This was the end of conservative news director Gary Elion's era of low ratings which in mid-1979 transitioned to progressive news director Bill Applegate's era of number one ratings. I began working as a newstape video editor at KPIX on July 24, 1978 and saw it all, the exhilarating rise and years later, the depressing fall of the Channel 5 Eyewitness News Machine!
