I'm so glad to hear you excited over live-a-live as well. Literally brought me to tears, I've been waiting for it for years and it looks so incredibly gorgeous.
This was a great Direct for nostalgic classics' fans. Glad to see they didn't bury Front Mission franchise as a whole after the disaster that was Left Alive. Holy shit did I forget Klonoa even existed. Aaand I might've let out an inhuman screech when I recognized the saloon from Live A Live. SQEX, YOU MAD F*CKS. ABOUT TIME. THANK YOU!!
I really appreciate the fact that, if there's a game in the Direct that I don't recognise or remember, chances are Krimson KB will. That's why he's fast becoming a favourite of mine
For those who don't know, and that's _fair_ because it never was released outside of Japan, Live A Live has been described as "the best JRPG we never got". It is THE Holy Grail of JRPGs, and yes, more than Mother 3. Why? Let me break it down. Also DO NOT look up information on the actual plot of the game, you will spoil yourself at lightspeed and this is not a long game. First off, the director? Takashi Tokita. You probably know him better from the very next project he directed, Chrono Trigger. Live A Live was his directorial debut and the project that gave him the working-up energy for Chrono Trigger. The soundtrack? Yoko Shimomura. Yes, THAT Yoko Shimomura. This was her first project after joining Square from Capcom. It is legendary all on its own. As you may have heard at this point, one of the tracks -- Megalomania -- directly drove the creation of Toby Fox's Megalovania, because he loved Megalomania but couldn't finagle use of the actual track for the Earthbound hack where it all started. The gameplay? Radical. The trailer is telling you that there's multiple plots in multiple timelines, which is correct, but what it's not telling you is that each of those timelines has its own unique systems. Even though each one is only a few hours long, there's basically six or seven different RPGs in one, here. They all have their own style and they're all fantastic. Each timeline's style and main character was also designed by a different manga artist thanks to Squaresoft having a publishing deal with Shogakukan at the time that let them get away with something that nuts. The most famous is definitely Gosho Aoyama of Detective Conan fame, who designed the Twilight of Edo Japan section, but you might also recognize Ryoji Minagawa, co-creator of ARMS, Yumi Tamura, who created the long-runner Basara, or Kazuhiko Shimamoto, who has been working in the industry for approximately five hundred years and who has an appropriately long roll of honors. Live A Live is a HELL of a game and it's long been one of those "if you know, then you KNOW" games in RPG fan circles, where you could look at it and marvel at just how many branches grew off this tree that was considered a commercial flop at the time and never came out in the West. But now here it is, and you can play it, too.
FYI: LIVE A LIVE is a game from the Squaresoft era that was composed by Yoko Shimomura and directed by Takashi Tokita (FF IV, Chrono Trigger, Parasite Eve). It also has a musical theme that inspired Megalovania (Megalomania).
CC is one of the games of my life. I was crying yesterday rewatching the theme song and some covers. The Nostalgia is so intense. Big hug from Brazil to everyone.
I've been talking about this my whole life. It's my childhood and I've been listening to the ost and dreaming about a rerelease for soooo long. I've cried a lot
This was such a good direct, Mario strikers, Earthbound, Mario Kart DLC, Portal. Nintendo is gonna have a great year if this is just the first half of 2022.
Really excited about the Chrono Cross remaster and the Live A Live remake! It's clear that Square is going back through their old catalogue and bringing their old games to modern platforms. Hopefully that means it's only a matter of time before they get to VAGRANT STORY!! But I really hope they do a a remake of that instead of a simple remaster, because the game can be quite.. obtuse for new players. Gamers don't mind a good challenge, but there needs to be some better tutorialization and a better interface to make it a much more appealing modern game. I've seen many fans say that they would be up for reworking the combat into a more Souls-like ARPG, and I would 100% be okay with that. Also, bring on that rumoured FF Tactics remaster. Better yet -- they could market both FF Tactics and Vagrant Story as part of the Ivalice Alliance series. Fingers crossed!
This “Nintendo Direct” got the attention of alot of gamers in their late 30’s and 40’s that grew up with a bunch of these titles.. Most of whom have kids now.. we are gonna see alot of parents picking up the controller for the first time since the mid to late 90’s-early to mid 2000’s and its gonna be glorious to see them come back in to the fold.🤘🏼👍🏼
I feel like you and Ash from GVG are the only ones who reacted the way I did to Chrono Cross, Klonoa and Live A Live. That made me so happy. And yes- GIVE US CHRONO TRIGGER.
If there was one game that would get me to buy a Switch after I get my tax return, it’s the remake of LIVE A LIVE. I never got to play it, so it’s about damn time we all got to experience a true classic gem, a legendary stepping stone for SquareEnix. The directorial debut of Takashi Tokita, who would go on to work on Chrono Trigger and Parasite Eve, among others. The first ever Square OST done by Yoko Shimomura, who would go on to work on Super Mario RPG, Parasite Eve, and KINGDOM HEARTS. A legacy that is finally getting a rebirth, 28 years later.
I mean earthbound was released on the Wii U and snes classic and earthbound beginnings (mother 1) already released on the Wii U. Which I have all. So it’s not so much “finally giving us mother 1” as much as it is “easily having it available to everyone” since the Wii U obviously didn’t sell as well as they hoped. But I’m excited they decided to bring it to the online service, so that way everyone can play it.
not that there was much doubt at this point, but Chrono Cross Remastered is the final definitive proof for me that FF Tactics remastered and IX remake are in the oven and probably not too far away
I hope, but there's always a possibility that a project gets cancelled behind closed doors. I am not that much of a tactical RPG guy so I don't know if I would want to replay tactics, but a IX remake is right up my alley. Favorite game in the franchise for me. Really hope it happens.
What's so surprising about Earthbound Beginnings also being brought to NSO? It was on Wii U, they literally had no excuse not to bring it back alongside Earthbound. Now if they gave us Mother 3, THAT would be freak-out worthy.
Didn’t they put Mother 1 on the Wii U? I know they released “Earthbound Beginnings” in America some years ago. I saw some people predicting Xenoblade Chronicles 3, but I didn’t believe. Been chatting hype with multiple people ever since.
This direct was awesome! Tho im still disappointed bout the kingdom hearts games on switch being cloud version, as for the other announcements in the direct, they were great.
Ok this just my opion but seeing how there remaking dq 3 and livealive into the. The octopath travlier style it make the pixel remaster seem weak by comparing them but i do want a ff6 and 5 remake from this
