Tuurlijk is het 1 Gigabit. Snelste wat KPN nu biedt is 4 Ik weet nog dat onze systeembeheerder in 2001 het kantoor binnen kwam jubelen - "We hebben breedband internet!!!" - 1 Mbps over adsl-1 😂, hiervoor moesten 50 man over een enkel ISDN-2 lijntje alles doen

Interesting. In UK it's a little different. The network provider will supply the fibre service that includes the optical to RJ45 converter (ONT). The ISP will then provide the router which will connect to their service over the fibre provider using some form of encapsulation. In my case, this is PPPoE. I replaced their router with my own Ubiquiti Edgerouter.

Not if it’s a business connection.

What type of fibre connection is that you have? Is that full fibre to the home? And what type of old style phone connection do you use in NL because it evidently is not German TAE, or US RJ11 (which we use here in Costa Rica as well). I personally got fibre to the home, with the box that connects the fibre connection with the router being passive though, because it doesn't need external power.

The old phone lines used simple 2 wire comms over rj11 connectors in-house, but the wall outlet was a trapezoidal 4-pin, developed by PTT (former name of KPN) somewhere in the 1950's or so. Some people like me replaced them with dual rj-45 outlets for both 100Mbps network and a phone line (over a single cat 5e twisted pair cable).

1 Gbyte? So you got a 10 Gbit connection? Wow. ;) Can't you set the modem to bridge mode and only use pfSense? Or only use pfSense?

I don't think that's possible with the KPN modem/routers. I have no experience with model 12, but just like with VB's router, the earlier models have been configured to disable just about everything that you could change about it. Very useful for inexperienced consumers, but infinitely frustrating for power users like VB or you or me, who prefer to have as much control over their internet connection as possible. Personally, I find KPN's modem/routers a bit fiddly. Their main pre is that they usually work out of the box, their main con is that for more advanced customers, the lack of features that are enabled is frustrating to say the least. Also, the routers must be cheap as hell, because I have a spare one in my closet that I was specificall told not to send back to them. Apparently they have warehouses full of them...

KPN recently raised the Max speed to 4 Gbit per fibre. I was 1 Gbit, which is probably what Victor has. 4 Gbit only has merit if : 1. You have many people on your network raping the internet, and 2. You already have 5 or 10 Gbit in your home, which currently is still a bit too expensive for us poor budget bastards. I have the KPN 1 Gbit connection since 2020 and I've been exceedingly satisfied with it. Never had any serious outages, besides the occasional nightly interruption due to maintenance. I use a Raspberry Pi 4B with Openwrt - MUCH faster than the stock KPN experia boxes, especially when you're doing things that tend to choke up the NAT table (Bittorent etc) and still very low power consumption.

can confirm that switching from coax (VTR, missing chilean cousin of Ziggo) to fiber (symmetrical 1gb from Telefónica) is a whole world of difference I also had that very same Arris white box, you had to call to customer service if you wanted to use it as a bridge for another router

Got a Ziggo advertisement when I started this video. Nice try... we have FTTH for a year of 12 now I think and it worked flawlessy ever since. I pulled out all the coax cables in my house.

Such a shame it's KPN. That company sucks. Starting with their routers. And the fact they deliberately make it a pain to replace it with your own. Not to mention the fact the actively hindered the rollout of fiber for years.
@paulmichaelfreedman8334

It's NOT a pain to use your own router, that is BS. I got KPN Fibre in 2020 , and after testing the pipe with the experiabox, I immediately replaced it with a Raspberry Pi 4B with OpenWRT. Works like a charm, although it does require a bit more technical knowledge. KPN has manuals online how to set your own gateway's config to connect to KPN's gateway. I don't like KPN either, but to be honest they are not much of a hassle nowadays, Fibre rollout is near complete finally and that will serve us well for the coming decades. They also absorbed all XS4All personnel into their KPN helpdesk, and a lot of them are actual gurus. Fibre clients always have access to these guys if they wish to. And as someone who has worked in data networking for quite some years, I can tell when helpdesks are bullshitting me or not, but in their case their knowledge actually surprised ME sometimes.

Have you found the technical instructions online with all the details? Since the vrije modem service stuff this is published info.

In France, we get all our equipment from an Internet service provider and it is basically impossible to replace it with another/different brand without getting a PhD in this matter :) But in principle, there is no point, since we get symmetrical fiber optic 8Gb/8Gb where in the router we have 4x2.5Gb and one connector that allows us to obtain symmetrical 8Gb on one computer. Plus Wifi 7. It costs 50 euros a month, but it's worth it
