KOTOR Remake is CHANGING Darth Malak (and more) 

I absolutely LOVED Arcane, and SIlco - so I'm excited to see what he does with the character... But what do you think about everything in this video?

As a black woman I'd like to say I'd prefer to see new characters add to the game without gender and race swapping. The only character that should be gender and race swappable is allowing us to manipulate who Revan is and what she/ he looks like.

When you have to race and gender swap pre-established characters, that just means you don't have the skill to create a compelling character on your own and you have to stand on the shoulders of others.

I'd love to have the option of multiple "Revan" voices, as well as a non voiced option. Best of both worlds, imo.

I oppose gender and or race swapping of major characters. I already love these characters the way they are, regardless of their race or gender. If you are gonna be doing a large scale remake with extra content, simply add new characters and stories. I’m not opposed to any race or gender being in Star Wars, simply don’t change what I’ve loved for damn near 20 years. Frankly I think the obvious solution is to include Sleyhron. Boom, new opportunities for characters. Rather than change what people already love, add something new that I can fall in love with, without changing the time tested material.

If they remake KOTOR II then I can only imagine what the devs would think if they heard some of the lines from Nar Shaddaa, Onderon or just Kreia.

Personally I don't care in the case of Revan and Mitra Surik due to them being custom characters, but I do agree that for others it would have made more sense to add characters instead of changing existing ones, even if for some of them it makes no difference at all in terms of plot.

Jesus Christ Disney just loves to mess things up. Just make other characters instead of changing existing ones in KOTOR.

Calo Nord is one of the most iconic characters in the kotor series. I hope there will be a mod to change him back just to make it like normal.

Massive shame that Rafael Ferrer isn't reprising his role as Darth Jawline. His performance was easily a highlight of the original, perfectly balancing the menace and camp that make up a good Star Wars baddie. That being said though, my god. Spisak as Malak would be a terrific replacement. Hope this is actually the case for the final game!

Once modders can get to work, all I can say is that will be amazing. They still work on kotor 1 & 2. Gotta show love for the modders and their passion for it

There's absolutely NOTHING in the original game that is problematic. These people are crazy!! Well, can't wait to laugh with you and your community when you stream this game and point out those changes. xD

Something Lucas said a very long time ago was that he didn’t want boardroom execs corrupting his baby. Now gender and race swaps don’t bother me too much, (distracting at best). What bothers me is that some corporate type found some of the dialog insensitive. Probably some billionaire phoned it in, they almost always get their way.

Yeah I fully agree, I feel there's no reason to change the gender and race of characters that are core important to the story, like they could have just added new characters in some side quest or whatever instead of just gender swapping Calo and Saw.

Race and gendering swapping of any characters that aren't weightless NPCs is unacceptable for me. Full-stop. I had a feeling that this was going to inevitably happen, and if they were that adamant about doing so with Calo Nord then I'm willing to bet there are even more significant and drastic alterations to other characters as well. KOTOR should be like the Sand People history, whenever it is retold, it has to be 100% unchanged or face death. I think a remaster with additions would have been far better than a remake, keeping all the same old voice files etc.

I just hope it isn't woke. But if they are going to push THE MESSAGE they better not change the original characters and if they do I will just play the original game. If they decide to I will lose all trust in the future of Star wars. People just want a good story which they ALREADY HAVE if they just expand on the story a little and with modern game mechanics the game will be GREAT.

Changing Saul is a bit sad given that would mean losing Robin Sachs' performance in the game which was nice, RIP

Hope they use the same voice actor for Revan as the one from SWTOR. Amazing voice for Revan in the game.

They wanted to change characters, not because they wanted to have more women and POC, but because they wanted less characters to be white men.

How about this? Maybe Calo Nord could get swapped with the assassin Selven, who Zax the Hutt gives you a bounty on in Lower Taris. As for Saul Karath, maybe he will become Salina Karath, a woman who literally tried to seduce Carth to the Sith and failed. That would give Carth trust issues with a female PC for sure.

These infos are great at most. There is yet one thing I am still afraid of. And that's about HK-47. How much he will be changed, and is Kristoffer Tabori returning as his voice?

Statement: I don't really mind the changes to Calo Nord. He is a hired merc who only shows up 4 times in the game and is a hired gun of Davik Kang, who only shows up once. All I know about him is that he is a bad ass in his own right, has a rivalry with Canderous, and he holds a grudge for you leaving him to die on Taris. I don't think he had much of an impact on the main plot other than being an obstacle to be overcome and to race and sex swap him will not be that big of a deal. Though I am curios if Aspyer will be doing more with him than what Bioware did with him in the 1st game. Disgusted Statement: I, however, cannot say the same for Admiral Saul Karrath. A monster of a meatbag who is directly and indirectly responsible for the destruction of several planets, the ending of billions, if not trillions of lives, including Carth Onasi's wife, and the advancement of Sith tyranny and suffering throughout the galaxy. In addition, he also tortures you and your love interest. His impact on the plot is substantial and to delineate his character at all will take away and distract from the story. you have a story that works. one that many people love and replay for over a decade. you decide to remake the game to have a more up to date version. WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU CHANGE STUFF LIKE THAT? Add more quests, lore, maybe evene a voiced revan (but please make it optional for a semi-retro experience) and fill the maps with more life. That would be all i could ever ask for. I dont want a different combat system and i dont want any established character changed. Why even? There are already strong men and women of many different races included, non humans too. This is Star Wars after all. If games have to meet certain quotas in the future, i will just continue playing my old games and spend my money otherwise.

The Calo and Malak changes worry me extremely because if they're gonna just change essential characters for the fun of it, it shows that they don't respect the game one bit. I'm honestly thinking it would be better if the remake is cancelled.

They should pave the way to a more connected story. Mentions of Arren Kae, the Exile and Malachor (from the Jedi perspective) are important in my view. It makes total sense that they have to make a KOTOR 2 remake. Get Chris Avellone onboard. Disney being disconnected from the fan base is a concern that needs to be addressed. This is also a perfect opportunity to mention Zayne Carrick and Jarael.

Making content "for modern audiences" is exactly why a lot on recent content is flopping HARD. As for race and gender, as long as it's non-central characters, like the NPC who is trying to sell the Wraid Plate on Tatooine, I have no problem with it. However, if it is a central character, I see it more like the developer saying, "Hey, we heard you like representation, so here, have some sloppy seconds." People would be losing their minds if Jolee Bindo's race and/or gender was being swapped, I don't like this double-standard placed on Karath and Calo. Voiced Revan, I'm fine with it, the fan film Rescue Mission has a brilliant voice-actor for Revan, would love to hear from him again, guy deserves more credit. It can absolutely work.

And I DO HAVE a problem with changing sexzs and gendoroeids. Why Calo Nord or Saul Carath would be changed to women? That’s crazy! If they remade Alien movie I wouldn’t want them to change Ripley to a man. If a character’s well written you don’t need to change them. If they pull through with this it’s a pass from me.

Saul Karith change is so weird because he is a pretty big character in the old republic comics. Calo nord isn't going to be as intimidating with Cala Nordess counting up to 3 with a Karen voice. Dumb changes, just add new content. KOTOR was already pretty diverse imo too

This was exactly my concern about the remake. I always find it ironic when they talk about expanding diversity in Star Wars for when you consider the all aliens, there are very few properties as diverse. You have blue ones, green ones, reptile ones, etc etc. What they are really saying, the "human" characters need to be more diverse. On heroes side, it is already diverse. So, yes.. if you are expanding the game then create NEW characters of different genders or races instead changing some who already are. Voice actor changes.. I understand some may happen so no issue there. From this video, there seems to be a good faith effort to have the original cast back, this is all we can ask.

If this stuff is true (especially the Disney changes) I am 100% checked out of this project. If I ever feel like playing KOTOR I’ll just play the original, it’s still a great game.

I do dislike the "diversity washing" that Disney seems insistent on with various IPs when it's done just to "check the diversity box"

If they really want to add a female bounty hunter going after you I think it would be cool to switch the roles of Calo Nord and Selvin instead. Yeah it’s different, but she is already an established character on Taris and I think would add a lot of opportunities to flesh out her character rather than just being an assassin you kill on the spot.

I think the changes are going to be hit or miss for me. I think revan having a voice is great. I feel like silent protagonist are not what they used to be and I think the changes to Saul and Cali feel pointless and empty tbh but I won’t be upset about it. I do think we will see something about the game at either the vga awards or whatever e3 is going to be called next year on the project for sure

They should get the same actor who voiced revan in swtor for the remake

As far as Revan, I either like, or am indifferent to the info mentioned in this video. The voice acting is a plus. The expansion on Revan's backstory is a plus. No connection to TOR is something I wouldn't really care about one way or the other. Personally, I still really enjoy TOR and didn't mind what they did with Revan's character. To me, he was still the badass I remembered him being, even with the backstory changes. I also thought that he went out well, having a hand in finally destroying the Emperor for good. With that said, I also never really felt as though setting the groundwork for TOR would be at all necessary for this remake. Canonically, Revan isn't even supposed to remember any of that TOR backstory stuff until some time after the original KOTOR ends. So not bringing any TOR info up in the KOTOR remake makes sense. Those who don't care for TOR can continue to pretend like it doesn't exist, and for those of us that do like TOR, KOTOR remake seemingly won't be breaking TOR's established continuity and lore. It seems to be a win/win for both sides. That's good. As for Calo Nord and Saul, I'm with you on this one. I don't really see why they felt the need to do this, and I think it's pretty silly. At the same time though, I wouldn't say I'm bothered by it. Having Calo Nord and Saul be women isn't going to somehow ruin the game for me. I was never too attached to those characters to begin with, so it's whatever as far as I'm concerned. An odd choice for sure, but it doesn't really make anything worse. The one thing I am worried about is their desire to fix problematic writing. Honestly, off the top of my head, nothing in the original KOTOR ever struck me as particularly problematic. So I'm not entirely sure what they'd even want to change. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Great video, for me if it's going to break continuity with the comics before it and kotor 2 then I'm out. I'll try it but when I do a series playthrough I'll be sticking to the originals

I knew from the start they were gonna do that, not exactly to Carla Nord or Sally Karath (I'm assuming that's their names now) but they were going to race and gender swap someone, it's Disney.... I too would be completely fine adding new characters to the story as long as it doesn't completely derail what we grew up with but still

Its been said already, but the voice actor for male Revan should be the same one from SWTOR, he felt very central to how that game represented him, and after playing KOTOR after hearing hivoice, makes sense for that dialogue. Also, if there is any way to incorporate the voice for Darth Vitiate (the sith emperor) into a flashback when Revan and Malak find him, that would be a nice nod too.

If Revan is to be voiced in the remake I'd want Keanu. Will it ever happen, probably not. That said he was BA in the Matrix and John Wick movies. I honestly think he could pull off such a complex character as Revan NEAR flawlessly. Again will it ever happen, doubt it.

My friend intriguing video and I think it's a good idea that Revan be voiced in the game since all the characters are voiced and I've been asking the same thing about Meetra Surik being voiced. I also agree with you that to many changes are unnecessary and that the remake focus more on adding scenes, dialog and story to the original game. Whatever happens it seems unlikely that the KOTOR remake will come out on in April 2023 for it's 20th anniversary but hopefully it won't be a long wait for KOTOR fans

If they're really changing the races and genders of established characters then there's no way this game is gonna be Legends like we were told it'll be. Calo Nord I don't care much for, because he doesn't appear in anything besides the original game and he's a minor enough character that altering him won't change anything, but Saul Karath has a significant role in the KotOR comics by John Jackson Miller which dive deeper into his history and his character, changing Karath's race and gender would obviously be opposed to his appearance in the KotOR comics as well as the (very) few references to him in other sources. If the KotOR remake turns out to just be the Canon version of the story, then OK I guess (I'm still massively opposed to the changes, but whatever, ew continuity, new interpretations of old characters), but if this game is supposed to be Legends, it already doesn't fit into the established Expanded Universe lore. I sincerely hope this is something that gets changed later on, before real development begins. If the devs wanna add more people of color, women, etc, that's great, I'm not against that at all, just do it with new characters. Add cut content like Sleheyron back to the game and write whole new characters, add Yuthura Ban as a companion, there are plenty of new and fresh ways to add diversity to KotOR without tampering with the characters who have already been established. I also would actually like to see the remake connect to SWTOR, if only so that the game can maybe rectify some of the mistakes made by the "Revan" novel, and expand more on Vitiate's plans for Revan and Malak, just get to see more of that history. The lore is there, and SWTOR is essentially the spiritual continuation of the KotOR duology's story, so not connecting the two seems like a weird or poor decision unless the KotOR remake is 100% canon and not tied to Legends at all, thus being able to keep KotOR canon without canonizing SWTOR as well. Like I said, I sincerely hope whoever you spoke with is blowing smoke, or that maybe Saber Interactive will scrap some of these design choices now that they're supposedly at the helm. KotOR means a lot to me, more than I can really describe, and I know there are a lot of people who feel the same way about it that I do, and I want to see this game thrive and be amazing, and hampering it with needless lore retcons and character changes just shouts that the game isn't gonna be the same.

I hate when they feel they have to shoe horn in a race swap for the sake of Diversity.. MAKE A NEW character give Nord a partner back round characters are fine to swap all over but key characters need to stay the way they are. I did like the fact that in the first 2 games you didn't know if Revan was male or female much like Mitra in KTOR II. Kara said several times in the game He / she when talking about Revan. If Revan is going to speak are they getting a man and a women to do the voice or are they not giving the player the banality to play male / female character?

If Revan is voiced, maybe it’ll be more like a Mass Effect dialogue experience. Also, I don’t recall anything problematic when I played through it a year ago. Can’t wait to see how they cringe it up.

with all remakes there are going to be good thing a bad thing, I just say it'll all depend how the characters are portrayed and if they feel like the same character they replaced.

Revan being a voiced protagonist is a red line for me. Half the reason why KOTOR was compelling was because you were able to put yourself in the place of the character. So, when Malak revealed that the character was Revan, it felt as if *you* the player was Revan. Voicing Revan only adds a disconnect between myself and the protagonist

Since John Cygan is dead; I think either Ron Pearlman or Michael Cudlitz would be fantastic replacements to voice Canderous Ordo.

This was one of my first thoughts when I pre-ordered. What's sad is that they probably had more reveals or trailers planned for this date, and wanted to toys pre-orders to drop alongside them, but with the game delayed indefinitely, the Black Series had to just carry on with the product alone.

I don’t understand wtf would they change characters??? If they let you choose your sexuality at Ruven, some heat would say that’s a change, but I would say it’s OK because of the amount of costumeality in the original game Revn is supposed to be a projection of the player he’s not an established character exactly . So, just say you can chitchat you can choose his sexuality is OK with the change the gender and race of two main characters that are established is totally messed up Callum Nord, and soul carrot, or not projections of the player. There a Star Wars characters they should not be changed like that.

The need for 'representation' is overblown. People who 'need' characters in media to 'look like them' in order to identify with them need to learn some Goddamn self-esteem. Pandering to narcissists who need to see themselves everywhere *never* ends well.

Honestly I'd prefer they take as much time as possible. To really straighten everything out and have a solid game upon release. There's plenty to keep us busy till then 👍

Nobody asked for a voiced revan, nor wanted one, so this is great.

I'm glad Revan's being voiced, but I would like to still have the option to choose gender, as I often do "canon" playthroughs of one alignment and "non-canon" playthroughs as the other gender for KOTOR I and II. I think they have enough cash to have male Revan and female Revan voiced xD Also, the political correctness in dialogue is disappointing to hear--I don't recall anything that could be considered offensive today in the original game :/ As for the gender/race swaps of Calo North and Saul Karath, LOL. Why? Aw, jeez. I don't care about Calo, but I do care about Saul because Saul was a mentor for Carth. It's a little strange to have an adult woman being your mentor if you're a young male, aside from your own mother/family, obviously. It's just weird that they get to be so close now 'cause Saul was a huge deal for Carth--it's difficult to get that close to a woman and not be romantically interested. Are they going to disappear Carth's wife and kids from his backstory, too? I don't know man, it's just weird. I don't like that. Calo is not a big deal, but Saul is more iffy.

Every character with actual presence will be turned female. As in The "good" gang leader in in Taris, the jedi masters with the exception of Yoda & the old angry white guy and many more. The obvious solution here is to simply add more characters no one would mind. But that is not how the "modern" writers do it. As been proven the last 10 years, they can not make 1 single new thing, they can only take something and change it. I don't know if it's because they simply refuse to add content, work or if they only want to run around sticking tits on everything and or painting them dark.

It will be hard to hear a different voice actor than John Cygan for Canderous Ordo. But honestly I don’t think this game needs to be remade, as cool as it could be, I think they’re just going to mess up a classic. “Changes” were not so great in the sequel trilogy and I don’t think they’d serve KOTOR much better.

Some of my fears have been confirmed and I’m sure more will be in the effort to create a game for a so called ‘modern audience’ Honestly I would rather this game get cancelled and the original remain untarnished by a poor remake

As long as we actually get the Female Revan and Juhani romance, and they don't mess with the story too much, I'll be fine. If they want more representation, fleshing out Star Wars' first canonically lesbian character (pre-KOTOR becoming Legends) should be the most simple way to do that.

While I’m excited about some of the things that are reportedly in development for the Remake, I’m definitely not excited about the whole “needing to reflect the modern era” crap from Disney. Having more diversity is fine, but doing it at the expense of gender/race swapping key characters is outrageous. I’m still hopeful there will be enough good content to make up for some of these decisions.

I hope they make the remake for xbox to since it was originally for pc and xbox

Disney has no place to consider anything problematic as long as they continue to minimize and borderline erase the role of their minority actors and characters. Their marketing in China for the Sequel movies were an absolute disgrace.
