This is part two of the restoration of my Kriesler 'Beehive'. The case is badly scratched after a previous owner scraped off the factory paint. I also decide to make a new Kriesler badge for the front, that should be fun 🙄
My Beehive was first produced in 1946 and has become a collector's classic.

Fantastic work David! I can see the fascination with that design, it has the "high voltage insulator" look to it as well.

That's a beauty. I am completely awed by you patience with the Kriesler badge and I'm so glad it was rewarded - it ended up looking perfect. I was particularly pleased you put a textile cable on the radio as well - I remember visiting my Granny's as a child and all her old appliances and light fittings had textile cables and they really do evoke the era.

The reproduction Kreisler badge looks as though it is original ...it goes to show what can be achieved with determination and perseverance, and this radio looks, and performs first class. Hi Dave, Beautifully done again,as usual. Making the KRISLER badge was a great effort, and all your video's are full of GREAT IDEAS. And many thanks for getting me started. I have just restored a Hotpoint Y56DE [ AWA ]. My dad bought it in 1954/55, and as a kid I would listen radio serials, [Tarzan, Biggles etc.] It's bee sitting around my place for 25 years, since dad passed away. It is now fully restored & takes pride of place in my Ham Shack

What weird cabinet construction! Very helpful all these years later though, made it simpler to clean properly. Yes, that badge...took longer to figure out how to do it than to actually do it. As you said, next time you have to make something by this method, it'll be a lot more straightforward. You've learned a useful new skill and shared it with the rest of us so thanks for that. It came right in the end and looks an absolute treat! Overall cabinet finish came up very well indeed and you'd never guess it was originally painted. It really looks the absolute business! Great job on the restoration. Just to let you know that particular model came out of the factory painted cream with partial green knobs , green badge and green glass dial . It also came out of the factory painted green along with natural brown Bakelite finish. Cheers Paul
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 Год назад
Thank you Paul. Yes, this was one such model, the owner had removed the cream paint with a scraper damaging the case in the process 🙂

Tip: having successfully employed wet and dry on a number of plastic and Bakelite cases, I use water in a dish (not flowing) and put a drop or two of washing up detergent into the water. That acts as a very effective lubricant and helps avoid accidental gouging of the surface. As for polish, I use Autosol Metal Polish Liquid. I find the liquid to be just abrasive enough without being too so.

I dont know if you know any one with a 3D printer, but seems like scanning the badge into a CAD program you could replicate the badge and even change sizes at will. I love your tenacity on solving a problem!

As always, a brilliant demonstration of skilled craftsmanship, patience , determination and dedication. . My better half caught me watching your presentation, which usually means some discomfort and induced guilt heading my way at the speed of light, but joyfully, on this occasion, she was stopped in her tracks at the sight of the Beehive Radio.. She actually loves it, and would like to own it... Please feel highly complimented by her enthusiasm and my escape, (on this occasion), from a fearful retribution.. Keep well & safe Dave.. 🥴

Making that Kriesler badge was a lot of work and at least some added expense worth noting but the end result was the difference between a rough radio with a damaged badge and a great looking old radio that appears in perfect condition. Good work to say the least.
