If you think about it, it was done in a really roundabout way. Since the coin was originally Odin's, it was bestowed to Atreus, then to Kratos, then to Skjoldr, which he may use to help kickstart Denmark.

Fun fact: Skjöldr (aka Scyld) becomes the founder of the semi-mythological Scylding dynasty. His descendants continue to rule over Denmark for generations. One of those descendants, Hrothgar Halfdansson, was the Danish king whose mead hall was attacked by Grendel in Beowulf. Hrothgar may have actually been a real historical figure. The present-day city of Roskilde ("Ro's well"/"Ro's spring") in Denmark is named after him -- "Ro" being another name used to refer to Hrothgar in old Norse legend.

Skjöldr also married a goddess named Gefjon in the Ynglinga saga. In that saga, Gefjon was previously married to a Giant with whom she had several children before meeting Skjöldr and becoming queen-consort of Denmark. Perhaps the devs are supplanting Gefjon with Thrud in the GoW universe as the co-founder of the Scylding clan. Like Gefjon, Thrud is associated with the Giants, being a granddaughter of Fjörgyn and a friend of Atreus. Thrud is also a powerful/cunning badass in GoW like Gefjon was in the sagas. Gefjon even created the Danish isle of Zealand by physically cutting a whole chunk of land away from Sweden. I think the devs are combining Gefjon's character with Thrud's in God of War. Which is dope, because that makes Hrothgar a descendent of both Skjöldr and Thrud (and, by extension, Odin and Thor) in the GoW universe. Grendel is gonna get fucked up when he attacks the mead hall. 😂

funnier thing, Beowulf (the wolf of bees, aka a bear) was probably the original legend behind Bodvar Bjarki, the man whose battle rage was said to be either akin to a bear or to literally make him a bear (as if wearing their skin)... and that legend itself is most likely the one that became the norse myth Modi, son of thor, heir to Mjolnir and his father's bravery/anger and patron to the Berserkers, you know the raging norse warriors that'd wear bear skins and take tons of mushrooms as they believed they'd become as powerful to a bear

@@CornRecords972 in the defense of 4 we are only given certain areas in Midgard to explore those being the woods faye enchanted to keep others god or otherwise out and the lake of Nine realms I think if it really was in Midgard anyway we did technically see Mortals just not living ones we could interact with I think several ghosts Kratos and Atreus helped were mortals(humans) also I believe the Raiders are humans in both 4 and 5 with certain variants being otherwise discerned

I like how Kratos seems to respect Skioldr, even though he's yet to become a legendary king, he respects him for leading the organisation of migardians and asgardians and for being a friend of Atreus. Kratos being a man so free of judgment to others, I guess helps him see past Skioldr's awkwardness in conversation.

As a danish person, this is so fun and interesting. I really just loved playing both GOW games (2018 and 2022), knowing everything about the realms, mythology and characters. As well as seeing Santa Monica Studios’ own interpretation of the Nordic myths and saying: “hey, that’s not right”😅

They could have Atreus playing the role of a young Merlin...
