Remah cemetery, Remah Jewish Cemetery in Krakow, Poland - the Old Jewish Cemetery (Remah Cemetery, or Remuh Cemetery) in Krakow (Cracow). Let's visit Krakow's oldest Jewish cemetery (Remah Cemetery, or Remuh Cemetery), one of Europe's oldest and most graphic in the beautiful city of Krakow.
The Remah Cemetery, or Remuh Cemetery, also known as the Old Jewish Cemetery of Kraków, in Kraków, Poland, is an inactive Jewish historic cemetery established in 1535. Remah Cemetery, or Remuh Cemetery is in the Renaissance Kazimierz district of the city beside the 16th-century Remah Synagogue, at 40 Szeroka Street. In 1800, Remah Cemetery, or Remuh Cemetery was closed and the nearby New Jewish Cemetery was built at 55 Miodowa Street. The cemetery gets its name from Rabbi Moses Isserles, whose name is abbreviated as Remah, who is buried there. Izaak Jakubowicz, donor of the Izaak Synagogue is buried there.

Very interesting and informative video. It is interesting to see how the cemetery wall was pieced together using the remnants of tombstones and graves that were damaged during WW II, and how badly the cemetery was destroyed during WW II. Many of the graves appear to have been built above the ground, and are now badly decomposing. Is anyone trying to repair the graves in this cemetery? I really would like to make a trip to Poland as I have grandparents and great grand parents who perished in Poland during the Holocaust, and were apparently buried in Poland, although not in Krakow to my knowledge. Unfortunately my late father who came from Poland, was the only relative that survived WW II and since he is now deceased, there is no-one left from his generation to ask. I am now physically handicapped and can barely walk anymore, so I highly doubt that I will be ever be able to travel to Poland. What I am amazed that in the old cemetery the graves and headstones still have stones placed on top of them indicating that people have recently gone to visit these graves, and left stones on the top of the headstones, as a sign of remembrance to those who were buried there. I personally find it had to believe that these stones would remain on the top of these headstones after all these years, especially after all the casualties that occurred during world war II. I am really looking forward to viewing your planned future video of the old synagogue of Krakow, and I also would like you to post a video of the new synagogue in Krakow as well !

+Michael Friedman People visit this place every day, thus the stones on top of the graves.. The remaining graves are maintained and this is why you see some of them covered, to preserve the carving (names, etc) on them.. If you ever go to Poland, Cracow is the best city to visit, it is an amazing place..

Vic : Prior to viewing this video, I watched your one on the newer, but still old other Jewish cemetery in Krakow. As my late father's mother's side lived in Krakow for generations, I presume I have distant relatives buried in both cemeteries.

Wow, that would be incredible. I bet there is a way to find out if this is indeed the case since the local Jewish groups have records of who was buried there..

Wonderful historic documentation. To think that many headstones were desecrated & used as road paving, from the new cemetery, to the Nazi labor camp at Plazsow depicted in Schindler's List 1993. It's a shame that Jewish organizations around the world don't creates specific funds to restore this 16th-19th Century cemetery & others remaining in Europe. It's quite remarkable that the Nazis didn't obliterate this older cemetery. Is the wall the headstones repatriated stones used as paving stones to create this monument. I like that there are stones on headstones by visitors. Baruch Hashem May the dearly departed remain at peace.
