Thank you so much for making all these excellent Rum videos 👍 I'm very lucky to have a huge liquor discount chain in my small South Australian town, it has a range of more than 20 Rum varieties👍 Ratu 5yr, Santiago de Cuba Añejo & Dead Man's Fingers Spiced are my favorites !
Kraken produces their own dark, spiced ginger beer to use as a mixer. When this is used and a wedge of lime added the drink is called a ‘Perfect Storm’. Unfortunately their ginger beer is not available everywhere but can be found at some online retailers.
Wasn't aware they made their own! I've tried lime and lemon juice and find it tastes a bit better to me with lemon. I "stole" the idea originally from my local coffee shop that does the same
Personally i never was a rum guy, but gotta say that i loved Kraken and like 99% of time time i drink it as a shot, with slice of lime and brown sugar, you just dip lime in to the sugar, drink and then bite the lime, enjoy !
I agree with you re the Dark and Stormy. For me, that's it's only use though. It's okay with Coke, but not brilliant. Deffo wouldn't serve it up in a Mojito though.
Any cola will mix well - including the Pepsi family. They all work fine. Supermarket brand colas are an interesting choice for more variety. I have tried it with Dr. Pepper, which is okay and a certainly palatable adventure, but stick with the regular cola types for the best enjoyment.
I prefer my Kraken over ice with a wedge or two of lime squeezed into the glass then dropped in it to infuse, Then add cold Full fat Coke (none of that zero sugar rubbish), The lime just adds that little extra something to it, To my mind it’s the only way to drink this wonderful rum.
1/4 mix for Rum and Coke is about right. I use 3 fl oz of rum and a can (12 fl oz) US of diet cola in a pint glass with a cube or two of ice (the cola is chilled). This rum, despite the high alcohol content, does not detract at all from the flavor, and actually adds vanilla notes which are quite welcome! One of my favorites.
I have to say I usually like rums with coke or punch but kraken I always drink neat such a nice drink I feel any mixer just gets rid of the flavour and it’s like having coke vanilla rather than rum
My favorite way to drink one of these (make sure you haven't had a lot of sugar)- mix 4 ounces of rum with a vanilla Pepsi nitro and use the resulting cocktail as a chaser for shots it'll have you going places in no time.
Ok, I've been drinking dark rum and dark spices rum for about 12 months now (in fact I think it is my pandemic drink!), anyway once people know you're into rum you always get asked what you think to Kraken! So after a year today was my first taste of it. I have to say that right off the bat I didn't like it (but Lidls Liberte is my fave in this price bracket), but after a few glasses (and I only drink them neat unless they are particularly bad rums) I actually started to enjoy it. Not as sweet as I like and I don't get too much vanilla, but I do get the hot spices (ginger, pepper and cinnamon). One of my top 5 though (but still lots more to try).
Never had a dark and stormy ,however I am a mule fan and my favorite ginger beer is fever tree by a long shot. Fever tree is by far the spiciest, most flavorful ginger beer that I've tried
I love Kraken Spiced Rum. My daughter has converted too. Gonna have to try this. I was a Pussers drinker but was gifted a Black Spiced Rum and never looked back!
I left a comment a few months ago why I liked Captain Morgan, and you were quite nice to thumbs up that comment.... I had just started having some drinks.....anyways, I work at a grocery store so I prefer to find good options for liquor to buy after I get done working......what has evolved for me is that my 'go-to' is Wild Turkey 101, and I don't like Captain Morgan spiced run so much anymore. I like it just fine, but I would prefer something with more flavor and more alcohol. Sailor Jerry's is good enough but I tried Kraken today. Obviously this grocery store that I work at does not carry the very best spiced rums, but I can get Kraken there. I liked it okay although ---- it was so much different than Captain Morgan/Sailor Jerry's vanilla dominant spiced rums. Kraken is at least more interesting, and does not taste so much like 'candy' that Captain Morgan does. I probably will be drinking more Kraken spiced rum.
I drink Old Hopking, with cinnamon Coca Cola, a sliced up lime, on large rocks. Or Fentimans with a sliced up lime, on the rocks with a dark stormy, black cloud of Old Hopking, on top.
Not a big drinker, actually more of a smoker; but Kraken with Coke is amazing. Since I’ve first tried it, I’ve been obsessed. Recently bought my 2nd bottle, great video
@@warrenpeace8729 Went ok, had almost half a bottle lol In terms of taste, quality, think I had better experience and pleasure from Captain Morgans black spiced, I remember it as more refined, just my opinion of course and don't remember my head hurting so badly the next day !
@@irishroverandthecrew omg your insane lol I’ve thrown up on Cap kraken never does that to me but to each their own I actually just bought Mount Gay for the first time One of the oldest Rums
Just to keep things balanced, I think the Whiskey club needs a brand with a similar origin story as Kraken....maybe Bigfoot Bourbon where the Bug Guy captured an old west Cargo wagon full of Whiskey crossing the frontier.........
Im kinda just an alcoholic so I drink it straight from the bottle and chase it with coke assuming I don’t gag, but im sure this stuff is amazing for mixing
This is my favorite, especially with Coke or ginger. I will say that the last few smaller bottles that I've had don't taste the same...seems heavier on the caramel, likes it's been formulated differently. Big bottles still taste the same. At least that's my excuse for buying them.
As a daily drinker and alcoholic your not wrong. Nips and little pint sized bottles typically taste a little weaker to me than when it comes out the big bottle. I'm convinced it's a little more concentrated.
+D Med 😂 I’m obv UK based and Kraken is very much 40% ABV here. I’ll be honest, I didn’t know it was a different ABV in the US, that makes no sense to me as it’d be a completely different product. 42% I could understand but not 47%. That now makes some of the other comments on the video Male more sense. Perhaps it is drinkable neat at a higher ABV?? Because our version in the UK, deffo not a Sipping Rum!! 😳🙈
@@StevetheBarmanUK For some reason a lot of high proof spiced rums are proofed down in the UK, but most people don't consider Kraken a sipping rum so it's probably much the same in flavor (then again a lot of people into sipping rums are kinda snobby).
Oh good lots of alcohol in this rum. I made my first batch of vanilla extract with this Kraken rum back in Sept of 2020. But I'll try the Foursquare next.
My favorite drink is the dark and stormy but I use Captain Morgan Special Reserve and Fever-Tree Premium Ginger Beer with a lime wedge or lime twist served over a clear large single ice cube.
At the liquor store close by my house, they sell little shooter bottles of this for around a buck fifty. My buddy drinks this paired with original Dr Pepper and says it's pretty good, but you are not a pirate if you drink your rum paired with something. DRINK IT RAW LIKE A MAN.
This was my first spiced rum I tried, I really like it straight because of the black pepper kick is there any spiced rums that you would recommend that have the same type of kick to the chest
It depends where you are?!! I keep recommending loads of stuff, but if you’re not UK you won’t get them. Something tells me you’re not UK, cos you certainly won’t get a “pepper kick” from the UK Kraken. It’s good, I like it, but there’s nothing complex about it.
@@StevetheBarmanUK I live in the United States, I agree with you that it's a very mild flavored rum, but as soon as you get it in your mouth it's spicy like black pepper then it mellows out then as you swallow you get the black pepper kick again and that's the first drink that I experienced that with would you have any recommendations of any other rums that do that, even if you don't think we can get it, I can special order it through my licor store because they are very good people who put their customers first
I mix it with Pepsi Max ... but I also drink it straight ( Neat ) ✌🏻🥃 I love your reviews Steve ... To me , you’re like the Jamie Oliver of the bar - lmao 😂 🤘🏻
I love how there's already a couple of ounces missing from that bottle. I wouldn't be able to help myself either. Do you have any idea how good that stuff is?!?!
Already done the video about 500 Cuts. Did it before Christmas last year. It’s lovely. Acquired taste and not a day to day rum. But in the winter it’s great.
Hey Mate... so you have to very clear on why you like Whiskey and Bourbon. First off... if you are that way inclined, DON'T start with a Spiced Rum. It'll probably be too sweet for you. Kraken is a Spiced Rum obviously. so you want to start with a real Rum, anything like Chairmans Reserve, Doorlys, Plantation Rum, Bacardi 4//8yo, Havana 7yo, Pussers etc etc. DON'T start with a Jamaica, that may be a bit too hardcore for you when you're just starting. But just get on the journey. This video may help; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VOMSoOvwUqc.html
Kraken is pretty trash. It has lots of added sugar, colour and flavouring. Very sweet and bland. Fine for mixing. If you like bourbon then you'll probably appreciate Jamaican rum. Try Appleton Estate for an inexpensive, easily found and decent sipper. Smith and Cross for higher end, Hampden Estate at the top end is sensational.
@@Bobble86 thanks for the reply. Well today at a local ABC liquor store i was given the recommendation of El Dorado age 12 years of wich i am about to try a small sample and after that pour a glass and pair with one of my favorite cigars
Hi Steve great video, I'm a big Kraken fan and you have given me food for thought with the Molasses mixer. I drink my Kraken with Ben Shaw's Dandilion and Burdock. I find it really complements the spices in Krackenand its a lovely drink😋🍹
Hello from Canada. I like Kraken quite a bit, though I am interested in “pure” or “proper” rum particularly. Selection is limited in my region, but I’m always on the lookout. I know nothing about online liquor shopping, is that even a thing? Anyway, this is fun, I’ll be watching more, thanks.
Sean, if you stop by on a Sunday Night Live Show, I have LOADS of Canadian Viewers! A really great bunch. Depends which part of the country your in, it'll either be 3-4pm or 1pm your time. (8pm UK)
I am drinking Kraken again today - WOW, this is nothing like Captain Morgan nor Sailor Jerry's !!!!! Vanilla, butterscotch, forget it!!!!! This is a musky, dank, bitter spiced rum!!!!! Lots of flavors and fabulous with a Coca-cola !!! But be careful because there is no 'candy' taste like with those others!!!!! This is a manly spiced rum !!!!
You can actually taste vanilla through all of that? Your palette is much more refined than mine. I get the cinnamon, and other than that, it tastes like black licorice to me..........undoubtedly there is an enourmous amount of flavor there !!!!!!!
Depends where you are. As i've said MANY times in the comments over the last few years... UK Kraken is VERY different to US Kraken! same as Sailor and Captains. Totally different Rums over here in UK
Man, I'm going to have to get some Kraken in the U.S. Just so I can shout, "Release the Kraken!" Yeah, I'd also just like to try some. I'm afraid my spiced rum experience is limited to Bacardi Oakheart. Kind of the Jim Beam of spiced rums. Suggestion for a good, but not brutally expensive sipping rum? I enjoy Knob Creek Bourbon and Glenmorangie Single Malt, so I'm not a total heathen. (Monte Python echo in there somewhere.)
Sooooo many options. BUT. If you're already a neat Whiskey/Bourbon fan, i suggest maybe Barbados to start. Doorlys 5/XO/12 are great starting points. XO and 12 are better than the 5. Then Maybe even Mount Gay. Not the Eclipse, but maybe the Black Barrel... I'm about to test that myself. But also, do you know what, Havana 7yo may not be a bad shout either. A lot drier and less "rich" compared to Bacardi 4/8.
Steve please do a video on blackstrap Rum? I have been enjoying Cruzan blackstrap, love it and only drink it on the rocks. As far as I'm aware it's pirate rum, made young. But would love to hear your spin on it! Cheers
Mark...Mate. I think Coca-Cola have delisted it. Thats not official, but i have it from reliable sources. Basically, i think its an AWESOME product, but (a) Coke/Schweppes are TERRIBLE at Marketing products. They never do marketing...like no one knew about this whole 1783 Tonic range apart from industry. and (b) They simply released it 2 years early. They expected Rum and Whiskey to pop much earlier than it has done. Whiskey was being touted for 2020, but i actually think it'll be more close to 2022 if at all. Look at the US... Jim Beam, JD and Crown Jewel are all over flavoured Whiskey. but with the exception of a few Lines, JD & JB in the UK aren't. Same with Rum. Spiced Rum just hasn't exploded yet. I started my reviews back in June 2019. I expected it to hit in the Winter, it just hasn't. And not because of Corona either. The Market has just been slow. But now DMF are dropping new flavours like its Christmas, There is potential Rum could kick off this Autumn. Anyways.... that doesn't help the Muscovado Mixer. RIP. But i think thats done for good.
Steve the Barman no worries, knew my eldest son was buying me Kraken for Father’s Day so went out to get your top recommendation, a bit of a wild goose chase but got me out the house for a good hour and half 🙈🤣
I use Kraken, always Kraken for a Dark & Stormy. My favourite Ginger Beer to use is Tesco's Own Brand of Ginger Beer as it is sugar-free or at least low sugar, if I can't use that then I use Old Jamaican Ginger Beer; either regular sugar-free/diet or Extra Fiery as it is a very strong Ginger Beer if I want more of a kick to my D&S drink.
Kraken is one of these drinks where the addition of Lime really elevates it to a whole new level! Kraken on it's own is very average, nothing special. Kraken & Lime is one of my favourite drinks 🖤
@@StevetheBarmanUK I like my Daiquiri's made with spiced Rum and a dash of orange bitters, Kraken especially makes for a very robustly flavored drink that almost tastes more like a Cola than a Daiquiri. 10/10 recommend.
