Yeah...it is not only unscrupulous, but also deliberately harmful and malicious, as it could lead a person of faith to unknowingly break an important tenet.
Right? It's absolutely insane that a product that is pork would even remotely be labeled as Kosher. Even with an OU certification. That would make me question every OU marked product if even one can get away with it.
I am catholic so of course know little about Kosher (and Halal) so thank you for this. Although I do not keep any dietary restrictions I am LIVID that some companies would stoop so low as to fake the signs to dupe people into buying their products. A disgusting and greedy move.
They have also done this for allergy free foods. One product in particular that I came across was a plant based cheese advertising dairy free but you flip it over and it states on the back that it may contain traces of dairy.
@@kigeerdink6662 This is commonly done on all vegan foods. Because they cannot be sure that dairy hasn't somehow come into contact with the product, and it's sold as "Dairy Free", they have to put a disclaimer in case somehow dairy does come into contact with the food.
I was surprised that even frozen vegetables need to be certified kosher. And here I thought a whole food plant based diet would be considered kosher because it doesn't include meat (no animal products at all), dairy, or eggs. I always learn something new from you in your videos. Thanks. 😊
Yes! Isn’t that wonderful? That way, we can be certain that the fruits and vegetables were bug-free and were not exposed to any kind of forbidden substance. ✡️❤️
I worked at a canning facility and the cleaning of lines and preparation of kosher items is extremely serious. We loved having a Rabbi in the plant and learning from him. Thank you Sarah. This video made me recall some things I had not remembered in a while
To lable anything with pork in it as kosher is truly shameful, as it preys on ignorance of that one specific law of kosher food. It's also kind of funny as most people who are not Jewish or Muslim know this is a strict taboo for both groups.
I can't figure out why they would even do that. I have never met a person who keeps kosher but doesn't know pork isn't kosher. So who are they trying to trick with that? Either you keep kosher, in which case you know that the pork can't be kosher, or you don't keep kosher, in which case you won't care if it's kosher or not. You know what I mean?
I might be wrong but the first thing that comes to mind are all the "fake" or "mock" products available today. Take for example vegan meatballs or the like. Someone who might not be paying attention or perhaps a recent convert might see something such as a pork product with a kosher-label and think "maybe this is a mock-product?". I can especially see how a recent convert who's still "learning the ropes" might fall prey to these types of tactics. The reality, unfortunately, is that this isn't exclusive to kosher and non-kosher products either. We are all being tricked to one extent or the other by similar tactics (even those of us without special dietary rules). Many of us have no idea what we're actually putting in our bodies, we just assume and trust (and hope?) that we're not being lied to - and these greedy corporations are more than happy to take advantage of that trust.
I love to learn! This Catholic was offended that someone would slap a kosher label on a ham or pork product! What audacity! Thanks again for teaching me more about your faith. I have started to to clean and prep food as soon as I bring produce home. As a result, I am losing less fresh food. Thanks for the tips!
As a non-Jew I had only a surface understanding of what being kosher entailed. I was surprised to learn of the pork gelatin, but was shocked to learn that anyone would put a kosher symbol on pork products. What. Sleazeball thing to do!
I love to learn! I am Christian, Sarah, but I tend to buy Kosher as I trust its purity. My Grandfather, raised on a farm, taught me that meat should always be Kosher. I have always enjoyed Hebrew National's commercial "We answer to a higher law!" As a history teacher who has taught about the meat industry in the early 20th century, I wouldn't be caught eating hot dogs that weren't Kosher. Thank you, Sarah for "frum it up". G-d bless you.
Loved this! I learned a lot. As a Reform Jew, I eat "Kosher Style" and I also eat mostly vegetarian with the exception of very occasional fish. I wasn't surprised by the gelatin situation. I was surprised that my non-dairy creamer would be considered dairy. I was also surprised by counterfeit kosher symbols. That is just crazy, people will do anything to make a profit.
An interesting thing about non-dairy products: many contain sodium caseinate, a milk derivative, or other things like whey, I guess to make it taste more real? It's very frustrating.
Same, my wife and I try to keep a vegetarian diet most of the time as it makes keeping kosher easier and it also helps the environment a little but we can't resist a good Salmon. We also happen to be lactose intolerant so if you are interested in vegan cheeses that tastes good and is kosher Violife is a really good one. As for milk, ice cream and other dairy stuff I recommend NotCo also kosher and super tasty.
I let out the world's most audible "OH NO" as soon as you showed the ham products with the Kosher stamp. I always love seeing these types of videos, you explain everything in so much depth and in such a pleasant and delightful way! Always look forward to learning something with each one! :)
Admittedly, I said, “Oh, (bleep!)” at that one. Talk about a low-down, dirty rotten cheat move! I can’t imagine what went through those manufacturers’ minds!
Thanks for the great video, Sara! I am atheist but I intentionally buy a lot of kosher products because they tend to contain far fewer ingredients and the ingredients being used are cleaner and safer. The idea that a company is using fake kosher marks is horrible. If I notice that in a future shopping trip, I will be going all "Karen" with the store manager and will do my best to get that product discontinued!
Does anyone else think that any company who uses a fake Kosher symbol is one of the most anti-Semitic moves ever?! SMH!!! Its both evil and sad! Sara ❤I love to learn❤ and ❤I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! ❤ (Your kiddos did a wonderful job being your assistants... please tell them GOOD JOB)!
No I don’t think it’s meant to be an anti-Semitic move ever. I believe it’s based on greed (money) just as things are mislabeled/misleading on other products.
@elsands9774 it doesn't have to be intentional for it to be antisemitic. I'm sure none of these companies have any goals other than maximizing profit, but they're maximizing profit by preying on the less astute of the Jewish community, amd that definitely seems antisemitic to me
I cleaned strawberries in a kosher manner. I could not BELIEVE how dirty and full of bugs they were!! I will never just rinse them. Thank you for sharing your culture with us! God Bless you and your family!!!
Wow! Fake kosher labels?? How rude! 😮 Seriously, that is terrible! One of my areas of study is Food Science and Nutrition, yet was surprised by plant based dairy and frozen veggies being objectionable. Labeling the gelatin source is indeed a plus. Kosher eating can be quite more expensive also. Hoping you enjoyed your purchases..😉❤
Unfortunately food fraud is very common, even when she pointed out the olive oil there are a lot of fakes, were they may be made from a combination canola oil etc, honey fraud is another one
I had a best friend when I was younger who was an Orthadox Jewish person and your channel has given me a better understanding on her and her family's faith. They were very open and understanding with my questions but I was like 12 so the deeper understanding was lost to me. You are great. Thank you
I love to learn! Thank you so much for explaining your kosher foodlaws! I never knew how many variables you need to take in account! Thank you for teaching us, and making your channel a safe space to learn!❤❤
As a non Jewish person and a parent I love videos like yours! They help me teach my children a little about differences in the way people live and express their faith. So from the bottom of my heart thank you!!!
Pretty amazing how you are able to remember so many dos and don’t. But I’m sure if that’s all you’ve ever known it must be like second nature to know exactly what to buy and not buy. Thank you for such an in-depth video, can’t imagine how long it took you to prepare for it and edit it all. You are loved from Texas 🤠
I love to learn! At first this seemed like really difficult and so many rules. Then I realized, we should all be this mindful of our food. Even if we do not follow Kosher laws, it is so good for all to be more aware of what we buy and eat. It can increases gratitude for food and life itself. It can uplift our health abd well-being as well. TY Sarah!
Not Jewish or Kosher, and it all seems really complicated at first, but when my daughter was small and my husband was healing from some health issues, we had a list of things we avoided - soy, artificial dyes, refined sugar, corn syrup, added weird meat products (carageean yay!), local/grassfed and more - and it became a habit to read sources/labels/etc, you get into a routine pretty quickly and it becomes double checking to make sure products/companies haven't changed. The biggest issues was the meat, because we only ate local beef that hadn't been on a feed lot and local chicken that had been raised on an actual farm. I really hope to go back to shopping this way soon, but inflation is kicking our bums. (Pork in candy is just gross, lol)
When I worked for a JCC for a few years, one of my coworkers who wasn't Kosher would rail against some of the bad oils in their food. Orthodox Jewish women would tell her they didn't have a choice unless they bought or ate mostly fresh food. She said you should try to rally to have them healthier. That said she also wrote manufacturers of non kosher foods too. It seemed a lot of the kids food had hydrogenated oils in them.
I agree with you Deb 110%. There needs to be a serious revision in the US and world wide educating people as to the harmful effects of certain food oils that most people don't realize are very bad to consume. But at least we as the consumer can find out from reputable sources. 💖
I love to learn. I realize I never thought about the pots and pans at a vegetable prep plant. Despite that I knew about the dishes and pots on kosher homes.
I love to learn :) When I was a kid, my mom once grew broccoli. When she went to boil it, all these neon green worms came crawling out. She was so disgusted we never ate broccoli again (which was no hardship for me, because I hate broccoli). I started paying attention to the symbols when I go grocery shopping and have found that most of my diet is actually kosher, because I have IBS and I have to follow a very strict diet to control it. Here in the USA, 'natural flavor' is usually code for 'high fructose corn syrup', because food manufacturers know people don't want it in their food, but high fructose corn syrup is cheaper than actual sugar. It goes by a number of names, and a product can actually legally advertise itself as saying "no high fructose corn syrup" while still actually containing the ingredient -- they just list it under another name.
EEEK! I did not know that! Being diabetic, I avoid HFCS as much as possible. NOW I will have to dig deeper to find products without it. THANK YOU for the heads-up!
I LOVE TO LEARN! I was shocked by the 'kosher pork' ( say what now?) but I was most surprised by regular frozen vegetables NOT being considered Kosher due to preparation.
I am shocked that there are companies faking Kosher symbols, especially on pork products. I am a Christian and I know that eating pork is against Jewish food laws. Have a blessed week and restful Shabbat.
I didn’t know allergens weren’t listed more clearly in Canada. It’s so easy to spot milk in products here in the UK. I’m going to look up certifications in the UK and look out for them in the supermarket tomorrow
I did not know that gelatin was an animal product and can come from pork! One of my best friends is Jewish and I am going to pass that information on to her ❤ thank you for sharing your knowledge and for always being so kind and keeping your viewers in your prayers
This was such a fun video! In college, I took several Judaism classes. The first semester had a lot to do with dietary laws. It was my all time favorite class. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Thank you for the education. We are not Jewish yet my mother taught me to never mix fish and milk. She learned from her grandmother. We are descended from the Amish. I love to learn.
Traditional Muslim medicine(Unani) too forbids mixing of fish and milk. The books says it becomes poisonous for the body when you mix both the ingredients.
Hello Sarah Thank you for yet another informative video. One can see how much effort and love you put into it! I didn't know that there were so many different kosher symbols and so many problematic products. So there's still a lot of responsibility asked from the client. As a muslim it's definitely less complicated for me (halal is kind of "kosher light" I'd say since we can mix meat and dairy) but still we need to check every product as there's often false certifications or they use certain types of alcohol in bread, cake, candy,... as preservatives which is not permissible. I live in Switzerland near a jewish neighborhood - they're very religious and take quality very seriously- and I use to buy my products there because as long as they're alcohol free I'm good to go 😊
I love to learn! The fake kosher labels saddens me, the disrespect of dietary restrictions for the sake of profit. The deliberate inclusion of more bug products in processed food certainly does not make matters easier.
Sara Malka We hope you and your family and loved ones are safe with all the fires. My sister and I have found a few scrub daddy's for you in blue and in orange we don't get red at all where we live not even on the official website so orange and some in green too. We are sending them off to your PO box from the description box. Thank you for all you do to bring joy to us ❤️.
I was JUST about to ask where to send them. I found a bunch of Red, Blue and Green scrub daddy packages in Ottawa :):) I will send them to the P.O. box 📦 Thanks Libby for bringing this up.
I love to learn. What happens if you accidentally eat something not kosher. I think it would be so hard to be positive on all things. Thank you for sharing with us all. Have a blessed Shabbat tomorrow.
Please explain why no milk and fish together? I still have difficulty with the no meat and milk period, i.e. why no chicken and milk, looking at the original scriptures - 'Do not boil a kid in it's mother's milk.' Exodus 23:19, Exodus 34:26, and Deuteronomy 14:21. I understand there are those who have tried trickery, but as a person who is crossing over, this has been a struggle to explain to family and friends.
The non mixing of the food groups is not new, but I don’t get it at all. I love to learn. I have missed your videos an$ did not know you had been hacked. I’m sorry that happened to you. It was undeserved and a real pain. Stay you, stay wonderful and thank you for sharing your life with me. I’m a simple Kansas woman who is religious, modest and raised a family. I’m in my tween years, tween kids and grandkids. So my time is my own. I love your videos. Thanks for sharing.
Thank-you, Sara Malka. I immediately contacted the distributor of the award winning EVOO from Crete to ask if it is cold-pressed. And in the process found a bigger container at a better price. Thanks for the differences between Sephardi & Ashkenazi. Your videos are like a personal tutor for those of us not raised observant.
This was really interesting. I loved to learn all that. I'm not sure I could ever be kosher - on the occasions I've tried to be vegetarian, I've gone cross-eyed just trying to read the labels to avoid the meat-inclusive products. You have my deepest respect. Thank you for taking the time to introduce me to a new world. It's appreciated.
I love to learn! I found it fascinating to learn how disciplined and informed every shopping trip to a non-Jewish grocery store has to be for you to ensure you're buying kosher food. Thank you for another great video! 😊
I love to learn. I have just begun my Orthodox conversion process and today feeling very alone and hoping I am pleasing HaShem in what Im doing.....a BIG bus pulled out in front of me and it had written on the whole side in huge writing..... YOU ARE LOVED. So I came home but still feeling a little flat and decided I would like to relax and listen to one of your videos as you have the most relaxing tone that destressing.... thankyou for the words at the end... YOU ARE LOVED...I really needed that today.
Did you laugh or get upset seeing the kosher certification on the ham? My first instinct would be laughter as it was so obvious no one reading the labels would really make a mistake. But then mad cause of trust issues.
I've always wondered about the truthfulness of the Kosher labels. Thank you for clarifying. I was surprised to learn of the marshmellows, frozen veggies and raw veggies. Thank you for sharing from your heart. Blessings Always ❤
I actually knew about gelatin being non kosher. I am an educator and have served children with dietary restrictions (though this was keeping halal rather than kosher). I also had no clue that I have quite a few kosher items in my cupboards. I paused this video and the first thing I picked up had a kosher certification.
Thank you for making these videos and explaining so patiently and kindly! I’ve made mistakes in the past around the edible gifts I’ve given orthodox Jewish friends, your videos are so helpful in my understanding of how to navigate and understand kosher law so I don’t make the same mistakes in the future ☺️
I was quite surprised when you showed pork products that are labeled kosher by brands that make that product. That has to be illegal to label non-kosher products as kosher. Just to let you know, I find your videos very informative as someone who is not Jewish.
I love your videos - they are so interesting and I always learn something. ❤ I don't keep kosher, but I am so upset on your behalf that there are counterfeit labels on foods. Some are obvious ("kosher" pork???) but others are less so. It's infuriating.
Our family often say, if you accidentally eat bugs or ants, we will become like a dumb to memorize facts and knowledge from books or scripture, not good for any students prior examination. That's why the leaf must be washed thoroughly until the tiny dark dots is gone before cooking.
The broccoli and berry insect revelation was so good to know - and such a shock to me!! I’m almost 40 but just now learned of it - I paid more attention last time was horrified to still see all these super tiny beige bugs moving around on my raspberries after thorough washing x3! 🤢 Horrified to see the counterfeit kosher labels exists - that’s awful. This was so interesting!! Thank you!!!
I love to learn! Thank you so much. The gelatin issue came up in vitamins some years ago. I worked for a conpany that changed everything to a plant based gelatin.
I absolutely loved learning more about kosher shopping and eating. Thank you Sara for another wonderful video and for all the effort you put in. I would love to know what the procedure is if you unintentionally consume non- kosher foods
I have learning about the kosher vegetables and fruit. As a Catholic who grew up in a Jewish community I love learning about the Jewish traditions and religions. I love learning.
I love learning! I’m shocked that there is a whole “counterfeit” Kosher food industry. I’m also rather disgusted by the whole bug in food issue 😅 I will start looking for Kosher broccoli 😊
Love! I so adore your most informative sharing. I as well feel so welcomed by your kindness positivity and warmth. I wish for those parties like you have with husbands on one side…. Women on other side. ( the comments section on the video you shared about that wouldn’t allow comments)….It just looks like less of “competitive” feelings. The Synagogue is beautiful. Thank you for letting me in and all the learning I came away with. Be well. I look forward to your next video.
I love to learn hi Sara I hope you are well and your family too. I didn't realise how many foods contain gelatin for animals. A very useful video thanks 😊 xx
i am so happy you have learned something today sweet Fran about How many products contain meat product through derivatives like gelatin! it is definitively not common knowledge! have. blessed week sweetie!
I love to learn! Thanks again for your wonderful and informative videos. I knew a little bit about Kosher despite being Christian, but it's obvious there's much more to it than I realized. Though I don't keep Kosher, I am vegan and gluten-free, so I am very accustomed to having to read labels and wonder what the sources of some of the ingredients are. I can definitely sympathize with you! There are phone apps call Vegan Pocket and Is it Vegan that allow the user to scan the bar code of a product and see what all is in it and where these things are sourced from. However, these are not as useful as they sound, as often for the chemical ingredients that may be sourced either from animal or non-animal sources, the app doesn't know either. I'm appalled that producers will label things Kosher that are not Kosher. I imagine that in the US, mislabeling products is probably illegal, but when the producers are on the other side of the world, there's probably not much that can be done about it. And the audacity of the producers in some of your examples...to label a product containing pork as Kosher! Anybody who knows the least thing about Jews (or Muslims) is that they are not allowed to eat pork. I remember from some of your previous videos that when preparing food, you scrutinized things for the presence of insects. It never occurred to me that something like broccoli would make that an almost impossible task. One question that occurs to me now.... Given the strictness and specificity of Kosher law, are you allowed to have household pets? As a long-time cat owner, I can tell you that the fine hairs from the cat's downy undercoat tend to float through the air (as would dander, also). I've probably eaten a cat's weight in fur and dander over the years, LOL.
I was definitely surprised by all the things that are kosher and all the things that aren't. And that you have to be very careful with the things that you do by but I was also surprised that most soft drinks are kosher and that tea and coffee were kosher as well. Because I do love my coffee in the morning but I also love my tea in the evening or during the day I think that's kind of fascinating. I also understand why you need to go to a meat or fish store, to get your kosher meat and fish up because there might not be enough options for you and that is interesting. I would like to see A kosher meat or fish store if you haven't already posted. Thank you for all of your wonderful videos once more. God's blessings.
Hi Sarah, I Love to learn. What I did not know is that you could not have milk with fish. Funny thing is, my mom never let us have cheese or milk with fish. Her ancestry only by two generations was Jewish. She passed away many years ago, but I would love to ask her the origin of not eating milk with fish. I loved when we had a fish dinner which was every Friday due to my past Catholic back ground. . I disliked milk and would be allowed to have water or a soda with our meal. Soda was a real treat since mom was very careful to make sure we ate and drank only good things and sugar items were a once a week treat. Also, thank you for the heads up on real kosher certification. Gosh, I never knew about the gelatin being made from pork.
I love to learn--I didn't know there were fake kosher labels, that some companies do that, they should be reported!!! I appreciate the video, and the valuable information. I'm not Jewish, but what I have learned about your facet of Judaism is beautiful, thank you for your channel, and keep it up!!!
I love to learn! Can't wait for the live... I treasure this time each week with our dear Frummies. Sadly, my partner didn't get the promotion. Maybe in the future. ❤
I like to learn, too. I've been learning a lot about Jewish culture from Sara that I never knew before. And have you noticed that Sara always sounds like she's smiling?
@Amelia Froehlich She does, doesn't she? And her voice is full of love and peace. She fairly radiates love, you know? I'm always so calm and happy after a video - and after the weekly live premiers, it's amplified. Thanks to Sara, I've been growing spiritually as well. I do love learning about her faith, and she never makes you feel out of place in any way for asking questions. It's safe, wholesome, and... wonderful. =D
I grew up in a Kosher home. Separate set of dishes/flatware for Passover, Milk and Meat were separate also for everyday use. But I had no idea about Jello, or that there were fake symbols on products. Being Ashkenazic I knew we had a bit different laws (cause I love broccoli ) but this video was an education for me. Every 3 months or so I get to visit home in Connecticut and look forward to going to The Crown Supermarket which is still my favorite Kosher Market. Just typing this I want kishke, knish and their store made gefilte fish.
I love to learn. I had no idea gelatin was from pork. I do avoid food and medication products from China, the ethics and standards are questionable. As always I have enjoyed your video, learned, and feel at peace. Many blessings to you and your family.
I’m glad you showed Just Egg is kosher. It is not actually an egg product but made with mung beans. They’ve been a lifesaver in our home with an egg allergic child.
I love to learn! I was surprised that companies are allowed to use fake Kosher marks on non-kosher food. Especially if they contained pork, shocking! Thank you, Sara, for the video. It was so informative. ❤😊
This was very informative. Makes me frustrated that there are so many companies that put kosher on there products and there really not kosher!! Thanks again for your help.
I had no idea that fake Kosher labels were a thing! I think because many groceries in the store are generally kosher, the symbols of kosher are ubiquitous on many products and thus manufacturers are just inclined to stamp a Circle K or whatnot on the label without considering whether the ingredients in the food line up with the laws of kosher. Sure does give a whole new meaning to the phrase "buyer beware".
I love your videos and the positive message at the end. I am a reform convert, and seeing this level of observance is helping me think of ways I can honor G-d with my own observance. Thank you so much for making these videos. Please know that you, too, are very loved.
Thank you for this super interesting video. I love to learn about religions, as i am an atheist, and your videos are a great source. As a vegetarian living with a vegan, i know the gelatin struggle and checking the ingredient lists for any animal products to well. Have a wonderful week.

Thanks for this informative guide! One thing that you didn't mention was natural pink coloring that may be made from the cactus beetle. That is definitely a no-no! 🤗🤗🤗
Sara, you are such a beautiful soul. I learn so much from you every video. This is such a safe peaceful place to hang out. Blessings and Shalom dear sister.
I love to learn! I was surprised by the fake kosher symbols. Thank you for explaining the different symbols. I read the ingredients because we have reactions to soy, carrageenan, BHT, MSG, and Red Dyes. I kept seeing the symbols but didn't know how to read them. I will say this about carrageenan, it can cause severe intestinal issues. Definitely something to be careful when consuming.
PLEASE make a video on checking grains like sugar beans rice flour and barley and how to store them and getting them without a hechsher and if in some cercumstance you don’t need to check and tools you use like sifters
I love to learn ❤ I’m not Jewish but learning about you’re religion, your joy, your devotion, your love for it, makes me want to be a better catholic. Thank you so much for these wonderful videos.

An Israeli jewish friend of mine recently told me that coca-cola, my only vice, is kosher. 😄
I love to learn! To me the biggest surprises were that milk might not be kosher, due to all the additives and extras that are added nowadays, and that some foods may inherit a "dairy" status because the machines used to process them are also used to process dairy.
