the culture war we're currently in. The most frustrating thing is, as a guy who's an ethic minority, I understand that it feels good to have "representation" but there's a difference between representation and pandering but the average person can't tell the difference. Additionally, the over obsession of needing to see yourself in the character can loop right back around into narcissism. A character like Korra who excels at everything just because and if you question it you're sexist is a slap in the face to women and dilutes ideals of what the first couple waves of feminism fought for. And the mark of a poor writer is when they can't elevate the character being "represented" without denigrating the other characters perceived as the "opposite" or making them all incompetent/cannon fodder/punching bag/etc. Also, and this one might be a bit of a niche criticism but one I definitely saw often enough to notice -- are the people who loved the show cause it " looked like an anime without all the 'weird stuff'".

Flawed characters are good but not when they just make them terrible and hard to sympathize with. Korra forced herself on a man and accused him of thinking of her when he's with his girlfriend, and then started dating his girlfriend??? It was fucked up tbh. Ikr it's like the creators didn't do ANY research about how political ideology is formed and how it manifests in government. Kuvira was supposed to be a fascist, but they didn't portray the ideology as a cultural one, but as a single-minded individual just being evil. In Avatar they DID show us how the fascist ideology affects the rest of the Fire Nation society, like when Aang went to school and saw first hand how the nation tries to rewrite and erase it's own history. That's just one example but it does way more than Korra ever did.

This is accurate to how China was throughout history and indeed how many fascist movements arise. Mussolini didn't rally the majority, his blackshirts took over and the masses tolerated it, oftentimes too poor and uneducated to waste their time with things like "morals" and "geopolitics" right up until they realized their home was burning from Allied bombing raids, and the fear of the blackshirts and contentedness with the status quo was outgrown by fear of the constant bombings and Allied troops marching closer to Rome.

So many villains get defeated by force without their ideology being defeated by that of the heroes. Take Thanos in Endgame. He loses in the end but his neo-Malthusian ideology is never defeated. There's very little pushback against it even in Infinity War. The heroes fight Thanos because "killing people is bad," but nobody challenges his claim. They only challenge his belief that HE should be the one to do it.

@@joshuafischer684 And the thing is that they didn't even explicitly say that the issue with Thanos was his solution--which would actually have been an improvement, because even if you accept that his ideology is correct...it's STILL a really bad solution, especially when you can rewrite the universe with a snap, since populations will eventually recover. But they're not willing to go to the full length of explicitly saying that even if you're right, your solution can be absolutely be worse than the problem and THAT is a reason to stop somebody. That fits in with the whole issue of privilege involved, though. Privilege means you won't have the necessary experience/knowledge to recognize that your solution is bad--"Let them eat cake" being a solution to a bread shortage is not something you come up with UNLESS you're too privileged to understand the problem. It wasn't exactly what was said by Marie Antoinette, but it's worth noting that the French people did eventually get around to the very simple solution for when you've got privileged a-holes running around whose solutions are at BEST merely impractical...

(Long comment incoming) Honestly, I would've liked it if Korra wasn't about restoring the world _spiritually,_ but culturally The show brings up the fact that Korra is oblivious to the outside world as she was nearly kidnapped as a kid and thus was kept in the Water Nation, so she never went through the Avatar Journey You could have it so that Korra is good at Fire and Earth because they correspond to her personality traits so she understands them better, but ironically struggles with Water and Air, her closest elements, because they require different ways of thinking You could make her feel talentless or ashamed that she can't properly grasp the elements that are the easiest ones for her to learn You could make it so that Korra feels like she doesn't live up to her predecessor Aang because he mastered all the elements at age 12, while she's struggling with 2 of them at age 17, which just frustrates her even more: she feels like she's not fit to be the Avatar, but gives it her all anyway, so you can keep that headstrong vibe to her When Korra is told to head to Republic City, the one city where refugees from all four nations can meet, she's excited: not just because she gets to spread her wings and explore the world, not just because she finally gets to master Airbending, but because Republic City should theoretically be the most diverse place on Earth, which gives her the opportunity to actually learn about other people and other bending styles When she arrives though, she's confused: Republic City isn't brimming with as much cultural influence as she dreamed, instead, it's a pretty dry steampunk-esque city that's focuses on practicality rather than culture And boom, you could explain why Republic City is somewhat culturally empty because of events after Avatar -- people were left divided after the 100 year war and it'd take time for people to warm up to eachother, even without the threat of war looming over everyone You could say that the Gaang were so focused on making sure that Republic City was safe and that the world was in order that they might've neglected the more cultural aspects of it (especially and ironically Aang, who turns his attention to reinstating the Air Nation) You could say that that Republic City's citizens feel obligated to keep their cultural traits locked to bending only because of how dry Republic City's environment feels, and so on You could argue that Korra being more cultural defeats the point of the Last Airbender, where Aang had to embrace other cultures to master the elements: which is fair, but I think Airbender focuses more on different cultural mindsets instead of cultural traditions or attire My bad for the length or if this is all over the place, I was mostly spitballing ideas :)

Every season of Korra begins and ends the same. We establish the villain who is always a character that is upending the status quo due to some ideological reason. In many ways they appear to be justified, and we set up a little dilemma where our heroes have to disentangle their ideology and decide if they even ought to be opposing the villain. But then all that pesky thinking about political structures and ethical issues is all but completely aborted around the middle of the season after the villain goes too far in some way, and Team Korra feels forced to intervene with violence. Then finally by the last few episodes, just before Korra has to deal with the villain once and for all, it is revealed that actually the villain was acting in bad faith in some way, and the ideology they seemed to be a true believer in was at most a partial representation of their true goals, which are ultimately really just basic villain shit. The Fire Nation in ATLA are portrayed as being pretty straightforwardly evil from beginning to end, but that's because a pseudo-fascist imperialist nation is kinda just straightforwardly fucking evil, and the portrayal of that ideology is done with much more maturity than the clown shoes floundering that Korra engages in with its ideologically motivated villains. And it's supposed to be the more mature, political show lmao.

No more air means that each of the other three can expand into the space it no longer occupies - becoming broader, more nuanced, but also less defined by their base element. One problem I had was the difference in representation for the non-benders in each show. In ATLA you have freaking Sokka, my favorite character who struggles throughout the show to find out what his role is (particularly in fighting, cause he’s definitely the meat and sarcasm guy, the leader, and the planner (cite Bitter Work, Jet, and the entire show, respectively)). But he always has a hard time finding out where he fits in for helping fight enemies. He places more value on women and learning to fight in new styles from the Kyoshi Warriors (this is the first time we really see him beating enemies (besides that one boomerang headshot with Zuko (and, of course,”that’s from the water tribe!”)) and he really starts to explore his own fighting abilities as a nonbender. He still has his value as a fighter questioned throughout the show (losing his boomerang and it’s not as important to anyone “that’s correct!” And Toph’s statement “three on three plus sokka” really both give ground to the insecurity we see in Sokka’s Master (my favorite episode, if I had to choose)). In Sokka’s master he really goes into how difficult it is for him to be normal. He doesn’t give up, however, and his friends encourage him to find a master. The fighting style he develops is entirely unique and interesting (“you messed things up in a special way”) and is grounded on his own creative and honest nature. In the remainder of the show we see him develop this skill, alongside his other skills of leadership (the development of which is showcased in The Day of Black Sun, where he goes from being unable to take on his father’s role to shouldering the responsibility when people need him to). We see his value in the team throughout the show, but he has such an amazing development in his own self-worth in the third season. Finally he’s willing to give up the part of him that he fought so much for (his ability to fight) by sacrificing his sword to save Toph. This shows that his perception of his own value no longer hinges on his contribution to the fighting of the team. He protects, leads, and thinks and plans for the whole group. Essentially, he learns a lot and manages to be so many people’s favorite character (myself included) because of how amazing and well-grounded and developed his character is. He shows two things: 1) nonbenders can help just as much in fighting and helping and 2) your ability to fight (whether in bending or non bending) is never the whole of your character. Then, there’s Asami. It may be that the standards were just so high after sokka, but she fell so short as a representative of non bending. Suki was another main nonbender, and she was awesome! Asami was pretty cool but, being the main nonbender in the show, didn’t have nearly as much development as I would want. Season 1 of LOK didn’t give Asami’s perspective as a nonbender very much, it all fell under the scope of her relationship with her father. Her development was far less impressive, and I couldn’t find inspiration from her, which really makes me sad. Since no viewer can bend elements, we’re all predisposed to relate the most to nonbenders and derive inspiration from them. When I was young and saw Sokka’s Master, I felt so comforted (because at that time I was trying to see if I could water bend in the pool, which I think we all tried bending at some point) My point is, nonbenders have to be well-rounded characters who can really assist the team in more ways than just fighting. For the most part, it seemed that Asami was responsible for driving the team around and acting as part of a love triangle.

I agree with what you said about the past lives. I don't understand why the writers did that. Instead of the Avatar State is the combination of all past lives, it's just a spirit. Spirits in ATLA were not bad or good. In the LoK, they were reduced to glorified Pokemon. Season 2, as a whole, cheapened a lot of the magic of ATLA. Season 3 is the best season in LoK, in my opinion.
@youngmaster7405

the spirits weren't glorified pokemon and they introduced some new interesting designs that I liked. the avatar state is composed of two halves. stick with me cause this will be long, since all of the avatars live in raava and raava resides in the avatar(current) activating the avatar state gives you connection to all of them giving you their skills and wisdom as well as their experience. raava herself is a very powerful spirit as we see in beginnings and her power is what allows an avatar in AS to do larges scale and amazing things. also we never see dark spirits in atla and as unalaq put it "there is no good or bad spirit there is light and darkness in them all" just cause we dont see them doesn't mean they don't exist. and lastly, korra never cheapened the magic system, it followed it in almost ever way while also expanding it without changing anything.

This show annoyed the shit out of me, and when I told people I thought it was bad and inferior to the last air-bender I would just be told I was completely wrong. Every season is just filled with shit that somehow gets worse and worse. Bloodbenders can now permanently remove peoples bending, what? The connection to past avatars is permanently and irrevocably broken, the fuck? This canonically makes the avatar just a normal person who can bend all elements, Korra shouldn't be able to use the avatar state ever again. Every single decision made in this show frustrates me beyond belief. Aang was far more mature and developed in the first episode than Korra ever becomes.

I used to love looking into the lore of ATLA before Korra came out, and one of the most interesting theories was that the Avatar was the literal avatar of the spirit of the Earth, like how Tui and La are the avatars of the moon and ocean. It was so interesting to think about the implications of that and how it fit so perfectly into the ATLA world. But nah, the Avatar is just some random ass spirit of pure good or some shit. You hit the nail on the head so hard with this video. The chief problems with LoK as I see it is a faux attempt at maturity failure and the complete blandness of the setting. Most of the other problems (with the exceptions of pacing and character writing) can be draw from these issues. As you motioned, the show wants to be mature so it introduces complex socio-political problems that mimic real world issues. The problem is, however, is that it only ever explores these issues in a surface level, shallow way. It highlights the problems without doing the leg work to actually explore realistic solutions. It is a show that can only recognize problems by their symptoms and not the underlying causes. That's why the resolutions feels cheap and unearned. All the seasons ends with the villain (the symptom) being defeated but not the underlying causes being addressed. The bland setting on the other hand damages the world building and cultural diversity of the show. The 20's American city completely reduces the unique Asian inspired setting that gave the Last Airbender its identity. Additionally, it creates a cultural monolith and this expressed in the blandness of the citizens (who should belong to different cultures) and the ending. What were once unique martial arts have been reduced to a bland sporting event where everyone fights the same. (pro-bending). Even Korra's first air bending move is emblematic of this issue, she PUNCHED to air bend. You would be hard pressed to find a single scene where Aang made fist while air bending. The setting also hurts pacing and character growth. Because Team Avatar always moved around in the Last Airbender, it really helped with pacing and growth could be geographically charted. Ex: The further up north Aang went in season 1 the better a water bender he was. The closer Aang got to Ba Sing Se the better Earthbender he was. This is actually a really easy way to help viewers understand key moments in the show, they associate mile stones with unique geographical locations and progress with distance traveled. It's not impossible to have character growth in a single location, but requires more legwork on behalf of the writer and the Korra's writers did not put in that legwork.

The thing with season one was that there never was any inequality showcased against non-benders. The show never shuts up about there being so much inequality and oppression, but fails to properly show it in a compelling way. I'm sure that was the intent behind showing a couple of gangsters abuse their bending early on, but anyone who knows anything about organized crime is that it's often motivated from a lack of resources, opportunity, and manipulating the unfortunate. And the show even reinforces this by pointing out how Fire bending boyfriend and his Earth bending brother (I genuinely can't remember their names) had also resorted to crime to survive. Strange that there seems to be a significant population of underclass benders in a story and setting that's trying to setup non-benders as being systemically oppressed, while non-benders are gathering in large scale rallies and organizing a militia with enough manpower and firepower to take on an entire army and capture the capital city of the entire world. And let's not forget that this same city is built from the ground up to cater to non-benders in both invention and infrastructure. Like, the idea that there would be some inherent imbalance of power and opportunity between people who can shoot fire out of their hands and your average, non-bending citizen is definitely THERE, and it should've been so easy to showcase it and build on that idea, but this show is just so bad that it completely fumbles every possible opportunity it had. It's also weird how it was never a problem in ATLA, where bending was actively embraced as the central component of each nation's respective culture, and the one non-bending character of the main group consistently proves himself to be just as capable as your average bender. The entire sword training episode was basically addressing Sokka's insecurity about being a non-bender, and then proving that whether or not he can bend is irrelevant to his worth and capabilities.

That's a damn good point. Despite how big bending is in the world, there were still plenty of swordsmen, archers, martial artists, and bounty hunters that were celebrated for their raw skill. There were plenty of non-benders that succeeded with no sign of prejudice against them. The only example in ATLA I can remember is Zuko being shamed for being pretty basic firebender, but that was only because more was expected of the Fire Prince. Fast forward to the post-war industrial world, there is suddenly this moronic divide between benders and non-benders. This doesn't track in a world with modern industry where these gifts would be less important than ever before. There were never any caste systems in place that revolved around bending. There were only a couple isolated incidents of street criminals abusing people. Looking back, the conflict just seemed very artificial and seemingly ripped from the pages of a bad X-Men fanfic.

Yep, it think that they were hoping that the real world would do the heavy lifting. In America there is a constant, neverending chanting about social inequalities, so for a kids TV show to cry social inequalities without bothering to even show them implies that they figured people would just project their real world view into the show to justify it. LoK doesn't show the benders being oppressive towards non benders in particular, they just hope you go along with the familiar narrative and apply the same over reaching real world narratives into a kids show.
@delivererofdarknessshoguno1133
Honestly, it was such a great potential for a complicated story. I mean, let's look at it realistically, if bending was real, there would be a massive advantage for all benders in both employment and everyday life. There is no job that a non-bender would do better than a bender and many jobs that a bender would do 100 times better. Why hire a team of builders when you can have a couple of earth benders build you a house in a few hours, all from solid stone? And benders don't have any disadvantages from being benders, they are just default better. And I am not even mentioning the capabilities of a common bender to commit violence compared to a common normie. These could make for ligitimate points, they wouldn't even have to make equalists into generic evilguys led by a bender pretending to be a nonbender, but they ended up making benders look opressed by the unfair prejudice from equalists and their supporters and just forgot about all the talks of inequality by the end.

The people who rave about Korra being good are looking back at the past with rose colored glasses. I remember when it was out and fresh many people were complaining that they hated Korra as a character. About how she was annoying, reckless, and despite being older than Aang, was some how less mature than he was. There were moments when people were abandoning the show because of the lows it reached. Complaining about the dumb love triangle they hammered in, stupid plot points, and how the main character was an idiot. The more I look back at Korra, the more see the faults show up and disillusioned I become with it. Where as when I look back at or even re watch Last Airbender, the more and more I appreciate it as an adult for tackling mature themes in a good way. I'm going to say this, and frankly I don't care what people think, but the only reason people speak on the show with praise is because of the Korasami non-sense they pulled at the end. People where already talking and rightfully criticizing the last season for issues it was having; saying it wasn't bad by any means but it wasn't great either (there were actually some very insightful criticisms about the story of the last season.) But as soon as they pulled that out of their ass, the narrative suddenly changed about how "bold" and "game changing" it was. No it was not, it was dumb, it re opened the love triangle which destroyed the show and helped to trigger the shallow representation craze we see in media today. Im going to end this with one last point. At the height of legend of Korra, right after the Wan episodes, a joke people made was "Would you rather watch a an annoying girl mess up by being an idiot. Or watch an entire season dedicated to Wan and how he basically created civilization?" If people would rather watch a series about some one that is not your main character, that is a bad sign.

korra was a fun show to watch. people just like to be too critical for nitpicky things. somethings are understandable. but then you have people complaining about how Korra was able to use Avatar State after losing her past lives. The answer to why she can still use the Avatar State is obvious. Think back to Avatar Wans episode. Did he have past lives? No. He only had ravaa. yet he went into the avatar state in his battle with Vatuu. So the Avatar State is still triggered by the Light Spirit Ravaa. Sure, the Avatar State gives you access to your past lives, but its actually activated by Ravaa's light spirit and the light spirit in itself is a massive strength boost. Wan used Avatar state with no past lives. So yeah. But anyways, people like to complain about many things in the show but people really gotta think about the current society Korra lives in lol. Its not the "good ol days" its not olden times. Its not the dinosaur age. Lightning bending, a once rare skill, is going to become less rare naturally. Metalbending is too. If you have an incredible skill, you're probably going to teach it to a few people and one or two of those few people might spread the skill along. Plus metal bending and lightning bending heavily impacted Republic City for the better. Many people dont like the writers desicions in areas like Korra skill in bending and such or how quick she developed. She knew 3 out of 4 elements as a kid but thats not really a crazy thing. She had all the write qualities for the 3 elements she knew. She had passion and a hot temper for fire. She had natural waterbending blood through having a Waterbending father. And she was a very stubborn kid which attributes to earthbending. So its not surprising that she naturally grasped those bending arts. But she still needed to master them. She mastered Firebending at 17 years old. yet she knew firebending as a toddler. So she still had a lot of work to do in terms of advancement so people really shouldnt be complaining about how everything was just handed to her. She had to work to master waterbending, earthbending, and firebending by the age of 17. And no. Aang never mastered all of the bending arts by the ATLA series. He only mastered air and he semi-mastered water bending. I wouldn't say he completely mastered waterbending considering his inability to use the large pool around him in his fight with Ozai to wreck Ozai. Bro fell into a bunch of water and didnt do a water vortex? or a huge wave? Yeah, bro isnt a master water bender. A master would take advantage of being in the middle of an element that they are extremely skilled with. I think Aang was the closest to mastering water though rather than the other elements apart from Air which he obviously mastered.

@@mynameisntjoe3024 Not particularly. Korra is the classic example, in fact probably the best example, of a character to whom a story happens to rather than actually having her engage with it. I honestly don't subscribe to the common criticism that she's a Mary Sue that the writers love, because on the contrary, I've never seen writers so consistently and repeatedly set up a character to fail and engineer a character to be insufferable and unlikeable. The problem is that this is never in service of anything. It just happens because that's how the writers THINK a character arc works. Every season excluding the 4th begins with a Korra devoid of respect for those around her, her own abilities and even herself. The final season is a desperate handicap meant to force an arc upon her, but actually manages to be worse than anything the show did prior, somehow, because the writers knew absolutely nothing about how a subject matter as complicated and delicate as PTSD and tried to do it anyway. The worst part about that is that the only reason you would ever do that is to force Korra through some sort of crucible in order to call it development, because every single previous attempt failed because the writers were writing a reactive story with the intention of being "mature" instead of a proactive one with the intention of telling a story worth telling. The result is a contradictory mess of a show starring a character who exclusively stumbles into change caused exclusively by other people. How do you know this show is contradictory? Because Korra is the most proactive character in the cast yet in 4 seasons the ONLY thing that she does to change the status quo is running away to Republic City in the pilot. Amon's exposure? Korra accidentally did that. Restoring the bending Amon took? Aang did that. Opening the spirit portals? Unalok did that. Destroying the Avatar cycle (bad changes are still changes). Unalok did that. Earth kingdom destabilization? Zaheer did that. Her PTSD? Zaheer did that. Earth Empire? Kuvira did that. Third Spirit Portal? Kuvira accidentally did that via her superweapon and Korra was just the catalyst. Aang begun the series without the skills or the maturity to defeat the Firelord and end the war. By the series end, that is exactly what he does. He doesn't stumble into it, he chose to act and came out the other end victorious, thanks to the culmination of all of his past experiences. Korra never gets this. And even if she had, I'm not convinced the writers would have even gotten the point of why this is important. Thank goodness this show ended when it did.

Aang knows energybending so even as a spirit he can take and bring back bending "Opening the spirit portals? Unalok did that" And Korra went the hard way of not closing them back (even though most avatars would do that) and instead tried to unite humans and spirits "Amon's exposure? Korra accidentally did that." Accidentally? How? " he chose to act and came out the other end victorious" From his pov he ran away and he even blames himself for it, that victory wasn't planned, because he didn't expect FN to attack Air Nomads "Korra never gets this" Aang went through development to forgive himself and fight his fear. Korra went the different way- her development was about her stopping being reckless and instead of solving things with violence she now chooses to talk first. She saw that being avatar isn't only about fighting the bad guys and the whole story she develops into full avatar (s1-s4: reckless- still reckless, maybe unlikable, but she learned that her most loved ones were lying to her so who can blame her- more mature, still sometimes too reckless- totally matured, not reckless at all

I also don't get how she learned fire-bending before the White Lotus given it's her opposing Element. Roku took years to master water bending,, and Ange didn't master all the Elements he was close to mastery but he was adequate to holding off Ozi before he forced Ange into the Avatar state. Season 3 is the only season that's interesting.

@@simplyawful543 OK, still doesn't explain how she learned fire-bending at such a young age. It makes sense that she has trouble learning air bending since the air nomads were killed by Sozen killed all the air benders and Aang might have been a master air bender but he can't apart the whole amount of training I'd imagine since he didn't just train under just monk Geotso he learned under many air bending masters Tensense training only had Aang. Also, Kora was made to be a prodigy at such a young age then it just skips to the future where she's learning proper fire bending and how to use it in combat. The point is don't show the main character at a young age showing they have a grasp on three of the four elements they're supposed to learn from masters about the basics. Not just make the MC a gifted bender in three of four since the Air Benders were all killed.

@@donney3389 Cause Korra's story starts at a different time than Aang's it's rlly that simple, Korra's story isn't supposed to be spent watching her master the 4 elements, if u just wanna see that again go watch ATLA, she struggles with in season 1 and the other seasons are about different problems ATLA has a very direct story, "master the elements to beat the firelord", that isn't what Korra is, there's no main powerful final big bad like in ATLA or a time limit (sozins comet) so we have no need to watch her master each element

@@simplyawful543 I get Kora's story is not about mastering all the elements... I'm just pointing out the inconsistency that I've noticed within the shows and having the elemental powers make sense if they hadn't shown Korra at a young age already showing a level of control over elements she shouldn't have much control over... if they hadn't shown that and started with the sparing scene then I wouldn't be gripping about it since it wasn't shown at a young age they could've alluded her struggles when learning ari bending or when practicing. Instead, they make her a prodigy, and no real growth other than her PTSD after season 3.

@@AustinKelly01 Korra is a fictional animated character, no need to feel sorry for her. My point was how they cheapened the avatar state in this show. Aang was 12 years old and was kicking ass. In the avatar state he literally pushed back an whole army in the water nation, almost killed people til he caught himself and defeated a super powered firelord. Many of those before he even mastered all the elements. Korra consistently was losing fights to simple benders while she was suppose to be in the avatar state. Not to mention only avatars were suppose to have to ability to learn multiple bending styles, now because you try hard enough you can learn new styles. Lava bending, what the hell was that!

What bugs me most about the series is how much they butcher the lore. It seriously would've been better as a mini series like originally intended. I feel like so many people who love this show tend to ignore the actual, valid criticism and flaws other fans of the previous show point out, and instead defend themselves against the weaker, more niche criticisms or under the guise of a "you just have nostalgia glasses" type of argument. Or falling for the superficial representation of emotion-heavy ideas like ptsd. I wish they'd realize that it's okay to love something while simultaneously acknowledging and accepting its flaws.

I can agree with that. I mean I also have a dilemma with Boruto. But it's just. A good entertainment, both of them is. And I mean by that is to actually ignore the lore and so on the prequel had set up and just enjoy the show. Nevertheless, for a lore enthusiast, they'd never be a good show. I love the avatar. It's portray everything in Asian culture. Different Martial Arts as Bending Styles, Different Ideologies, etc. TLoK would never give me the same vibe as ATLA.

a lot of the people in the comment section just have weak arguments like "oh they made Aang and Toph bad parents (even though Aang was obviously busy fullfiling his avatar lore and teaching air nomad culture to Tenzin and Toph never showed traits of being a good mother in the future), trash show" "bendings like lightning/metal/blood (which were unknown in ATLA) are now more common (due to being widely known) doesnt make sense, trash show" or "Korra shouldnt learn airbending after her other bendings were taken away (even tho its the same plot armor that was used in ATLA when Aang accessed AS in his fight against Ozai)" Also I dont even love the show, I prefer stuff like Usogui or Liar Game. Its just that this show is okay/cool

@mynameisntjoe3024 I dont see how those arguement are "weak". You are the exact type of people we are criticising about. You believe the Korra writers story telling is more canon than the original source material. You are easily brainwashed to accpept new lore by incompetent writerrs hijacking a story they did not create. If anything its disrepectful to take someone else's story and take their characters to do actions that has no correlation to their personal self. It makes ZERO SENSE that a chuld with no parents who loves peace and is a pacifist neglects their own children. Never in the history of mankind has that ever happened. The story writers all have daddy issues and have zero self awareness on how neglectful parents are made. Again this all ties in to Korra writers disrespecting the original creater of ATLA and makes SURE its canon so no one can argue about it. You love this show just admit it. Every Korra fan claim they dont like this show yet find the need to make paragraphs countering the points to Korra criticism.

@@Evolution-Is-A-Blatant-Lie The real problem isn't Korra's outright bad writing (except book 2). It's just Korra haters expecting a show that was intended to be a mini-series to be on the ranks of arguably the best animated show ever created. You're just setting the standards way too high. ATLA is objectively better than TLOK, everyone knows that, and if you hate Korra so much, just move on. It's not like ATLA had to be removed for TLOK to be created.

@GenericDan the world will never advance if everyone one just "moved on" if they had negative opinions. Its how criticism works. You are who you are today because of both negative and positive opinions. Telling someone to "move on" is just lazy arguing and makes you shallow to accept that bad criticism is needed to have a better outlook of life. Also what is wrong with setting high standards? For the past decade every one wants to release reboots and prequels without putting effort yet have the audacity to expect fans to like it just as much as the original. Stop consuming medicore content. Have some self respect of what you call "entertainment" in your spear time.

11:52 Yeah! How dare Korra, presumably right after getting her bending back, not immediately tell Tano and that crime boss dude etc. to immediately fly over to the south pole so she can give them their bending back!? Dude, I wanted to see Korra give Tano and that crime boss dude their bending back so badly. And I wanted to see Tano and that crime boss dude make the trip on screen, complete with Indiana Jones style red line traveling graphics. I mean who was even that Lynn character anyway? Like did she even do anything to earn Korra’s trust and gratitude? And was literally the only other person who lost their bending that was in Korra’s immediate vicinity? SMH that’s just bad writing man.

I watched the first 5 minutes of Korra and immediately turned it off and dispensed with it because I knew the writing was going to be bad. In "The Last Airbender" you learn so much about the characters and the setting within the first five minutes. You learn they have various magical powers that are called "bending". You learn the temperament of Sokka and Katara and that Sokka can't bend. You learn their setting because they are actually outside in the snow. By the end of those 5 minutes they're in the middle of discovering Aang in the ice. Who would turn the show off at that point? In Korra I learned NOTHING about those kids or how their world had changed over time. I don't have patience for bad writing.
