I just got into K-Pop music culture in this past August. Before this, my only reference to K-Pop was a BOA album ("Only One") that I bought in my mid-twenties. Anyway, since August, I've met and interacted with some nice K-Pop fans (via social media). Also some long-time acquaintances of mine had "came out of the K-Pop shadows" once they heard that I like some songs. My buddies have been hyping up MNET's MAMAs as if it was like the Second Coming. The one common opinion was "MAMAs is better than any American award show". So, I had high expectations for this year's MAMAs... and I was disappointed. In my personal opinion, it wasn't better than any American award show. However, MAMAs wasn't subpar, when compared to any American award show. Well, with the music-related, American award shows. They're on the same level, for me. MAMAs do have "better window dressings" (sets, decor) also. I will say that the MAMAs is better than the Academy Awards, Golden Globes and all of the Emmys, though.
