KrakenSDR is a 5-tuner coherent software defined radio based on RTL-SDR. It is the successor to the KerberosSDR and will be crowdfunded in 2021.
In this test KrakenSDR is used on a vehicle as a Radio Direction Finder (RDF) with a 5-element circular antenna array made up of mag-whip antennas on the roof of the vehicle. The Android app logs the RDF bearings generated by the KrakenSDR and calculates cross points, eventually determining an estimated location of the transmitter once enough data is available. The GPS navigation feature helps the driver safely navigate to the estimate location without having to look at the screen too often.
The demo also shows how the KrakenSDR automatically recalibrates on frequency change. Unlike the KerberosSDR it is no longer necessary to manually disconnect the antennas and then recalibrate during each frequency retune.
The DSP software running on the Raspberry Pi is entirely open source and available at github.com/krakenrf
The Android App is closed source but free to use for non-commercial use. play.google.com/store/apps/de...

I sincerely look forward to this new generation. I missed out on Kerberos, and we have a significant amount of work to do on locating sites on several trunked systems for the RadioReference database. This is going to be a critical tool in the field for that! Can't wait!

Shit I could use one of these for conventional discovery as well. Would make figuring out what business I'm hearing on a particular frequency go a lot faster.

Do not use a generic USB data cable, even if thicker and literally brand new. Caused my setup to not work. Switched to 3ft Anker I had laying around and all good. Also, have a good 5v USB powersupply, or two separate ones. I bought a 30w down buck converter with dual USB C legs. Also bought some 5A cigarette adapter power supplies for backup. These two issues can have you pulling your hair out!

This is awesome. I'm looking forward to eventually ordering one. I do have a question, and sorry if it was mentioned: would it be possible to have three cars, each with a unit which reports to the same server in order to dial into the source of the signal, quicker? Nice work.
@thekraken2086
@thekraken2086 Год назад
It will be possible once we have our cloud software released. The app or Kraken Pi server will upload data to the cloud server, and combine information there. We're still working on this software, so please keep an eye on the updates in the near future.

Looks good, want to find out if you can do a video with intermitted signals? We track stolen vehicles but use yagi antennas at the moment, wil this work with devices pulsing signals out? Any release date yet?

We're planning on releasing very soon, just finalizing a few things now. Yes pulsed signals do work but effectiveness does depend on pulse duration, pulse bandwidth and power. Very short

I can't find anything about it online but is it possible to do this with other SDR's? I am trying to find a software or something that will let me track signals but I only see for the Kerberos which I have to recalibrate every time I move.

What was the power output of the transmitter you were locating? Also interested to know what signal level strength you can track before the vectors go random? maybe -130dbm?
@thekraken2086
@thekraken2086 2 года назад
They were at about 17dBW EIRP output. The minimum power is difficult to say. If it's a direct LOS signal, with no multipath, it will likely still point in the right direction even if the signal is weak. If it's a high multipath environment, the bearings will be corrupted at higher signal levels.

Red/Green circle is POS of transmitter, but what is the black dot ? I have a number of issues with the DoA jumping all over on my Kerberos SDR - as it often does on Kerberos demos videos. Looks like Kraken is much more consistent ?
@bodstrup
@bodstrup 2 года назад
Sorry, re - viewed the video, got the black dot
@thekraken2086
@thekraken2086 2 года назад
The black dot is just an averaged location for the turn-by-turn GPS path planner, only used before there is any confidence in the TX location. In high multipath, or high movement environments (cars) the DoA will jump around a lot, that's just the physics of the situation. You need either move to a good location with good LoS and take a high quality reading, or use the app and essentially average many readings. That said, 5-elements instead of 4 does improve on multipath distortion, so Kraken will be a bit more accurate.

would it be possible to use for medium frequency /shortwave with appropriate antennas?
@JxH
@JxH 9 месяцев назад
Shortwave: "Where's the signal coming from?" From up there, the E-layer of the ionosphere. "How far do I need to drive?" 3000km, across the ocean. "How big does my car need to be to hold the antennas in a half-lambda circle?" About 10m across.

As long as there is unobscured space on the roof for the array sized for the frequencies you're using, it should work.

How well will this work for tracking moving multiple signals that are intermittent (say voice chat). All within 20 miles of an active base tower on the same frequency? Will there be too much noise?
@thekraken2086
@thekraken2086 Год назад
If multiple sources are being interleaved on the same channel it gets more difficult. You'd need to modify the code to somehow ignore the base tower transmissions on that frequency, and only focus on the mobile transmissions. If there is some sort of sub carrier squelch signal available that could be used. Then another problem is keeping track of each of the individual moving radios and matching them with the bearing logs. You'd need some way to ID each radio, again maybe with a squelch sub carrier signal, or similar. None of this is in the code since there are so many different systems, so it would totally be a custom coding job for your particular system.
@timhinchcliffe5372
@timhinchcliffe5372 Год назад
This is what I would want it for. It would need to be used in a "freestyle" mode where it won't bother trying to "guess" where it is on a map and the user just needs to use their head to "filter" out the signal corresponding to a particular voice. It looks like it sort of already does that.

Is there any significant benefit over a Kerbos 4 receiver setup?
@thekraken2086
@thekraken2086 2 года назад
Unlike KerberosSDR, KrakenSDR has built in switching hardware that when combined with the new software, will automatically achieve sample and phase calibration without needing to manually disconnect the antennas each time the unit is powered up, or each time the frequency is changed. This allows for much easier mobile and remote use scenarios. The addition of the fifth tuner also allows us to use a five element antenna array, which results in much improved direction finding accuracy and better multipath rejection. USB-C is also now used on both ports for greater port reliability, the PCB has been redesigned for lower noise, software controlled bias tees are present on each port, and it comes in a tough CNC milled enclosure that doubles as a heat sink.

I'm a newbie to this stuff, does the radio you're tracking having to be actively transmitting to direction find it?

I don't think that this system, as demonstrated, is quite achieving the theoretical maximum possible performance. Perhaps it's the cluttered environment. Might be worth debugging and fine tuning in a clear field (if you haven't already) to ensure that the messy directionality is purely a function of the complicated environment.

Very good job, but it is half of what one friend of mine needs. He suffers attacks very likely in the microwave spectrum. He can detect with an android app that he produces ultrasound waves with very weak signals in two frequencies 40371 Hz at -68 dB and 55624 Hz at -68 dB. He found sometimes and very weird additional signal at 23000 Hz exactly. That fact produces a buzzing sound or tinnitus in his ears that makes him awake. His hypothesis is that microwave sources that he should locate interact with human piezoelectric collagen to produce these ultrasound signals but doesnẗ know if there is any mathematical relationship between ultrasound generated and microwave sources. Also, he suspects that he could be the microwave source and there are two scalar wave beams that by interferometry produce a microwave source in his head. How can this be researched?
@TheBauwssss
@TheBauwssss Год назад
If it is really as you describe, then there is a very simple way to test this. He should try covering his head with something conductive, grounded metal works best. Such as sleeping with his head inside a metal box with preferably a copper grounding wire attached to the metal. Depending on frequency the grounding wire may not even be critical for the metal shielding to be successful in sufficiently attentuating the signal as to make it virtually unperceptable to him. And this is going to sound ridiculous, but even just wearing an ungrounded tin foil hat of sufficiently thick aluminum foil with sufficient coverage of his temples, ears, neck and underside of his chin should be able to do the trick, if not perceptibly reduce the discomfort of this signal, as long as it really is an electromagnetic signal (and not an acoustic signal for example) that is to blame for this.
@JxH
@JxH 9 месяцев назад
@@TheBauwssss Yep, thus the Tinfoil Hat meme. That said, it's a good approach to quickly and utterly disprove the assumed source. You don't need a "ground wire" at microwave; think about how many wavelengths a ground wire would be a microwave, useless. Aircraft can act as a Faraday Cage, and they don't need no stinking ground wire back to 'Earth'.
